This is the new Thinkpad that I personally liked. It just looks modern also that new Haptic Trackpad, make it feel like MacBook or Surface Laptop 7 recently came out
Great review, Andrew! Love your videos from the room more than from the studio, they seem more cozy 😊 The camera and sound on this laptop are just amazing, realized this during your live unboxing! A well-built laptop with pretty nice specs, haptic touchpad, wow! I really don't care if it's a ThinkPad, considering how cool it is ❤️🔥
I think this is the laptop I’ve been waiting for. A “Windows MacBook”, with a much better screen and user serviceable storage to boot. Don’t love the design of the underside of the machine and I really would feel the missing USB-A port in my use, but that battery life would likely make up for both. Great review. You’re the only one I’ve seen even post a review of this machine!
@ I know this is a long shot, but would you consider coming back and commenting about the size when you get it? Judging by the dimensions online, it doesn’t seem very big at all. But I’m still leaning towards the 14” since I have my big monitor at home when needed.
The cursor keys are a big downside for me. One of the hallmarks of the "professional" models has been the fact that while the arrow keys were a little bit smaller, the up and down keys were still the same size as left and right. The squished up/down is always at least somewhat problematic if you're a software developer. Upside: Haptic touchpad by default. Finally.
Agreed with the arrow keys. Drives me crazy how all these companies are mindlessly copying Apple's terrible design choices like lemmings. The ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 is more of a true ThinkPad if you want the original keyboard layout and similar all-aluminum construction. That model can also be optioned out with a haptic touchpad as well. Although the current Gen 9 model does fall a little behind in performance with its Meteor Lake processor, the Gen 10 "Aura Edition" has already been announced and will release very soon.
On paper, everything seems good to great. However, the port design would bother me too much. A bit of an eye sore and not as smooth as the X1 Carbon Gen 13 or the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 5. If that doesn't personally bother someone, it is an excellent laptop.
Just a suggestion for the benchmark results, it would be nice to see the results for these Windows machines while plugged or unplugged from the power charger. Macs always have a leg up on the competition when it comes to this aspect and it will help those who are looking for a Windows laptop in their decision making process.
2 points better "Andrew Score" than the X1 Carbon and around 1K cheaper (at least) looks like a winner! One benefit over the Carbon is that ports on both sides for charging. Carbon only on the left. Small detail, but something that drives me crazy depending on the situation.
I love this laptop. I was going to buy this last week but held off because I wanted to see the reviews first. In the UK Lenovo seems to have increased prices this week so I'll have to wait until it's on sale again. Gutted! Fan noise is something I was most concerned about, so I'm really glad to see your review saying how good it was. Just checking, did the fan kick it at all during "normal use" like web browsing and Microsoft Office, or was it just when you were really pushing it for gaming and video editing etc..?
FWIW Andrew’s video said it was only detected below 30% brightness. So you may be ok most of the time. NotebookCheck also checks for this whenever they do their review as well.
If you remove the diehard fans that are upset there is no Trackpoint, and you have this in the office, most users will love it. The design screams Apple, yet runs Windows. Sorry, but the trackpoint is not selling devices, design and efficiency is.
Not all users will though. There are a substantial amount of users who rely on that Trackpoint who will probably just go with something else or won't upgrade. Me? I'm probably going to hope somebody makes one for Framework.
NPCs like you who buy cheap thinkpads are not the trackpoint's main target. It's engineering and surveying firms like the one I work for, we pay thousands of dollars for high end thinkpads with cad certifications and use the trackpoint a lot, especially when we're in the field.
Nice pc. Camera and mics are good. Speakers on this were good better than the x1. Display is very good. Overall an excellent choice for those who need a small efficient pc. One question I have is does the small 65 watt charger because of its small size get very hot more so than the larger 65 watt units after a while when the laptop is plugged in? Another great quality review.
Great review, the ThinkPad X9 looks good and is cheaper than the Carbon X1, however the Yoga Slim 7i Aura has essentially the same specs and weight (without the haptic touchpad) but with a larger 70Kwh battery and $500 cheaper?
This seemd like a big step in the right direction as far as build quality, camera and the trackpad goes. But how does one survive without an USB A?? I mean my mouse uses a USB A and micrphons and speakers in meeting rooms all use USB A. The lower key travel is a downer as well. Too bad. I had such high hopes for this device.
For older ThinkPad fans, it is a shit. But I think it is actually awesome if we view it as an ultrabook. No more trackpoint is not that important, it requires long time usage and training before we can say it is better than touchpad. I doubt how many Gen Z even know what trackpoint for when they receive their first laptop from the employer. Considering its humble price start from only $1239 in the USA, I guess it can be quite competitive, on par with Asus Zenbook UX34xx, (Actual price can be as low as 800USD is quite impressive) pessimistic about its sales in Asia. anyway, thanks for your so early review. AWESOME Job, give us some impression about it.
Thanks for the awesome review! Regarding the 15-inch haptic touchpad, are you sure it’s not made by Sensel? Could you share the source? I just ordered the 15-inch X9, but now I’m reconsidering the 14-inch version since it has a glass bezel.
Sensel has an official Reddit account and they say explicitly there that they only have it on the 14” and not the 15”. The 15” is still haptic I think, just from another brand and not Sensel.
The only thing I'm not crazy about is the fact that there are no usb-a ports on the ThinkPad X9 (2025) but everything else is great! The 2.8K OLED display, over 500 nits of brightness, the very crisp webcam and internal mics, the battery life as well as the superb audio quality of the internal speakers gives this a definite buy for me and highly recommended!! Thank you Andrew for such a Wonderful review of the ThinkPad X9 (2025)! 👏😁
Actually it looks really nice and as time goes on Lenovo should have sales. I have a TP Nano but am not a hardcore TP user. I think as trackpads in general have gotten better I'd rather have the larger track pad vs. the trackpoint and clicky buttons. I don't hate the trackpoint, but I seldom use it. For docs and spreadsheets I prefer a mouse.
bit divided on how the IO panels look. Kind of looks like a cheap cover over the ports rather than a nice metal finish, at least in the pictures and video shown here. Does it look better in person?
Hi Andrew. My Sony vaio has just died 14 years later, so I am looking for laptops to get a new one. Between the x9-15 gen 1 and the x1 carbon gen 13 aura edition which one would you recommend, please? Would you recommend any other better? Thank you so much
The fact that the haptic trackpad is different on the 15-inch version really bothers me. Maybe I'll just get the X1 Carbon G13. If I'm in Europe and want a maxed out X1 Carbon, is there any benefit to waiting for the custom versions or can I directly go for the most expensive of the two available ones ?
I just want to be clear. I had only limited time with the 15-in version at CES and I did not notice anything to be concered about with the trackpad on that unit. That being said, I have had extensive time with the 14-in and its Sensel Haptic Touchpad and it is really good. I hope to get a 15-in in for review.
Its not just that. The ThinkPad design, the trackpoint, the buttons, the repairability, the great keyboard, and the great port selection were all removed.
Yes this looks like a winner. But I am concerned with the engine hub, as they call it. Is it just for design or it has efficiency reasons? Looks like those tiny holes on the bottom might be vulnerable to wet surfaces? And is that where the sound comes out? What if its covered up? Ok so it looks the M4 and the X Elite chips are way ahead on bench scores. But I guess real life usage is a different thing?
I show the internals at 03:22 in the video and you will see that the speakers are nicely sized, and are bottom facing. It looks like the Engine Hub does help with the cooling of the system as the fans are located under it. I think they decided to go with the Engine Hub in order to make the laptop thinner overall. I like the design. Real world usage you will not notice a difference in performance over the other chips.
@ yes I like the mechanical design too. Yeah the sound was really good and the camera was probably the best I have seen yet. I am doing a lot of fiction writing these days and I know Lenovo seem to deliver strong with the keyboards. I have only tried some Yoga laptops in the store to compare with. So I hope something close to that. Thank you for the reply and great reviews as always.
Did you get any hands-on experience with the 15 inch version? I was interested in the 15 inch but I haven't heard or seen anything about it since the 14 inch is the version that most people seem to have.
@amadeus2638 I have one in hand and would be happy to answer any questions you may have, though I should mention that I have been a bit busy since receiving it and haven't been able to test drive it extensively yet.
Do you know if it will come with 5G as an option? I'm still waiting for the new X1 Carbon to be available with 5G, but this looks like an adequate alternative, especially if you want a larger screen without too much additional weight.

@andrewmarcdavid I really appreciate the honest and unbiased review. This laptop already has such a bad rap even though it's a true MacBook competitor with Windows.
As always loved you so ur videos. Lenovo makes preety good laptops. But here in India after service sales are not that great plus there is always a question of reliability. As a student planning to buy samsung laptop for a year but shortage of money maybe this at the end of this year I will save enough money to buy one in discount or sale. Hey Andrew in your last live stream you talk about giveaway tell me the procedure maybe I got luck (not always). 🙏🙏🙏
They could have called it a ThinkBook Pro perhaps. As for price, I actually think this is a good price. It is comes in much cheaper than the X1 Carbon Gen 13. It is also priced competitively when compared to some of the consumers laptops as well.
What exactly are you asking? The lunar lake version is better battery wise than the meteorlake version. Unless there was an error at thet ime of your writing that he's since corrected.
Sorry Andrew, this is not a ThinkPad , it is either an IdeaPad or a ThibkBook. Anyways, congratulations on your great job. I really appreciate your exquisite reviews
@@andrewmarcdavid Excellent. Really hard decision between the X9, X1, and Asus S14... any other Lunar Lake laptops you're excited for coming out next few weeks that may rival these options? Surface Book 7, LG Gram, etc? When can we expect the next Lenovo sale to be for X9?
The ThinkPad range has been sliding backwards for a few years now. Now it just took a MASSIVE step backwards. There are so many things Lenovo took away this model and I don't like this direction.
Can you please tell us what power mode and brightness you use when doing your battery tests.... 100% brightness on full power mode is going to have very different results compared to battery saver mode and 50% brightness. Your charts are meaningless without this information.
There are some key differences. First, the X9 has a better display. Second, with Lunar Lake you will not run into any compatibility issues with x86 apps as you may encounter with ARM. Third, the X9 is geared towards businesses and freelances and the like, whereas the Surface Laptop 7 is consumer based (although Microsoft just announced Lunar Lake based business versions).
Sorry , but lenovo is going the wrong way. The lack of a nipple excludes it as a thinkpad. And then there's the notch. At this point, this laptop is no longer distinguishing itself in the market with anything. It becomes one of many laptops.
Dumping TrackPoint - For me - Is a step forward. Seems like a pretty nice machine... Unfortunately - For me perhaps - I really need a laptop that's more capable and having a lot more RAM - 64 or 96GB.
Decent Ultrabook? I guess. TinkPad? Hell no! Lenovo has been corrupting and diluting the ThinkPad's strengths and identity since they took it over. I seems to annoy them that ThinkPad users and Apple Mac users have different preferences and priorities. And this is their worst outrage yet.
its a thinkbook. the problem here is in the branding. it would be great as a thinkbook, but horrible as a thinkpad because it is uncharacteristic of the thinkpad brand and philosophy.
At this point, just get a macbook. One of Lenovo's main focuses right now is "integrating" an ecosystem like Apple's. Millenials, and Gen Z are the new main workforce, and smartphones are ESSENTIAL for those gens. Got Gen Z workers that will most likely have an iPhone? Just get macbooks air for them.
@@headcrab4090 is more than that, if you see the first video of Andrew you will have more detail but for to resume: MAINLY the niple, the outside is metal and the high end X series always was kind of Carbon, don't have alloy magnesium inside body, the position of ports is more Yoga that thin X series. Maybe we exaggerates, yes can be... but if you are more familiar with others line of Lenovo this is more an ThinkBook or a Yoga... I am user of Thinkpad X series since X41 Tablet in 2005 when spill-resistant keyboard was a must!, so believe me I know the line of this laptops...
I've been waiting 1.5 years for all these CPUs to come out before buying. I think I've found something that hits everything: Yoga 7i 2-in-1, 360°convertible Copilot+ PC 16 inch model with 32GB ram. Core ultra 7 lunar lake v model. Any chance you'll be reviewing this? It's even got a tandem OLED based on the peak brightness and has thunderbolt 4 on both sides unlike ASUS's silly implementation.

@@andrewmarcdavid ok thanks, fair enough.both look great.
Sorry , but lenovo is going the wrong way. The lack of a nipple excludes it as a thinkpad. And then there's the notch. At this point, this laptop is no longer distinguishing itself in the market with anything. It becomes one of many laptops.
Why have Touchscreen if you can’t fold to tablet mode. That makes no sense.
Dumping TrackPoint - For me - Is a step forward. Seems like a pretty nice machine... Unfortunately - For me perhaps - I really need a laptop that's more capable and having a lot more RAM - 64 or 96GB.
looks interesting from the top, but the moment you change the angle or look inside it's not a thinkpad anymore... sorry lenovo,.
RAM is soldered on. No spare slot.
It's actually integrated into the SoC with Lunar Lake. Still not user serviceable.
@@andrewmarcdavidThat won't be the case with Panther Lake, as Lunar Lake's on package memory won't be repeated.
So much better without the trackpoint. Love the larger trackpad. Should be an option on all ThinkPads as the trackpoint is so yesterday.
No trackpoint, not a thinkpad
Not a ThinkPad design, not a lot of ports, not a lot of repairability, not a great keyboard, and of course, no trackpoint. Yeah, not a ThinkPad.
its a thinkbook. the problem here is in the branding. it would be great as a thinkbook, but horrible as a thinkpad because it is uncharacteristic of the thinkpad brand and philosophy.
Office is crap on Macbook, so not an option in business.
nope... nope, nope... a Thinkpad is a Thinkpad, sorry Andrew...
he is right and you know it as well
@@itsmilan4069 😄
If it is 99% Thinkpad but lack the nipple it is not a Thinkpad?
@ I yield.
I've been waiting 1.5 years for all these CPUs to come out before buying. I think I've found something that hits everything:
Yoga 7i 2-in-1, 360°convertible Copilot+ PC 16 inch model with 32GB ram. Core ultra 7 lunar lake v model.
Any chance you'll be reviewing this? It's even got a tandem OLED based on the peak brightness and has thunderbolt 4 on both sides unlike ASUS's silly implementation.
I hope to be getting one to review.
@@andrewmarcdavid Nice will keep a watch out of my subs page.
@@andrewmarcdavid Before I forget one thing I'd be interested in is the fact that it uses a m.2 2242 ssd but could it fit a 2280 ssd where there are more options, I don't want to buy and realise it can't.
Thanks in advance.
unsubbed for promoting garbage
