    Well, vinyl has taken off mainly because of peoples longing for physical objects...
    It's as a counter reaction to everything becoming virtual and erosion of the concept of private property, because of all the subscription based payments.
    People like the tactile interaction... and especially now that so many people have lost their jobs due to lockdowns and stuff.
    When they weren't able to pay all those monthly fees, they discovered how little they actually own - worked for many years but in the end they've had nothing to show for.
    People who are into vinyl mainly for the sound quality are quite rare ever since the introduction of CDs.
    It's just that when you're in the world of HiFi, you're obviously come across like minded people.

    If DSD team remastered biggest musics creators of the time from 80s to 2020s ranging from rock, metal, jazz, bluez, all the way to electro music and then dumping it to the mass. I'm pretty sure DSD would grow in popularity globally.

      @vinylrules4838 2 года назад

      They tried this in the 90's and not enough people bought into it. Now some of those SACDs bring in big money. The current issue is one would need a DAC that could play back DSD from streaming. The average person is not going to pay for an expensive DAC.

    • @ThinkingBetter

      @@vinylrules4838 DSD support in a DAC is fairly trivial and done with DAC chips that cost a burger. The issue with DSD is that it just doesn't play in modern audio architectures at all except as a hack. You can't run DSD through a Windows, Android, Mac OS, iOS or Linux architecture with the audio mixing and other functionality in modern devices. It also doesn't go through wireless audio connections e.g. LDAC or anything else Bluetooth. And if you want to benefit from modern digital room corrective or active cross-over processing (DSP), the DSD data just don't compute. DSD sounds better than red book CD but used optimally, PCM can sound equally good or better with sufficient sample rate. 192kHz 24 bits PCM is superior to SACD/DSD and with current roadmap of technology, music can easily be mastered natively in 192kHz 24 bits (or 384kHz) so why bother with DSD? If there was some argument for DSD 20 years ago, there is less argument today with PCM able to run at much better sample rates easily. And PCM doesn't exclude sampling the music using sigma delta conversion to gain the benefits of what DSD is about.

    • @sermerlin1

      @@vinylrules4838 You don't need an expensive DAC. You have windows PC which can play DSD just like it can play PCM. I mean basically it's same shit just recorded differently and Windows can playback both of them.
      Anyone with a laptop or desktop could play it.
      You can also play DSD on an android phone. I'm pretty sure you could even stream DSD file if you wanted to.
      The problem in the 90s was that yes digital was expensive and especially for high quality digital playback you couldn't play it on your PC and there weren't smartphones so you needed a DAC which was expensive or a CD player.
      The only thing that needs to happen is they need to remaster some of the most famous albums from various artists and not just from "audiophile" sector of music but from all. Punk, rock, metal, electro, jazz, blues, pop, etc.
      If DSD is that much better then PCM, it could easily gain traction if they wanted to by increasing awareness that you CAN in fact play it anywhere now and you don't need 2000$ DAC to play DSD as well as by having artists broadcast their highest sold albums in DSD and I bet it would after some time become standard just like CD quality today is.

    This was so very appropriate and needed! The simple fact Sony loves using that "Hi-Res" sticker on their gear makes DSD relevant. If weve maganed to make it streamable, first person to create an app/service for it wins!

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter 2 года назад

      Streaming is already possible with lossless 192kHz 24 bits stream that can beat DSD-64 when used optimally. There is a huge problem with DSD and that is not about making it streamable but rather about making it processable without having to translate it into PCM. You just can't do math on a DSD stream like you can do with a PCM stream and that makes it unsuitable for modern devices running operating systems such as Android, Windows, iOS, Mac OS, Linux etc. The vast majority of today's streaming goes through these operating systems where the audio plumbing is PCM based allowing support of mixing multiple audio sources digitally. Technically, there is no future for DSD considering the world of digital devices relying on these operating systems other than in downloading files and playing them directly to a DAC that supports DSD. That market is

  • @portwill

    I have DSD files but I'm not much of a fan, couldn't really experience it properly. I never had a room where - with acoustic treatments in place - I didn't need some sort of digital correction (Trinnov, Dirac, etc.), none of which supports DSD. Not to mention I only had one interface (from RME) that supported DSD without any processing and now the only way for me to play it is to convert it to PCM. Still, technically speaking DSD is far superior and I only wish we had more options to manipulate it in the box and to even play it. I think the cheapest way currently to record is with Tascam, otherwise you need to pay a crap load of money to even manage DSD digitally which does not help the format spread either. So it's hard to record and manage DSD, it is hard to play it back, it's a very niche format.

    I would so like a PDM/ DSD DAW (for Windows and Mac) - would editing and processing be possible via DoP in the box while staying as close as possible to DSD resolution?

    I really wish the Sonoma system was still in production and advancing with modern technology. You can do so much more with Pyramix (the only game in town now) but I dont think it and the Merging ADCs are as good as Sonoma+Meitner, and Pyramix has a lot of Swiss quirks in operation. The recordings I've heard on Sonoma must be among the best audio quality ever recorded. Even those simple David Elias albums from 15 years back still whoop modern day PCM.

    Why the general population isn't interested is surely because the Recording industry have decided that the way forward is compression and loudness and zero dynamic range. What's the point of a fine wine if you can only get in a plastic cup from McDonald's.

  • @stimpy1226
    @stimpy1226 2 года назад

    It seems like Mark Levinson was ahead of the curve again when he attached himself to SACD in his Red Rose line of audio equipment. When I sat down in his audio salon for my first listen, I was staggered by what I was hearing but it doesn’t seem like many retailers and the audio industry were grabbing onto this ring while riding the merry-go-round. Paul, I hope that you are not correct about DSD’s future and that you will work with Gus to bring DSD to the general population of listeners. Seems like Gus has some ideas already. In any case, I wish you both the best of luck.
