- Guys, we are back after a few weeks of unplanned leave from the podcast! I have been so so tired and ill but we are so happy to be bringing you this episode with Molly Burke. It's so exciting we chat so much in this episode about dating as a blind woman as well as a few other things that are very close to my heart and Molly's too. Such a great conversation! 100% not over the top, the way Molly manages meeting someone in real life from a dating app. They’re rather ingenious strategies if you ask me.
I’m also very much the person who confuses a word in a phrase, location, book, movie, band, etc. You’re not alone Lucy! Hope you get your B12 back in a good range & feel better though.
Such an interesting conversation, covered a few topics I don't think people talk about with regard to blind and vision impaired women. Firstly, I have never tried dating or dating apps, I'm just not that person. The only people I have been with have been people I've met and become close to over time. As for guidedog at the wedding thing, there are so many little parts to it. If I knew there was not going to be a lot of space and that there was someone with allergies I probably wouldn't bring my dog, being an asthmatic myself and knowing how having an attack can effect me, I don't want to risk that happening to someone because I refuse to use a different mobility aide. Personally, I know my skills are such that I can leave her behind and use my cane, maps, Aira and other such tools to independantly access the wedding. Once again, lovely to listen to your chat.

Is it bad that I kind of understand where that bride is coming from? It’s meant to be her special day and from the sound of the small venue size, she’s gonna end up being either very ill from allergies or zonked out on medication! I wouldn’t want either of those for my wedding day. But yes, I’m sure she could’ve handled the situation a bit better with her friend and had a proper conversation rather than make the decision for her.
I think the problem is that she made all the decisions for her friend rather than having an open discussion about it.
My mum always says 'Nevermind the Midwife' instead of 'Call the Midwife' 🤣

I'm now imagining stereotypical 60s husbands rolling their sleeves up and saying, "Never mind the midwife, *I'm* going to bring *my* child into the world!".

@@TheWheelBry My grandad actually helped deliver my mum in the 60s (homebirth), because the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck and the young, inexperienced midwife panicked!
I just listened to the pod and I wanted to come here to say- vitamin B12 deficiency is very serious - some of the damage done can be and very well may be permanent. It’s important to supplement B12 when you are vegan and vegetarian. I’m only commenting here because of how lightly it was presented in the pod ❤
I am glad you put something about this. Vitamin b12 deficiency runs in my family and you can end up with permanent nerve damage not just brain fog and extremely exhaustion.

Hi lucy & ollie.
As a registered blind/deaf with some remaining sight and hearing aids: i find dating hard.
For me, i look visibly disabled. I find a lot of people on dating sites are more focused on looks than personality. I have been on dating sites since i was 18, plethora of times i have been told nasty thing likes " why are you here, you should crawl under a rock and die. People like you shouldn't be on dating sites". Or they would message me saying i should have this done or that done to "fix" me.
On the otherhand , i was fetishised by people who wanted hook ups with people who are disabled and transgender.
I'm 27 and been on 4 dates total through dating apps. I find that meeting people is better in person than through a screen. In person : what you see is what you get (if you know what i mean). They can't hide who they are like you can through a screen.
I always put in my bio that i have a disability but i always follow up with "but that doesn't define me" lol.
I am with molly. I always go to somewhere like a cafe where people know me so they can watch if anything happens or i will ask a friend or family member to come but go somewhere close so i can get help if anything bad happens. That sort of thing. I also keep my phone cbarged etc so i have some protection.
No 2 blind people are the same and shouldn't be put into a stereotype box. Other than the way i looke, a lot of people don't realise i'm blind/deaf till i mention it.
I have been refused a guide dog twice due to being more than just blind. Someone recommended applying for an assistance dog instead. I'm in the UK.

Hi guys, loving the podcast. I am currently using Bumble and Hinge as a person with RP. I use VoiceOver and on both apps any text is read out perfectly, including emojis. It’s pretty easy to navigate the page. They are very minimal descriptions of photos on Hinge but none on Bumble. My brother or cousin has to describe the photos to me. I think even if there was descriptions using AI, it couldn’t tell you enough detail or let’s be honest if someone is good-looking or your type. also, the chat interface on Bumble is easier to use than Hinge in my experience.🌈❤️

@@ashp5597 I'm not sure how well it works on a screen reader, but there should be three dots on the top-right of your comment - if you select that it will bring up a menu. The second menu item (of three) is the edit option - I'd hope your screen reader would read back the text you've written so you can find the right part to edit.
I'm not sure how you get the text-to-speech to behave though, perhaps try a different key word or maybe you can copy the right emoji from my comment?

I'm absolutely terrified of dogs, to the point of panic attacks but I would never forbid a service dog to be there. And also, to the dog owners that say "oh don't worry, they're nice" when I start panicking, I always want to answer "Well thank God". But for the bride, she was coming from a good place and handled it in the worst way.

I like to go to the local McDonald’s in my city as it is cheap, easy to eat, easy to order etc. Recently, two different males have been using their pet dogs as assistant dogs but they are clearly not. Issues included the dogs not complying to the law UK and not behaving like the law suggests. The managers had no issue on the law and thought any dog it applied to.
I never heard the word interabled. I have been in a relationship with a sighted man for 17 years.

That short clip of Molly and those guys just made me feel they were trying to humiliate her. So, people you can't visually humiliate a blind person. That made those guys look like fools. On the topic of the dog, get it washed and brushed just before the wedding. There is no issue.

Is a sever allergy a disability in itself? Just thinking?
Yes, but only if provable in British law if you're providing a service to a customer. For example, a taxi driver who refuses a blind or visually impaired guide dog user would be required to produce medical documentation of the allergy and carry evidence of this when making a refusal. They'd also be generally required to help in an alternative way (like calling the taxi company for another taxi to come).
Generally when considering a situation like this, you'd look to see what adjustments could be made to include all parties where possible. For example for a summer wedding, a reception could be partially outdoors, or you could ensure the dog was groomed shortly before attending to reduce dander and fluff.
On bumble: they just setout ADs that are slamming religious folks which isnt ok. They have since taken down the billboards.
