  • Here's a story about a car that nearly changed the automotive industry forever. A car that brought the Jet Age to people's driveways. A car that ran on anything from Perfume to Petrol, and Diesel to Tequila. A car whose demise was due to the world it was born into.
    Just to reiterate, Steve Lehto's book is a fantastic read and there really is so much more to this story that I couldn't fit in this video. So if you want to learn more (and by more I mean pretty much everything) about the Chrysler Turbine, do pick up a copy of the book.
    Thanks folks.

    At some point the algorithm will catch up with the brilliance of Grahams videos and they will gain the views that they deserve.

    I know first hand how difficult it is to make videos of this quality. I was hooked from start to finish. PLEASE make more if you can afford to, you also have such a unique USP, making your vids unlike the sea of crap RUclips is today. Hopefully we'll hear back from you !

    Great video! It's so sad, that so much efforts don't meet the number of viewers it deserves.

      Thanks Alex, it's kind of you to say, hopefully one day more people will see these videos, however in the meantime as long as those who do watch them find them enjoyable, that's enough for me.

    That's so crazy how such an impossibly seeming project can actually be realized and even more crazy that after so much was done, a simple change in emission regulations can completely end it's development. And imagine if the accident at the factory happened a few years later for example, this car would've been a truly legendary classic, everyone would've known about it even today. Who knows what developments could've been done in those years, they might've even changed the whole industry as we know it!
    Great story as always, don't know how I've missed it when it came out:D Cool how you've incorporated the whiteboard as a green screen, don't recall seeing that in your vids before. Also, funny thing, the characters in Japanese and Hindi signs at 12:04 are upside down:D

    Great video and fantastically well explained as always Graham! I think this officially is the first time I’ve ever felt sorry for a car company - poor Chrysler 😞 I love the Chanel no5 and peanut butter facts - that’s crazy cool isn’t it?!

      Thanks L J! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Me too, it's sad that one of the few times this large car company tries something genuinely innovative and courageous and it goes up in smoke essentially through no fault of their own. The fuels it ran on are super cool, it was hearing those facts that caused me to want to learn more about the car and make the video on it. Thanks for watching!

    Liked the video, but you were wrong in saying Elwood Engel designed the Chrysler Turbine. I was designed (mainly) by Charles Mashigan. Elwood was the man in charge that hired Chuck for this project. Chuck had worked with Elwood at Ford, before going to Chrysler. Chuck was working at Ford's Thunderbird Studio, as well as the Pre-Production Studio when he got a call from Elwood at home one evening. He wanted Chuck to come see him at Chrysler about a special job he wanted to hire Chuck for. Chuck went into Elwood's office and he explained he wanted to hire him for this special project and wanted to know if Chuck still had the renderings he had done on the 3rd generation Thunderbird. Chuck said yes I do still have them and agreed to work for him at Chrysler. That is why the Chrysler Turbine car looks so much like a Ford Thunderbird. Chuck left Chrysler to work for Dick Teague at American Motors and is credited with designing the AMX, Hornet Wagon and Eagle Wagon. Chuck was made head of all Jeep Design in 1971 and he designed the front of the Military HUMVEE, just before retiring. Chuck and I became dear friends during what was the last 10yrs. of his life. We ended our phone calls with I LOVE YOU and I along with his Daughter and Grandson covered him in his casket, that is how close we were. Everyone wants to give the man at the top of the design studios all the credit and it simply isn't so, or the wouldn't need design studios, they would be design offices! You have to remember the big three have hundreds of designers working at each car manufacturer. Best Always and in ALL WAYS, C. L. Zinn II author of the AMX Archives and Javelin Archives books

    It can still be possible. We have advanced in our technology. With a little bit of attention put into it, we can make it a reality, but there's a problem, electric cars, they are the future, but it can't stop the dream to be a reality. I bet we can combine the electric car and the turbine engine. We still have a chance to make another turbine powered car

    • @AveragetoPoor
      @AveragetoPoor  4 года назад

      It would be great to know whether the future has anything in-store for the automobile turbine engine. I think you're absolutely right regarding the electric car, they are the future and hold advantages over the turbine that would be difficult to nullify (gas-turbine engines are hugely expensive to produce due to the materials and precision needed to craft such a hot and fast spinning engine, whilst electric powertrains are getting cheaper and cheaper to produce). Interestingly there was a car demonstrated a few years ago that combined an electric motor and a gas turbine to charge it called the Techrules Ren, though I'm not sure if it's gotten any further in its development since then.
