A synthesizer, such as the Moog System 55 shown in this video, is a perfectly legitimate musical instrument in it's own right, it produces musical sounds electronically, rather than by all the usual traditional methods of producing musical sounds, the original idea was to have a way of generating new musical sounds that had never been heard before.
