Having experienced horrible side effects from ppis. I have decided to stop. The doc says that they are safe and have been in use since the eighties, but having worked in the health industry I am aware that some drugs that were deemed to be safe were withdrawn after being in use in excess of forty years. The amount of damage that can be done to the general health of the population is enormous. Minimum prescribing has got to be the best option. A lot of family physicians just go for the highest does right off the bat. More emphasis needs put on diet and exercise and relaxation techniques- this is where more prescribing is needed-. Everyone's body chemistry is different also drugs often interact with each other negatively and even interact with foodstuffs in off ways. As we age it takes the body longer to excrete drugs and toxins from the system. Be very careful about taking any kind of meds. Non chemical options are often the best.

Yes jon, I just had the Tif procedure 3 weeks ago if you have Gerd and regurgitation it will work good for you if you have LPR with extra esophageal symptoms in your throat and back of your mouth it totally sucks. I have LPR and Tif made my symptoms ten times worse. People with gerd so bad it goes up into the throat need a 360wrap, like Nissen fundoplication or Linx. If your gerd is just in your chest then Tif might work well for you for it is only a 270 to 300-degree wrap.

I was poisoned at a Chinese restaurant from undercooked chicken around 30 years ago. I've been on tablets all this time. I've pissed blood out of my backside, I couldn't sit on a toilet as the pain was so bad and sore my legs shook. I could eat only dry toast and water for 6 weeks.
I had campylobacter followed by colitis followed by helicobacter pylori.
Recent I've be diagnosed with asephigitus, duodenitis.
I ended up with a doctor visiting then calling an ambulance.
So I say take Nexium. It's expensive but you'll get over it with a decent diet and regular walking or cycling.

No alcohol, carbonated beverages, coffee, tea, chocolate, spicy foods, tomatoes or tomato sauce. I am free of my PPI at this time. Feel better than I have for several years. Good luck!! Despite all this "dismissal of scare stories" if you are prescribed Lansaprazole (a common PPI), then check out the literature in the pack that gives about four levels of side effects (1 in 100, 1 in 1,000, 1 in 10,000 etc), a long list of them...all which coincide with the 'scare stories' and go beyond them too, so obviously pharma is aware of the side effects and has to report them as a disclaimer and as a warning. It may well be an effective drug and useful, but if it is doing something effective, then like most chemical treatments there are often significant costs to the system, as the biochemistry in its natural God given form is a highly complex but balanced and integrated form where the various bodily processes and organs, all have their own optimum biochemistry... It isn't as simple as saying "Well this will work as you have an acid excess and this gets rid of the acid" As that acid serves many purposes. Withdrawal symptoms are a problem and long term use might well be a problem on many levels for some or many people.
