    There are inexpensive drill guides which are fast and reasonably accurate. I bought a Milescraft and as cheap as it was it got me through my project.

    You nailed it when you mentioned, wanting something so perfect that you do nothing at all . That was a huge hurdle for me . Keep up the great work . 👍

      It's such a hazard! And does seem to come with the personality of folks who are drawn to this type of work. You have to be picky enough to care about doing really fine work but not quite so picky that nothing is ever good enough to be finished.

      Made 'em myself :) I remain unashamed of blowing out the armpits from flexing my muscles... but will plan better next time around

    Nice work, after experience - is it a good vise?

    • @KatFinckWoodworking
      @KatFinckWoodworking  2 года назад

      The most important question ;)
      Yes, I find it to be a good vise and I really enjoy the quick release as I do work with many different sizes of material so not having to wind the handle forever is convenient. I'm finding it pretty stable and strong so I give it a thumbs up so far.

    Just curious where did you find the 8qtr beech? Would love quatersawn beech for hand plane material, and how do you like the veritas vises, they are a significant investment!

      I had some of this beech left over from a case piece that I made a year ago... such nice material that I've held onto these scraps even through a pretty big move from Maine in the USA to Nova Scotia. I imagine that if you keep an eye out many yards would have decent beech coming through since it's a domestic wood. If you don't have luck there, maybe keep an eye out for local folks hobby-milling stuff from wind falls. I actually had half of a very beautiful old beech come down in our yard in a windstorm last month. Of course you'll have a decent wait for that sort of thing to dry out enough for use but might be worth starting a little collection if you have the space for it.

      As to the Veritas vices... so far I think they're pretty great! I like the quick release which is a feature I haven't had in the past. Nice to be able to skip the eternal cranking if you've got a long way to go and also nice for getting a piece clamped in quickly without having to hold it awkwardly or testing it repeatedly for fit. I think there are certainly less expensive vices on the market and if you have time to watch Kijiji/ Craigslist/ marketplace/ etc you can find a much better deal but I was interested in moving forward with my projects and wanted to have something in hand that I knew would work for me. Plus, having all of the other material for my bench come to me for free (inherited from materials left sitting in a barn for years since my Dad died) I was ahead of the curve for investment and way ahead for sentimental value :)

      I was looking for quartersawn beech and had to have it specially milled by a local guy. I've got it almost dry now after a year in my basement with the dehumidifier on

      @@matthewharry2803 I LOVE this. It seems like a fools errand sometimes but it also adds another layer to the story of the piece that you make out of it. And the story is a huge part of the point of all of this.

      An entirely fair comment and I can't say I have a great excuse.
