This song is flawless.
This album is criminally underrated.
We take Metallica for granted.
Yup, you just don't know what you've got until it's gone.
@@MorbidCrow666 well said
It's a hard rock/alternative album by a band that branded itself a metal band for their whole career.

I don't care what anyone says, this song is a masterpiece. There's so much raw emotion in it.
This whole album is one of the greatest ever!
One of my favorites!
Yes, I agree. Its an amazing song. I think there are a few songs on Load and Re-Load that are gems. Very cool video too. Tool vibes with some grunge influence but still solidly Metallica. I dont think Metallica sold out. I think times just changed and they grew up. In fact, I wish people would have just allowed them to evolve. it seems like theyve spent the back half of their careers trying to "return to their roots" and there music has felt very uninspired since the Load era. if fans would have just allowed them to change and grow, I think we would have gotten much better music, long term.
Fair enough, since most people don't care about what you say.
it's the perfect workout song for heartbreak. "tear me open, make u gone"
This piece resonates big time.
Anger. Hatred. Demons. Self destruction.
This song is a very indepth psychological statement of truth.
I remember reading somewhere that its a song about cancer and what it does to people. But I agree with you that it can be interpreted as meaning so many other things.
I've read this and I kind of felt it like that. It's about his alcohol addiction and what it does to him and everything around him. I think he is sober for quite some time, like at least 7-10 years. And it's his wife that saved him.
But, yeah. Just googled it now. It's about his mom's cancer and the aftermath.
Very powerful song about James' mother's battle with cancer and her refusal to take the treatment due to her fundamentalist beliefs. You can hear James' sadness and frustration combined in this song. The video shows his blame of religion for his mother's death
Many Metallica songs remind me of my past battles, I've suffered from dysthymic depression from 18 to 29.
when you’ve been thru some shit you can appreciate this masterpiece even more. every lyric is so powerful
I've been through 18 years of shit so this song is powerful to me
Such a wicked fucking tune. The lyrics are so real. I’m sure many of us fight the battles this song speaks to
Cualquier semejanza con la realidad es mera coincidencia (saludos desde bs as.)
People are so afraid of change, this era Metallica has some phenomenal shit.
The truth is that they created many ways to play metal, they opened doors and took metal in another level...
I was 15 when the Load album was released. This was the first Metallica album I bought and I LOVED it. Imagine how blown away I was when I discovered the masterpiece album known as Master of Puppets. I’ve been a huge Metallica fan ever since. 24 years going strong
I was 20 and a friend of mine gave me Kill Em All. First time I didnt understand what was happening, I thought that it was recorded at another tape speed. 😄
Than I decided that I dont like this kind of music.
29 years after... I cant have a good day if I dont listen to Metallica. 🤪

I run but it stays right my side
So tear me open, pour me out
There's things inside that scream and shout
And the pain still hates me
So hold me, until it sleeps
Just like the curse, just like the stray
You feed it once and now it stays, now it stays
So tear me open but beware
There's things inside without a care

This album is actually crazily underrated and this song is a masterpiece.
It's a great album however I would rank this song as one of the worst on the album... it's very simplistic and highly radio friendly. Bleeding Me is more of a masterpiece.
Glitch Happy Gaming ❤️❤️
The House That Jack Built is the total dark horse of the album for me. Wish they would play it live.
@@houseovragnar1528 I don't think they will ever play that song live. A lot of the song is digitally edited together so playing it live would be extremely difficult, some parts are literally impossible to play live because you would need 4+ guitars, and they would need a talk box and other special equipment. It would be a huge pain in the ass for them to play it now.

I can't get bored of this song, just perfect. Masterpiece
Some people say that this is their worst era, but I actually like this style of Metallica a lot. The edgy make up and alternative metal esque sound has to be my favorite style of Metallica. It seems to have its own niche
It's always been a good record, it's just not a good Metallica record who at the time had branded themselves as a heavy/thrash metal band where at this record and reload were much more hard/alternative rock
This album is more like Southern rock
I loved Metallica since age 8 and I was 13 when this came out I carried this album in my baptist school and sketched James Hetfield during class I'm gay but man for a dude he's yummy here
In my experience only over-the-hill elderly people and hipster douchebags hate this era of Metallica.
The "worst era" is really just one or two albums, if anything, and not this one.
Yes, it was a bit of a shift in style compared to their 80's stuff, but being able to play more than one style of music is not a flaw.
I was a child in the 90's, and a kid on my hockey team who would bring a boombox and play the Black Album in the locker room to psych up before games is basically why I ever became interested in the entire metal genre. I love 90's Metallica.
I've always been more of a hard rock fan than a metal fan. So even though Metallica diehards look down on this era, it's much more in line with the music genre I prefer.
This song is really hauntingly beautiful, so sad it's also very underrated. I really like James' vocals here, they are very melodic and beautiful and also the bass and guitar sound great. This looks a lot more artistic than what they have done previously and i really enjoy it.
God I am so grateful for _"SeLLoUt"_ Metallica. These are masterpieces of tracks.
I notice that a lot of the "old" fans tapped out as soon as James found his voice, quite literally, and the band got a bit more serious about this business. Fascinating, really.
I’d rather them just stick to the thrash and heavy era stuff
@@pinkfloydmeddle6692 I agree. But I am also glad they went through this phase. They are still thrashers by nature. Everyone knows that Spit out the Bone is the hardest they've queefed for Metallica since Dyers Eve.

no offense, but have you read what some people say in the comments on these song, I swear most of them are haters, not me though I love these albums
@@Bearwindafloofboi It isn't because the song is bad. It is because the album was the main change from thrash to southern hard rock. On top of that they also completely changed their imagery to have shorter hair, large piercings and eye liner basically making them look like some old gay dudes trying to be hip and follow the trends. It was like opening up a box of cocoa puffs, and it all looked like apple jacks and tasted like cinnamon toast crunch. It is an understatement to say that it pissed a large portion of their core fan base who were able to still connect with the black album even though it pushed in to arena pop rock territory, but Load was the last straw. It is not something you are going to really understand if your first experiences with their music were in the 90's.

I've always loved Metallica, but over the years, my loyalty has swung to other groups, but now I realize James, Kirk, Lars & Jason are so deeply embedded in my heart, NO band could ever replace them. I listen to their '80s stuff & it brings me back to my teens when I 1st saw them at Monsters of Rock in Foxboro. They will ALWAYS be my 1st love!!! Rock on Metallica!!!!
You brought up the term "Monsters of Rock", & it reminded me of the Monsters of Rock scenario from 1988. The groups that played were The Scorpions, Kingdom Come, Dokken, Van Halen, and Metallica.
Fun fact:From what I heard, Dokken literally got booed off of the stage! Apparently, their "Musical selections", song-wise, made people so furious, that, before everything was said and done, Dokken walked off the stage...and I don't think they ever toured with the four other Bands that were on this particular tour.
At that point in time, there were definitely a lot of problems between George Lynch, the Guitarist, and Don Dokken, the Vocalist. From what I understand, Don Dokken can be a real Primadonna. Who needs to work with somebody that's like that?
Anyway-Dokken did one more album in the late 1980s, 1988, to be exact, called Beast From The East...but it didn't sell that well, garnering only Gold, in terms of Album Sales. (Gold is between 500,000-999,999 Album Units Sold). It was the beginning of the end for Dokken. By 1990, George Lynch was out of Dokken, and formed his own Band, Lynch Mob. That didn't do very well for George, though.....
& the rest, is History......
@@ronaldshank7589 That is EXACTLY the Monsters of Rock I am referring to. Yhis was about the time that Sammy Hagar had replaced David Lee Roth. So in Foxboro MA, people jammed to the other's music (I don't recall a problem with Dokken). It was SO hot that day, security brought out fire hoses & were spraying people down. I was so close to the front, James Hetfield head banged & sweated on me!!!!!! My 1st heavy metal moment. However, when Van "Hagar" came out to take the stage, people started leaving in droves in protest. It was GREAT!! That, too, was in 1988. Good times, incredible memories. Thanks for the reply, it was my 1st ever on RUclips. Keep rockin'!!
I'm with and agree100%! There is no one like these guys they get you deep and always will no matter my age. I grew up with these bands and will always have a deep place my soul when hearing them. The emotions and memories they bring. Metallica always!
It's weird you talk in terms of loyalty as if you joined a cult. See beyond this dysfunction, let these words inspire wisdom and not servitude. Do not be bound by these false prophets, see them for who they are. Don't you understand, don't you have eyes to see and ears to hear? Be free of this vampiric curse.
1:59 WHAT A VOICE ----- "SO TELL ME WHY YOU'VE CHOSEN ME". SOMETIMES with all of the yelling and screaming in rock we do not hear their great voice in the more MELLOW PARTS!!
I'm glad after so many years load actually gets the recognition it deserves.......such an underrated album
It is no underrated. Load kept Metallica on top after Black Album helped get them up there.
8 of the 14 songs were top 5 and this album won a bunch of awards.
I believe it was certified triple platinum a few years ago.
Reload is underrated having to follow this monster
@@tompatchak8706 i think critics were overly harsh on it, like usual with when they talked about metallica, but the sales dont lie

I didnt notice this time, and im going to listen to it now. ty!!
holy sh1t how did i never notice that haha
would be a pain in the ass having to hold that note without picking it like they have recorded on the album lol
This song so under rated and is one of the best of Metallica. Song and video. This song is a everyday soundtrack. Turn it up and go metal
This era was pure art for Metallica, so bad that fans didn't support them back then
BiLL I remember when it was only 25 $. To see them play 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
The problem it's not the music compositions they do. It's because their new albums have lost their origin - their soul. It's not the same.
Nah, this just didn't sound like a Metallica tune. They were pandering to the grunge scene when they should have went full throttle.
The original Bob Dylan fans were enraged when he ditched his acoustic guitar and changed things up. He went on to be one of, if not the biggest recording artist in music history. The original Metallica fans were mad when Metallica "sold out" on albums like the black album and Load, etc. These albums, along with reload, sold over 30 million copies world wide! Meanwhile for the most part Metallica has been back to there thrashing roots on Death Magnetic and Hardwired. It`s ALL great people. Just enjoy the "ride!"
Probably what drove people back was the Rockstar attitude they took, it wasn't just the music and the look. Just looking to the live shit video BTS, the Some kind of, monster movie and the, current interviews, Metallica has changed massively as people.
Load is in my top five favourite Metallica albums. This departure from thrash to experiment with more heavy metal, giving off a lot of Undertow vibes from the band Tool
Highly, highly, HIGHLY underrated. Everyone sounds amazing, and I’m so happy they did this album
This album is so completely underrated, thank you gentlemen for expressing things in words that I can not.
I love how stricking the imagery was in music videos back in the 90's. Like the videos itself were simple but there were so many great concepts and they were always doing different things with the camera to keep your brain engaged and fishing for all the concepts and references. They don't make music videos like this anymore.
Metallica Load 1996
1996
This video is heavily -ripped off of- inspired by the “Heart Shaped Box” video…
@@dewilew2137 Yees
This applies to videos up until 2001-2003. Since then music videos just aren't as good even if done with hundreds of millions of dollars budget.
Coming from a person who listened to Metallica ever since Ride The Lightning and learnt every song on all the albums on the guitar, and as I started to grow older, I felt Load and Reload were the best Metallica. To me Load and Reload were their best albums. The "newer" albums since St. Anger, I just couldn't relate anymore.
At first I thought this video was WTF, but now I think it's pretty damn badass. Plus I fucking love this song! Load and Reload were so underrated
If anyone has ever been diagnosed with depression, I'm sure could easily relate. What an amazing way to express it.
This song is about cancer
He described my darkness in this song perfectly.he put into words how i feel so precise, its scary
@@fantawi7999 well i see depression in it too... everybody see there his demons
Lol as if you need to be diagnosed with depression to appreciate this song, I'm pretty sure everyone's experienced something ungodly and dark that's made them feel this song
Thats the thing about metallica we can relate
The more I listen and re-listen to Load and Reload - the more I like them. They keep speaking to me.
yeah, in 2019, and in 2020, 2021, 2022...etc i listen this song
i think this one is one of the best of Metallica, the video, the lyrics, and the sound of this song is really amazing
Jason was "just" a bass player, but still, he put so much more into the songs, and yes, maybe Trujillo is a good bass player, but since Jason left the band i feel like something is missing (maybe that's just me), but at this time Metallica was so great and "grown up" they music was really something... i feed it once and now it stays.... in my ears...
amazing track from an amazing era
The BEST!!! AND...They sound tbe same in concert!!!!
Edit.. Last concert i was at was March 1998. My Bday present.. Found out i was pregnant before i left for concert. I was 20. I was so sober n they sounded awesome. Lars rocked the drums
You can really feel the pain this song transmit, the lyrics combined with the depressive tone of the bass and guitar is really effective, it feels like suddenly razor edges are forming on my throat
ESPECIALLY when James screams I DONT WANT IT WANT IT NOUOUOUU
still alive?
I feel for the lords love in this song
Betooie Torres I feel bad for my man Risotto

Makes me get a stabbing pain in my throat, like a pair of scissors.
Шедевр. Одна из немногих групп, у которых приятно слушать не только музыку, но и смотреть клипы. После просмотра клипа, остаётся ощущение, что побывал на выставке картин.
love this song. its about getting rid of the parts of yourself that you don't like. like a
part of yourself that you hate and you are just trying to purge yourself of. until it sleeps.
Hot take:Metallica adopted a more mainstream sound and songwriting method to become a gateway band into metal. And a massive portion of their fans and metal heads in general went down exactly this route. You can hate them for their change in direction, but their sound and style for Black/Load/Reload was a big reason why metal had such a massive resurgence in the 2000’s on. Thanks Metallica👌🏻
This song is undeniably a metal anthem in my book, easily one of the most somber pieces I've heard from the genre. Every piece of the song is damn near perfect from the bass and drums to the vocals. If people have a problem with different approaches to art then those people truly don't appreciate art
I hate most of those albums, but I aplreciate where they come from and what it is
I disagree..bands like Fear Factory, Machine Head, Type O Negative, Slipknot and Pantera is why metal made a big resurgence in the 2000's
RIGHT ON!
@@redfirefox3568 I agree with you. Metallica was KILLING heavy music by moving to alt-rock. They weren't breaking any new ground. You would be a fucking moron to think that. They were simply following the trends because they were afraid they would no longer be relevant with their 80's thrash sound. The ones keeping heavy music alive were the ones RedFox listed, along with bands that didn't weaken their sound, like Testament and Slayer
"Load" is my favorite Metallica album, and I don't give a shit what you think.

Absolutely masterpiece musically and visually. To me, it's a depiction of the sin nature and spirit of temptation that lives inside all of us
I can feel this song so bad...this is a masterpiece, both song and video
James: I'm a crazy guy trapped in thorns
Kirk: I'm put on a cross
Lars: I wear a feathery scarf and eyeliner
Jason: What about me?
James: See that dirt and mud that looks like pudding?
Jason: Yeah?
James: Go play in it
What does kirks cross say?
nice
Ha!
Lol
Johnny Wheels yes but James sings about washing off the dirt meaning that even if you are correct he is trying to rid the devil from his life not summon him and it shows them kicking away the devils and trying to kill them meaning they are portrayed as evil and god as a good being so it actually has a holy meaning
Short list for my favorite song ever. Criminally underrated.
I love the 90s vibe in this video. It's reminiscent of the videos for Zombie by the Cranberries, Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana, and Losing My Religion by REM
I dont care what anyone says. LOAD is one of the best albums ever made, so many good songs.
Lenn my its my favorite from Metallica
Load and Reload are some of their best works, people only hate it because the band cut their hair
@@lous2187 Load and Reload were quite successful albums. And very influential to many musicians, not just in metal. There were will always be nagging old widows complaining, when something changes. It's part of the fun.
It's not bad, but it doesn't hold up against master pieces like ...And Justice For All, Master Of Puppets and Ride The Lightning

James’s voice was at its best then! Iconic.
You can tell how grunge/alt rock changed everything for everybody, this song and video seem to closely mirror "Heart Shaped Box"
REM losing my religion did it first in 1990 then Metallica unforgiving in 1991
Heart shaped box was in 1993

I didn't know this was an unpopular Metallica song? It was always one of my favs. If people don't like this song it's probably because they are lucky enough not to relate to it ♥
It isn't because the song is bad.
This is the only top 10 metallica single so
@@georgewalker81 well, that's the point. For a lot of guys, thrash metal bands are not supposedto have hit singles. I remember that they criticized even the haircuts back in the day. This show how closed mind some metal fans are...
Danielle Watson why? Why am I an idiot for explaining to people why their fans were pissed off back in the day? Am I wrong? Explain... Idiot.
It's not a bad song it's just that the loyal fan base could not come to grips with the change in style at the time. The song is ok but nothing compares to the Metallica albums up until the black Album of the early 90s. I was a loyal fan but I was not too crazy about Load when it first came out. I lost touch after the Reload album
This is clearly one of the great Metallica songs post Black Album. I say this as someone who listens to the Black Album from start to end. When Load and Reload came out, this song stood out from the others. PERFECTION!
Where do I take this pain of mine?
I run but it stays right by my side.
So tear me open, pour me out
There's things inside that scream and shout
And the pain still hates me
So hold me, until it sleeps.
Just like the curse, just like the stray
You feed it once and now it stays
Now it stays.
So tear me open but beware
There's things inside without a care
And the dirt still stains me
So wash me until I'm clean.
It grips you, so hold me
It stains you, so hold me
It hates you, so hold me
It holds you, so hold me...
Until it sleeps.
So tell me why you've chosen me
Don't want your grip, don't want your greed
Don't want it.
I'll tear me open, make you gone
No more can you hurt anyone
And the fear still shakes me
So hold me, until it sleeps.
It grips you, so hold me
It stains you, so hold me
It hates you, so hold me
It holds you, holds you, holds you
Until it sleeps...
(I don't want it, want it
Want it, want it, want it, no!)
So tear me open but beware
There's things inside without a care
And the dirt still stains me
So wash me 'til I'm clean.
I'll tear me open, make you gone
No longer will you hurt anyone
And the hate still shapes me
So hold me, until it sleeps.

Thanks for the lyrics 🙂
This era of Metallica is criminally underrated, and mainly coz some idiots rejected it just because it wasn’t thrash and they can’t handle bands trying different shit.
There are a lot of gems from Load and ReLoad - brilliant musicianship, some of Hetfields best lyrics, and great musical arrangement.
you must address what meant to be Thrasher in the eighties. Those 'idiots' you call had a whole conception against the establishment. That is precisely what Metallica rubbed in our faces with this album and its commercial proposal. I'm not saying is a bad album, I'm just saying it was a kind of moral betrayal to most of the 80's and early 90's fans. Those who arrived to Metallica later, probably don't give a damn about it. I do.
Right cutting off your hair and wearing fucking makeup lipstick and nail polish these MFers wrote Masters Of Puppets for pete sakes.

Metallicas history as a whole , musically, its a masterpiece and is all part a of whole picture.
