My guess is the previous owner left ethanol fuel in it for too long. There are folks that will stand by their ethanol fuel but in my experience it has always went bad like you see in this video when left too long . I suspect that ethanol attracts water which then creates the muck in the tank and carbs. I don’t see that problem with premium non ethanol fuel, my Honda 4 trax had at least 5 year old premium none ethanol fuel in it and continued to start right up and run perfectly every time. I finally drained the tank and put fresh gas in it. The gas I drained looked fine so I divyed it up between my motorcycles that I regularly use….no problems. 😎
Joe I can't believe how far you've come over the years from working in your parents garage to how well you're doing now. Good for you my man. You work very hard on this channel and it It shows.👍

I need to find one for parts for my 01 Rubicon. Wow, the tool kit was actually with it. Those Hondamatic units will last forever as long as the oil is serviced regularly and has never been run dry or anything. Also, when replacing the angle sensor, using the cheapo Chinese ones can cause swashplate issues when they fail. That's the sensor that it's most important to replace with a high-quality sensor like oem, Sensortech, CW, and Wrench Rabbit. I'm currently in the process of basically re-building my Rubicon with 6500 mi on the odometer. Right now, i've got the rear end apart, cleaning the housing, replacing the bearings and seals, and getting ready for the new ring gear/axle shaft. Great video to wake up to this morning.
The main thing I've seen on these older Formans is the shift computer and shift motor issues. I have no idea why people throw out the OEM carburetors when they install the junk carbs.
Oil was put in before it was crated and left factory. Had one similar come in for service, was running horrible, asked gim if hes ever changed the oil, he looked at me like it was new. Why it was fine. The 1uad was trashed, drained it and big chunks of gunk plopped out. Filter was original, it was packed about solid.great job Joe!!!

I picked up a trx500fa2(same thing as yours) recently as well. Paid $600 for it. A carb clean, freed up the rear brakes. Runs quite well. Just doing maintenance like adjusting the valves, oil changes etc. Mine as well had water siting in the air box. Makes you wonder how it got into it just sitting.
People need to stop being so scared of dogs,I get that some attack and whatnot but that's just bad training or lack of it..they sense your fear and take advantage
When you opened up that air filter i thought it had been submerged in a pond and was totalled. Turns out the seller was a true gent and i think that quad is my favourite 2vintage machine. It looks good and sounds great. A perfect tool for cutting trails.
My brother has one of these and he's had for close to 20 plus years and he's done a bunch a stuff with it towing things, plowing snow pulling stuff and knock on wood it's still runs great. His is I think maybe the light army green. But he takes really good care of anything he has whether it's his vehicles or outdoor power equipment he's got equipment that's close to 30 years old and they still run.
Simple owners maintenance at required intervals, they'll go for a long time.... years.. but that means we'd be struggling for business. Oh well, glad to see well kept machines. These farmers around here, buy them and run them til they die, then expect us to fix them... great vid!!
You should really try using Rotella T4 or T6 oil. I've been using the T4 many years, read the back of the bottle it has JASO MA/MA2 rating. Can beat the price.
I enjoy watching your repair videos and I learn lots from watching. I have a 2017 Polaris Sportsman 450 EPS. It has been great and reliable. Changed factory battery from wet cell to AGM sealed. I'm happy for u that you found a good deal and an honest seller. I would have trouble buying something that wouldn't start up. I think you should really play hardball with anyone that is selling something they cannot crank up right there in front of u. Hey great video !!! put that there float in a vacuum sealer and the leak will appear , just use your skill to operate the sealer to what is needed . Thanks !!!
Wow, what a deal. I'd never find anything like that where I live. Funny there wasn't a filter tube around the stand pipe inside the tank. You should have brought a can of raid.
I have a 1st gen oem rubicon carburetor i cleaned and never used. I eneded up having a faulty $20 iridium sparkplug. If you need it your welcome to it. Viola TN.
Man never let your differentials get low The oil breaks down so much faster and it doesn't take long for there to start being some issues. It literally cost you a few dollars 1 qt can do like 3 or 4 differentials fluid changes.
Love your videos and your work precedure is very good but you could uncover fuel starvation issues in seconds with an ether spray. My personal favourite in Australia is a product marketed as "Start Ya Bastard".
I bought a carb from zoom zoom for my Yamaha Warrior. It was brand new. I took the bowl off and inspected it. It was spotless. I installed the carb on the machine and filled it with gas. It ran. Some life stuff happened and the machine sat for 3 months. I went to start it again and nothing, I took the carb off and it was gunked just like this one. I think there must be some chemical in there that reacts with gas and gunks it up. I ended up having to clean everything. It was regular ethanol gas but 3 months shouldn’t have made it gunk that badly.
I have a 2006 Rubicon here with 7000 km I never wear a helmet, I use my quad to haul my firewood, I ride on the lake in spring and. and plow the snow Most of the time I ride on low gear and never ride fast
Invesat in a can of Kroil to help loosen really stuck parts. Yes it is expensive but works better than PB Blaster. $20 a can unless you find it on sale.😢😢. Or put the carb body in your ultrasonic cleaner for 1 hour. Much better to use the ultrasonic cleaner to get to all the small passages in carbs.
"Beware of Dogs"...and the rude seller lets his dog jump all over you. Not the dog's fault but the dim bulb owner..You are are patient that I would be..
Actually seems pretty good. Likely never seen any maintenance though. I hope you didn't mow poison ivy. That's a really good way to spray the oily nasty stuff all over!
Good Luck a $1400.00 gamble on a Honda is usually a decent gamble ! i hope it pays off I personally am a big fan of Honda products i’ve owned several Automobiles ,Lawnmower , a couple of small engines and i still have my Dads Q1964 S90 motorcycle he properly stored indoors for 40 years it’s all original minus a refresh gasket kit , new tires and tubes ,battery and minor other small parts I rebuilt the fuelnPetcock once and i think that’s it i’ve also owned a couple of big Honda Road bikes i’ve absolutely loved owning and riding despite your manual specs i kind of feel 62pounds of Compression is showing signs of possible valve issues or something Internal needing replacement or attention although it may run okay the nice thing about most Hondas is parts are easy to find and reasonably priced as a rule depending on what your plans are it might be time to refresh those gaskets etc ?
Decompression valve - How can you check the FULL compression to be sure all is good if the valve is opened on start. can you bypass it to check rings and bore condition?
I have essentially the same motor on my honda. Ive bought these cheap chinese carbs every year because its just easier for me then to clean them. Mine sits outside all year under a tarp when not in use but for whatever reason when these carbs sit in the elements they dont seem to last like oem.
An honest seller. You find those once in a blue moon. Good for him, and good for you.
I am still in the video - the carb JUST came out. "It needs a carb cleaning..." seems to be the go-to for any non-running machine. However, my heart sank when I saw the compression test. I am at 24 minutes so my fingers are still crossed 🙂
Besides a carb cleaning and few minor maintenance operations, it needed nothing more. I think the seller was quite honest!

Joe. Can you please start using Jade's toothbrush to clean things? Thanks.
P.S. We LOVE Vinny
I have a 2006 Rubicon here with 7000 km
I never wear a helmet,
I use my quad to haul my firewood, I ride on the lake in spring and. and plow the snow
Most of the time I ride on low gear and never ride fast
That’s not water 😮 lol, love the videos Joe! Keep them coming 👍🏻
I had the same problem with my 05 Raptor 350 SE. THE Carb, and pit cock was clogged and gummed up badly, carb will be rebuilt and new pit cock
Nice to get a good honest one now and again.
Would it be more cost effective just buying a new carb in most cases? Taking in the time in rebuilding one.
dusting/feathering plastics with flame will bring back shine like new. Takes a little practice tho. Once learned, game changer.
I need the plans for that mower shelter, that's a pretty neat shelter.
Very cool. And that lawn attachment is cool to
What color was the oil in ur mower looked same as 4 wheeler?
"Beware of Dogs"...and the rude seller lets his dog jump all over you. Not the dog's fault but the dim bulb owner..You are are patient that I would be..
Outstanding job and appreciate the filming for us....be safe
Actually seems pretty good. Likely never seen any maintenance though. I hope you didn't mow poison ivy. That's a really good way to spray the oily nasty stuff all over!
Sweet honesty for once 😊
You got this, Joe.
Definitely like the Rubicon's I have one myself
I have essentially the same motor on my honda. Ive bought these cheap chinese carbs every year because its just easier for me then to clean them. Mine sits outside all year under a tarp when not in use but for whatever reason when these carbs sit in the elements they dont seem to last like oem.
