What it Takes To Power The Largest Cruise Ship in The World

- There are a few man-made things on the Earth that are as massive as the beautiful behemoth that is the Icon of The Seas. With a tonnage of 250,800 GT and, a length of 1198 ft [365m], this giant vessel easily outclasses every other cruise ship that has ever cruised the seas and takes the spot of the Largest Cruise Ship In the World. For reference, it’s said to be five times larger than the Titanic itself.
The sheer enormity of the Icon of The Seas allowed its constructors to create the largest waterpark on a ship ever, with 7 different pools and six waterslides, and, most impressively, whirlpools, for the first time on a ship ever!
Plus, if you’d like an adventure at sea with children, you’ll also have a special neighborhood that’s specifically made for children and parents in mind!
Not to mention the fact thanks to its extreme passenger capacity, made possible by the cabins and suites which are spanned across 20 Decks allow for an incredible capacity of around 10000 people!
You’re probably assuming that something as colossal as the Icon of The Seas requires tremendous power, and you’d be right in your assumption. To properly accommodate all of its occupants, all while granting the ship enough might maintain its cruise speed of 22 knots, the Icon of The Seas has to produce an astonishing 67,500 KW of power, which is why one must ask themselves:
How Does a Ship of This Size Get Its Power? Well, let’s find out! - Наука

Why not just make it nuclear powered and call it a night 🤔
That involves a rational conversation about nuclear power.... Also some changes to ITAR.
You can’t make it nuclear powered. I will sum it up for you in one word “environmentalists”.
@@jakekisiel7399 *gasp* what you mean we have a better alternative to batteries that would release toxic and corrosive gas's should they burn in addition to realistically a hole in the ship long before the fire could hope to be put out?
@@andrewyork3869 what are you ranting about? I’m not sure I follow you.
They could just use hydrogen if the cruise ship had a fuel cell. The only bi-product is water. Perfect for the ocean.
Honestly, Royal Caribbean is absolutely blowing it out of the park with their vessels, and the Icon of The Seas is definitely intriguing. However, I gotta say, the water park is a little bit too much for my taste 😂
Yeah I don't need all the bells and whistles if I go on a cruise, plus I don't wanna deal with a bunch of spoiled rotten brats running around all hours of the night.
Large cruise ships are destroying the visitor experience at many ports.
@@ljacobs357i could see that. 10,000 people is a lot of people to be getting off the ship at once. The ship would prob be ready to leave by the time everyone gets off
So incredibly ugly. These new ships suck. Floating buildings.
Icon is incredible but it is also slightly too Carnivalesque for my tastes.
Personally I believe that the Freedom class and Quantum class are the pinnacle of Royal Caribbean's ship designs. That said, I will certainly sail on the Icon of the Seas at some point.
As one of the engineers who designed the 46TS-DF's automation systems, this is amazing to see!
I’m getting strong AI script writing vibes from this.
yeah, and AI generated voice as well. ugh.
It's funny how some people condemn this ship or the experience when they've never even cruised in their life.
Loved to see it in person on sea trial a few days ago
What a Hellish experience
Not really, there should be airconditioning inside.
I have a 23ft Hemp Fibreglass composite, Mongolian canoe. When the weather starts getting rough, and my tiny ship gets tossed, if it wasn’t for courage of the fearless crew, me, the canoe would be lost.
The canoe would be lost.
Excellent. I want one!
But your professor can make a radio out of a coconut, but not fix a hole in your boat to get off the island! Lol!

This all seems very cool and yet it feels like a vacation nightmare!
Wow! Thank you!
0:43 the first ship ever with whirlpools😂😂 I would doubt that😉
Thank you for mentioning this. I heard that, replayed it about 10x to make sure I heard correctly then started scouring the comments. Good pick.
@@darebear2001bc this whole video is just a ad lol
Ive been wanting to go 😮 ever since this ship it was announced I been begging my parents to go but I need to see how it’s maiden voyage goes
This is Awesome! A maritime vessel running multiple sources power that significantly reduce waste and carbon footprint. These guys are racing for the Blue Ribbon on Environmental stewardship. I hope other vessels and ship owners take up the Challenge! They have a great start!
It still burns fuel, whichever type, at prodigious rates.
Hmm, I agree.... But to be fair the power plants they are using is not experimental but proven marine technology at scale. Ammonia based and Hydrogen based electric generators for such a ship would be ideal but they do not exist yet much less a reliable supply such fuels in the quantities needed. The ship will be carrying at least 8000 people at any given time. So the tech must work right the first time, every time. @@davidwallace-yc8or
So incredibly ugly. Floating buildings built on a barge.
It is fueled by LNG. Still very much a fossil fuel. Just much cleaner than the typical bunker fuel.
Made in finland 🇫🇮
I would call it made in Germany, since it's built by a German ship builder? Their dock in Papenburg is maybe too small for this.
This was build in Turku.
Just what I want to do on vacation is to be stuck on a ship with 10,000 other people 😢
😂😂😂🎉
I went on the harmony of the seas which has around the same person to size ratio and the only problem I noticed was the pools always being crowded. Although with the new amount of pools on this ship I don’t think that will be a problem.
@@sian1_1and shows booked quick.
You make no sense. It's not the number of people but the average space per person.
@@conveyor2 Correct. But Royal Caribbean has problems allowing for enough space in their common areas such as elevators and such. We sailed on the Allure Of The Seas in 2016, waited forever for the elevators and had to fight tooth and nail for a table in the Windjammer main buffet restaurant. And as mentioned above the pools were always crowded as well.
I hate cruising with children.
Just saying. Wärtsilä pronaunsiation is littlebit off. Close but littlebit off. should say it like Waertsilae
The bright colors make it look like a 5 year old painted the boat.
22 knots is 22 knots; NOT 22 knots per hour as you say. 22 knots is 22 nautical miles per hour. Actually, I don't think you have much knowledge of ships in general. So much wrong with your narration.
Daddy chill
Perhaps he still believes that the earth is flat. LOL
Insane!!
WOW 😲 This is amazing 🙌😁I love see the extreme level of efficiency, green technology, and sustainability in powering the Icon of the Seas. I am an advocate for sustainability and conservation. And I'm very passionate and feel very good when I see these changes that we can all do together at a faster pace with more planning and serious changes♻️. With all the technology and fuel efficient engines that separates the ship from all others is just impressive and I love it. Can't wait to board this ship one day. It's truly a ship that I see respecting the climate and green environment 💯👌🙌🥰

This ship reminds me of a person with a giant forehead. Also known as a 5 head lol.
Symphony of the seas wasn't introduced all that long ago. Then Wonder of the Seas just recently, now this ship? I guess Royal Caribbean just doesn't know the limits of their greed.
Yep Icon launches in January 2024, Utopia in July, and then are building a sister ship for Icon called "Star of the Seas." o.o
They scrapped several during covid....
What greed? Do you mean meeting demand?

Wärtsilä, not wartsila. The ä vovel is the same as in batman.
do any cruise lines allow passengers to tour the engine room?
I'm sure theyll have some sort of program. Most have a bridge tour and dine with the captain package. It is pricey though.
Whenever I travel on a ship or ferry, I always head for the engine rooms. Being a chartered design engineer, they almost always make me very welcome. On most major ships, the engineers take great pride in their work and like other people to see the results. They also like a fresh pair of eyes to help them resolving any problems.
I understand that the builders of this new massive ship have stated that they made it truly unsinkable.
We all know it has been said before
Wow 😊❤🎉
There is some VLCC super tanker bigger than Icon of the sea and they have only one big engine
Oasis of the seas had a whirlpool in the kids area before the refurbishment
I read the ship design
It just same of a flower horn fish because of the head
02:11 is not correct. the empire state building is 449 meters with the antenna. 381 meters is without
Imagine how much poop is on the ship at all times. 10,000 people is a lot of waste
Probably convert that shit into energy. Say like recycling..I don't know what you call that kind of energy but I guess it can come in handy.
144,000 gallons a day.. just insane...
That boat has a capacity of 7600 people..aircraft carrier only hold around 4500-5000 ..
Too many errors in the description of how the power systems work.

Wall-e. It’s happening.
I'll pass.
It's hardly being on vacation, being stuffed with around 10, 000 people. Not for me.
A million gallons of LNG should be sufficient to run the ship for 10 days or so.
Yep. And there will be no such thing as restoring an antique classic.
Finnish i am broud of our engineering skils.
Sounds like a nightmare to me. Surrounded by thousands of people doesn't sound fun at all... still it's impressive technology.
I believe Royal Caribbean is doing what most ships now are doing and are using Liquid Natural Gas.
I HAVE AN IDEA THAT COULD POWER THIS VESSEL WITH 1/2 THE CURRENT POWER AND INCREASE SPEED BY 50%, JUST A THEORY!
She will be powered by natural gas like all new cruise ships are
OH , so it's bigger than an aircraft carrier , then why not put a runway on top ?
5:01
Realy I like this powerful biggest ships
THANKS BUT NO THANKS IM SAFER ON LAND PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the carbon emission must be huge
So how many miles per gallon is that?
22knots/hr. Means roughly 25mph. At 1,000 gallons per hour you're burning at about 40 gallons every mile or 0.025mpg.
And the reason the planet is being destroyed is because not enough of us are driving electric cars.
@@brianlittle717 LOL. Are you being sarcastic?
Of course! Lol. But there is an element of truth to it! Like if electric cars really are the answer to save our planet then why don’t they make battery powered airplanes and rockets? Carbon pollution is bad when I drive my car, but it’s ok for big companies and big government to do it on large scale.
Don't you mean gallons per mile,? LOL
A floating barge, only size makes her seaworthy.
Pretty misleading talk about the fuel cells and batteries. I suppose, the ship won't work a decent time on battery power alone. And what's the power output of the fuel cell system?
1% of the diesel generators? 10%?
However, they seem to have made some effort to reduce the environmental impact of this ship.
Of course, nobody really NEEDS cruise ships, as well as nobody really NEEDS vacation at remote destinations (flights for vacation).
But it could be much worse.
Then it goes to Pakistan in a few years to be broken down
Its the tackiest eyesore on both land and sea
I would wanna travel on Titanic with period correct amenities any day over this thing. It’s not luxurious is tacky and cheap looking.
The technology is extremely cool. But there's no way in hell I'm getting on a ship with 10,000 other people.
Sounds like a nightmare, not a vacation
@@kaylamanorlol if it's a nightmare, you think people would sail on her? It's funny how people whine without even trying.
Almost a quarter mile long lol
The speed is expressed in KNOTS, not knots per hour. Get your terminology right!
thats to much fuel! why not look for another fuel choice?
Its not 10,000 people. 2,350 crew. 5,610 guest. The ship is so big and split into 5 neighborhoods over crowding really wont be an issue. I also don’t understand that concern. What vacation are you guys taking where you dont have to deal with crowds? Lines? Or people? Amusement parks are also crowded. Resorts are also crowded. Unless of course you’re going to something super private and high end.
5,610 + 2350 crew is what their site says. With a total of 10,000 people.
I never go on a vacation where there are large crowds. Its waste of time and simply annoying.
@@idontwantacallsign “unless of course you’re going to something super private or high end”….congratulations do you want a cookie?
@@MasterSumai ok so add 5610 and 2350. If you’re getting 10,000 try again
@@theambitiousalpaca4956 I know I said "With a Capacity of 10,000". Meaning....the capability of handling 10,000 passengers. Which I believe means MAX CAPACITY.
22 knots per hour? Yeah, right.
At the tests, it went 26 knots. So 22 knots will be normal cruise speed.
Too many people and kids not looked after properly no thankyou
Ha I can see it now, parents dumping their kids in the kid club areas and ignoring them the entire cruise...smh.
It's not 5x time larger then titanic stop spreading misinformation this ship is only about 2.5timee larger then rms titanic
it's 5x the displacement (in gross tonnage) which is the normal measure of the "size" of a large ship
One day we will get nuclear powered cruisers. You'll see
Nuclear?
No way would I ever want to go on that ship prefer the simple nice ships like celebrity eclipse and going on Holland America Rotterdam this Nov
Kudos to the engineers and their efforts to make things better. Gotta ask ourselves - if we are serious about reducing fossil fuel usage and co2 emissions - do we really need any of these ships.
A nuclear reactor would power it for 50 years.
They can't power civilian ships with nuclear fuel, can they?
It needs a few hydrogen engines with desalination.
But how do they produce the hydrogen. Unlike LPG, it does not liquify when compressed.
Ship, not boat
Youde have to have mental problems to want to go on a cruise with 10,000 people lol
Hey let's just get the Truth out. Heavy smoke with carbon emissions doesn't do anything to our environment. In fact the environment needs it and our "carbon footprints" to produce oxygen. So, the exact opposite of what they tell us is true... carry on.
Glad someone is using critical thinking
greenhouse effect, might not effect you in your lifetime but it will affect your children.

Buyer Beware!! I have a cruise booked on RCL which is over 500 days away. I booked, non-refundable, for $900. I just tried to cancel the cruise, because of immigration issues which were not foreseeable and out of my control. RCL refuses to even give me a partial refund
Well, you have plenty of time to change citizenship. See, wasn't that easy? You're welcome.
You knew it was non refundable going in right?
I don’t understand what the immigration problem has to do with you going on a cruise
@@MayorMcheese12 you have to have a visa for every port of call. Now many Caribbean nations don’t require one. But other countries do.
@@RedneckandPinayMost countries for cruises are no problem and many waive the requirement (as with most carribbean cruises) for Port of Call stops because it is made the expectation you will not be there longer than 24 hours. However if your ship ends its cruise at a port outside of your departing country then yes, you will need a visa.
The world is a crazy place these days. 10,000 people in one tiny spot on the ocean might make a very likely target for some demented terrorist group. Very worrisome.
Stop living in irrational fear. The World isn't so scary.
Cruise ships have been going for how long now? You do realize that have ships that have been in service for years near this size and capacity. The numbers are also closer to 8,000 total not 10,000.
