Love this. I am a fat 67-year-old widow. I have been fat to slim and fat again my entire life. I have accepted it. I have recently started to walk the local trails here. I like using the state-maintained trails as I am on my own and I feel more secure with the steady stream of joggers, walkers and bicyclists zipping by me. I only stay out a few hours at a time as I need to get home to take care of my dogs. And I only walk a few miles at a time, keeping in mind that I have to walk back to my car. But it has helped me get stronger and more active. I've started to study herbalism this year to keep my brain busy, so these hikes are also specimen collecting journeys. Do remember to bring a water bottle even if it's a short hike. You never know when you will need it.

I am a newish hiker and didn’t think I would want to try backpacking but you have totally inspired me to try it! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your stories and gear advice about what you have encountered. Thanks so much for taking the time to share. You’re welcome to come hike with me in beautiful Oregon anytime,

One of the most informative videos I've seen. I have an old fashioned double sized sleeping bag for "two" that fits great but is huge and heavy. I thought about getting two small lightweight ones and zipping them together. Our old ones did that but the last time I went camping until this summer was 30 years ago. I hope you do more hiking/camping videos.

I'm a bit late for this one but since summer is just around the corner, I thought I'd mention these things out of my pretty much life long personnal experience as a fat backpacker.
1- the hiking boots are essential, in my opinion, to give support to my ankles. it's not really about the landscape for me rather than the extra weight that I'm carying. I've saved myself a lot of hurt thanks to that extra support arround my feet and ankles.
2- hiking in a skirt is super comfortable as long as I wear something to protect my thighs with short leggings or something like that. it might defeat the purpose of peeing more easily but I find it's worth it, especially if it's hot and I'll be sweating ( which I will... ). If I do get some chaffing because of chub rub, zinc cream - like for baby's butts - or something thick that stays on the skin and creates a physical barrier on my skin is a life saver. keep in mind though that mosquitoes will have full acces to your legs and butt...
3- for sleeping, I prefer the hammock-tent with a foam insulating mat.
If I'm in a tent, I sleep mainly on my sides and in order for my hips not to hurt the only thing that works for me is the inflatable camping mat. mine is a them-a-rest. it was quite pricey but it works miracles. It's quite wide also. I have the 3/4 lenth one to save on weight and stuff to carry but my feet don't get cold easily even though they are sticking out of the mat. If it gets really really cold, I just stick my backpack under my feet. you always need a sleeping pad to keep the cold and humidity of the ground from reaching you but I personnally don't mind if my limbs end up not on it... such is life if you spread or move a lot when you sleep ;)
If you do mind, you could use a double sleeping pad or two sleeping pads coupled by a sheet or some other "coupling device". do not forget the coupling device (elastics or straps will do just fine) because you will surely end up sleeping on the tent's floor with a mattress on either side of you.
I stongly NOT reccomand the self inflating pads. they always end up deflating throughout the night.
4 - as far as sleeping bags go, I feel very uncomfortable in mommy shaped sleeping bags. I much prefer the rectangle ones that unzip all the way around. it also has to have a hood so that you can turn on you belly at some point in the night. also, I always carry a fleece sleeping bag cover and ideally a light lining too. that way, I can regulate my temperature more easily and if I feel stuck in my sleeping bag, I can unzip it a bit and still keep warm and be covered by the fleece blanket.
the important thing is to have fun and for that we need to be comfortable. I hope you tell us more about your backpacking journey

My husband is very very overweight. I myself am a fat person. He hikes in the Catskills Mountains. He buys from REI. They have plus size packs. I am incredibly out of shape. He hates the beach but went with me a couple weeks ago. Now I owe him. He is going on a hike Labor Day weekend and wants me to come along. Not gonna lie… I am looking forward to the snacking part of the hike😜My biggest fear is peeing in the woods off the trail. I am afraid to go too far off because of the snakes but if I don’t go far enough off, people will see me. I am scared to death to go and so excited all at the same time😳😳Amy Beth… you go girl! Get your hike on❤️🤗

Ok, I admit to not watching this because I have had some foot pain issues and thought my hiking days were behind me. Turns out they are not, the foot pain is a nerve and can be relieved with insoles. We thought it was from my back injury, some is, but not the majority! So, yay! Gentle hiking and camping may be in my future again. And Amy Beth! This is an awesome video! I grew up with a military dad and we went camping alllll the time. My teen self was so over it, but my adult self would love to do MORE. Anyway, I learned stuff from you!!
Also re sleeping bags... I used to think I had to have one. I grew up with them. But then a friend and I went once and I did not have a sleeping bag, and she said take your quilt... and I am a convert!! I love quilts because I can stick a leg out if I get hot, I am not confined by the zipper, being somewhat of a starfish myself.... I love quilts. Ikea twin size down quilts rock for camping! And they stuff! And if you wanted a big bag.... sew two together!
I also bought some inexpensive sleeping bags that zip and are more square in shape, but I do not find them... well, I like the Ikea quilts better. I just do. And I do not have mine sewn together, I just burrito! 😂🥰 Anyway.... Sorry this is long, but I would love more camping videos!! Even if you took some knitting and did a little Knit in the Wild while Camping, sort of added on at the end of your videos.... Or gardening shots. But that is me, and my one little vote ;-)

Amy Beth this is one of the best hiking gear videos I’ve ever seen. I too had a problem getting out of a tent once. Made me laugh every time I thought about it. My only dis would be knitting your own wool hiking socks- this would have been a great entry drug for potential yarn addicts. I can’t wait to hear about your next trip. Thanks

Thank you for posting this video! I have a fascination with backpacking (living vicariously through blogs like The Trek) and am a fiber arts enthusiast. I am more of a fat solo day hiker but your video made me consider backpacking as a viable activity. Not to brag (just kidding), I do wear my hand knit socks while hiking in the fall and winter. I have plans to make some 1/4 height ones for warm weather because my shoes are less likely to eat them than no-shows like you mentioned.
On the subject of trekking poles, for anyone who is interested, I highly recommend cork grips. I have found plastic grips cause blisters even on a day hike.
Thanks again for posting this. If there had also been a mention of apples my Venn diagram would be complete.

As a fellow fat girl I appreciate this so much!
    It really is hard :(
Check out the PACT poop kit! The wet-wipe tabs in that kit are safe to bury even in areas where burying NORMAL tp is illegal. There are no artificial chemicals and they come with mycelium tabs as well to break the wipe and waste down MUCH MUCH MUCH faster! :):)
I would go quilt over sleeping bag and look for 'customizable' and 'wide' options!

I am also a fan of the word "fat" as a descriptor. My partner always thinks I'm being down on myself when I refer to myself as "fat" but it's just an adjective, and a quite accurate one. Thank you for discussing your gear choices for backpacking. I've been wanting to start camping and backpacking but I didn't know where to start.
Side note: I am absolutely obsessed with the pink/purple/white handspun behind you. It's gorgeous!

I beg you to LEARN and USE a GOOD compass. I also highly recommend a personal locating device (available online). Please refer to channels 'Missing 911" CanAm Missing project for stories of people that seem to vanish while in the backcountry. David Paulidess will tell stories of those that hiked, hunted, wandered, and went missing. Never take an outing as a non-challenge activity. I also recommend Dr. Sean Baker. He is a very physical-looking person. He discusses certain dietary aspects of good health. No, Dr. Baker is not a vegan but a meat eater. I am sure you'll grow interested in both of these channels. I can recommend many more channels, but this is a start. I do not want to hear that you got lost in a minor excursion. I'm just begging you to be safe! Thank you for your channel. I loved the apple butter video!

Loved this. My husband and I both refer to ourselves as fat. I too have used the product your mother recommended. I am CHEAP (except for yarn and bags). On the prevention path, I use a homemade product. I make squares of cotton knit (think T-Shirt), fill an airtight container (1 quart freezer box) and pour white vinegar in till it is about 1 inch deep, seal and allow the vinegar to wick up to dampen all, if needed add more vinegar. I have used these for years, the only time I have skin issues is when I skip them. After using them, I put them in a mesh washing bag, when I run low, I run it through the washer and dryer.

Fun fact about REI - my next door neighbor used to work for them, and the way they would test the strength of their tents was to pitch one on top of a van and drive on the road before it was the 405 here in Washington. Sometimes he was the driver, and sometimes the "camper"🥴😳

I carry moleskin in my first aid kit which looked very similar to what you used on your toe. I've put it on hot spots and directly in my boot or shoe if there are places that are rubbing. I was multitasking so forgive me if you mentioned it, but I've had good luck with Campmor for gear as well. Brilliant information! REI, and other stores here in Minnesota have been great for me in all my sizes over many decades for camping/hiking/backpacking/snow shoeing/cross country skiing/etc. The staff have always been more than helpful. Then there's the, REI end-of-year 10% back we get to have fun with! I am so happy you covered so much content and so thoroughly. I Hope this gets viewed and referred to anyone who is interested in getting outdoors and needs special info for our special needs. I too am a fan of the cream! Oh and the I found the wicking clothing comes in handy for the hot flashes and SWEATS which I have been dealing with since my late 30's and I am now 70+. Doing genealogy/family history I often think of our great-greats, the log cabin or sod home dwelling women and how they managed when menopause hit., and those poor women in the south! Happy backpacking! Cheers and hugs from Minnesota

I think I understand the well-intentioned sentiment of your comment, but I want to offer this: health is a) a completely nebulous concept and b) not attainable by all folks.
So, I would say being “healthy” is not all that is important. I am not “healthy” by medical standards, so if being healthy is what matters, I don’t matter, folks with chronic disease don’t matter, many disabled folks don’t matter, folks with mental health issues don’t matter.
Again, I think I understand your sentiment, but I want to challenge your words to cast a broader net.
Alternatives might be “I’m glad you are enjoying this activity!” “I love backpacking too. Welcome!”
