I just constructed a living fence made from Gliricidia sepium. This tropical nitrogen-fixing tree has an ability to root from pieces stuck in the ground. Just dig holes and jam in the sticks - they'll grow. Over time, the joints should naturally graft together. We'll see if the vines hold or if I need to tie them with twine. If I keep this watered, if should root into the ground and be strong enough to keep out cows, goats and sheep. No more pigeon pea disasters!
If you live farther north, you can do this kind of a fence with willow branches and make some very beautiful living fencing. It's sort of a fence-hedge. I've wanted to build a living fence for a long time - we'll see how this one does. I have ideas on making others with moringa, gumbo limbo and even purple mombin. Another option: you can start tree seedlings, then plant them at 45 degree angles, two in each hole facing away from each other, and tie them together. Awesome, right?
