I was just about to ROAST your ass on that too then i saw this.
EYE SAY-UH
Also, I have never once heard the term "sex kick." Its always neutral air or bair lol
smfh
I love how nobody showed up until he frickin baited people. I’m just imagining how it must have felt to see tons of people show up like “heard you were talking shit” only to do exactly what he wanted them to
smartest shit talker on the face of the earth
really embodies the “settle it in Smash” mentality
There's an old adage: "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer." This seems to be the same principle.
By being so many move ahead he ruined is life. The man clearly is a chess player.
Big Brain time.
Lol so the entire smash scene was kickstarted when like 50 people wanted to beat this one guy. Nice
Never underestimate a community's hate
Dude, when a person says there the best at smash.....you know what comes next.
The best way to get the right answer on the internet is to first post the wrong answer and say it's the right one.
Kyle Yuen *competitivity
Reverse psychology saves the day yet again
The Melee scene was kicked off by "fight me IRL"
Toxicity was used as fertilized xd
Checks out.
Damn, thanks Matt. Without you, golden tweets like "I'm getting wobbled in my favorite game" would have never existed

So basically youre telling me that the melee competitive scene became active all because a guy said he was the best player in the world
*Classic Melee*
Yep
Deezie: Want to come play?
Everyone:
Deezie: None of you can beat me!
Everyone: _Rushes to the tournament._
The way you have evolved your content from cool montages, to these neat history stories about one of the most mysterious oddities in gaming (melee) is incredible. Good shit AsumSaus
Reminds me a lot of the transition EmpLemon made from RUclips Poop maker (basically fancy montages) to documentarian (they even did an hour-long feature on Hungrybox, as I'm sure you probably know). Maybe documentaries are the next big format of RUclips.
WillyMac! Omg bro I love your content! Glad to see you're at least a mild fan of melee man.
These videos are so well made and interesting and clear that you could show them to someone who barely knows anything about the game and they’d enjoy them
Hey for real, I forgot that I had originally subscribed for the montages but am loving this detailed insight of the various quirks the game has to offer both in game and out

RIP to Rick May, the voice of Peppy Hare, the soldier from TF2, and more. Trust your instincts, never give up.
Oh thanks for telling us that, I didn't know it.

Okay, so this is sad but, the way you quoted Peppy hurt. That shit hit me way too hard.

They're informative, easy to digest, and have amazing audio and visual quality as well. The format of your videos are extremely unique and it's easy to see why you have 100k. Congrats!

Hi sypiss
Last time i was this early, sheik was still top 3 on the tier list.

"It's never been referred to as shine by the team that worked on Smash"
That reminds me, in Mario Kart, what the hell is a "spiny shell"
I always just called it the blue shell. Spiny shell sounds a little neater though.
the, uh, shell of a Spiny (the thing Lakitu throws in the main-series games)?
@@meta04 the shell of a Spiny is red, though, and always has been. It's changed shade a few times, but always red.
fast forward to the mario movie, we now have an official source from Nintendo calling it "blue shell" lol
@@elijahpadilla5083 They made it blue so you could recognize it as something unique I imagine. That or the devs of Mario Kart were thinking of Spike Tops, which do come in blue form.
Today in history lesson: How someone from the Tekken scene kicked of competitive Smash Bros.
Tekken and Smash Bros are such a great duo.
Wavedashing too. It's funny how Tekken has affected Smash
but then there are tweets of players who play traditional fighters shitting on the smash bros community for being different
Because the Smash community is garbage.
The sad part is that one of the two got an actual supported by editor fighting scene. And that's most likely because they choose to recruit someone who was able to create a grassroot scene then gave them budget. Instead of Nintendo who just cockblocked the shit out of their scenes.
@@GreenChillZone you seem to be implying that any competitive game doesn't have a garbage community
Seeing peppy in these recordings is just sad after Rick mays death
dont worry hes barrel rolliing on the other side

me, an intellectual: Wife says it's supposed to be pronounced this way in the doc
100% thought you were gonna say “Matt Deezie Dahlgren is the daddy”
I personally think "the Godfather of Smash" is a nice title
7:45: How could you forget the most perfect Smash game, Smash for 3DS
Smash Run in the 3DS game probably makes it my favourite one to play.
But it doesn't have piranha plant so that makes it garbage
or Project M
Smash 3DS is a better game for competitive play compared to Project M
@@RedTotey tru
Deezie really just baited everyone into going to a smash tourney lol.
On the subject of Star Fox specifically:
The on-foot gameplay in Star Fox Assault (as well as the entirety of Assault itself) is mad underrated and I'm glad Nintendo gave it another go.
Hopefully one day Star Fox as a franchise gets back to where it needs to be, whether or not they focus on the Arwings.
Great video as always! Pretty plausible origin for the shine!
As well, I think it's cool that not only is the term "wavedashing" borrowed from Tekken, but Melee's competitive environment is inspired by Tekken's as well!
Same. 4 player Assault is crazy fun.
And though it wasn't initially intended for the franchise, Starfox Adventure is solid as well- one of my favorite gamecube titles.
Assault vs mode is top 5 most fun things to do in a gamecube
I spent so many hours playing Star Fox Assault multiplayer. Riding on arwings, playing guided missile only, sniper only, blowing up every tree on Sauria, booster packs on zoness sea base...
Been following Melee for years now
Never heard of Deezie before, ngl
This is a prime channel for keeping history like this alive for the newcomers, thanks for the video
I literally never clicked a notification faster. Congrats. You're a top tier content creator.

I think you nailed it when you said the shines reflective property probably started at the barrel roll
But the actual design itself is based on the rings you pick up in starfox 64, with 3 gold rings extending your health bar, while silver ones act as health kits
Did he just call isai “eesai”
Pretty sure I recall that being actually correct. It's more that people ran with calling his name wrong so long that it became standard. Kind of like how people mispronounce Ally's name.
Todd Jay It’s correct. People pronounce it “Izaiah” (Eye-Zay-uh) for whatever reason
That's how his name is actually pronounced and probably how his parents say it. Although the American English pronunciation Isaiah is derived from the Bible, same as Isai except in Spanish.
Yeah that’s how it’s actually pronounced it states so in episode three of the smash doc.

So nobody is gonna point out that the hexagonal shape is actually in Starfox 64, and its literally on screen in the upperleft corner (besides the number 032) in the footage at 03:20? Awesome video regardless, as always
Yeah those are rings you collect in star fox. That might be where they got the shape from.
I love that you added Squidward's walking sound effect when you showed the Star Fox team on foot!
Honestly I was always more confused about where the heck Fox’s up B came from.
Same. I thought he was going to talk about THAT move...
Fox has specials other than neutral b and down b?
Japanese myths associating fox spirits with fire, I'm assuming.

You probably won't see this, but i'm not a melee guy. I grew up with brawl, smash 4, and i've played hundreds of hours of ultimate.
But something about your videos... they're so entertaining and informative. You make a game I have no interest in playing so interesting, so technical, and so deep.
I'm glad your channel is doing well man, can't wait for more videos :)
Rip rick may (voice actor of peppy) “do a barrel roll”
Pretty sure the design comes from the “Supply Rings” that you collect in Starfox 64. You know, the spinning shiny things you fly into to collect?

Seriously, Matt, thank you.
Fun fact: The "Super FX" label on the box is referencing an additional chip on the game cart that allowed for real 3D graphics on the Super Nintendo.
Additional fun fact: The reason the romdump we had of StarFox 2 15 years ago was such a pain to get to work for so long was because it was reliant on a successor chip, the Super FX 2, which there was no data for for the longest time. (Since StarFox 2 was never released in that form)
I like the complete refual to acknowledge the existence of starfox adventures.
I love this video! The graphics you used and all the other various bits that made this video fun like the SFX used really show how much your content has grown.
Never insult someone for living with their parents.
After all, they could be the one to start the tournament scene of YOUR fighting game
I don’t even play Melee but your videos are some of the best edited and directed on RUclips so here I am
Honestly I love this video its so wholesome I am truly happy for Matt and I honestly wish him the best, what a man.

You are so incredibly good at making videos. Just your ability to tell a story or explain a detail is quite remarkable. Really been enjoying your stuff as I get caught up with melee since I dropped it when brawl came out (Don’t worry, I didn’t play brawl competitively, I just quit smash altogether 6 months later, only returning to smash 4)
Amazing mini-doc. Informative, short, and sweet. Keep it up! Subscribed.
I love the dulcet tones of AsumSaus’s soothing voice as he narrates
I’m not gay but I want to marry you.
*AsumSaus says “Ee-sai” instead of “Ai-zay-yuh”*
Holy shit I want a divorce.
According to the documentary, Ee-sai is how it's supposed to be pronounced, but Americans anglicized the shit out of it.
@@syweb2 nah I think that's just wife just assuming it's meant to be pronounced that way due to it looking kinda Japanese on a surface level, when in reality, it was probably spelt like that because melee has a character limit of only 4 characters for your name tag in-game, so he just simply used the first 4 letters of the name "Isaiah", and the name just stuck from there
I bet you write 9s on your high school essays because the last point about him being the soul brought everything together and just left me there thinking holy shit, great video

Also soldier from TF2
Your title makes it seem like Fox and Shine had a baby and it was called competitive smash. Well, that actually is true lol
I've noticed for a long time that the characters with made-up movesets tend to be better than those actually inspired by their games. Link and Mario easily take the most inspiration, and they tend to be average at best with some exceptions in the more recent games. When you make-up a moveset for a character, its really easy to go overboard. Captain Falcon in 64 and Melee is prolly the best example. Never does anything outside of his racer in his actual games, so they used the manga and cartoon to say "hmm... well I bet he COULD do this this and this...".
the quality of your content, from start to now, cannot be understated :) fantastic as always.
Dude I gotta say, I really love your videos
Nice short little snippets of history, it's sick and such a nice change of pace from the 40+ minute broad histories that are usually popular. I mean I love those, but this is a nice break
