  • Venetian needle lace typical of the Burano island. At the Martina Vidal Atelier you can appreciate how these expert lace workers are still able to create lace using the same techniques as their ancestors of the 1600s.

I have a beautiful linen and lace tabletopper that I bought in Venice in 1980. It was fascinating to watch the ladies practice this amazing art. Thank you for the video.

Dear Lady of Good Success. I noticed your comment. My grandmother was from Venice as a lace maker and taught me. I started very young. Lace making takes years to be able to make. And good eyesight. Women went blind from making it hundreds of years ago. It also requires staminapatience and discipline to sit hour after hour doing this kind of work. I sold my work for awhile, people had to place their orders with me up to a year in advance. Then I got married and had 4 children. It becomes difficult to do this work with four children. I wanted to continue lace making but I discovered a faster, easier way that may interest you. I began doing Irish Lace Crochet. It doesn't take a lot of Equiptment. Go to your favorite craft Store like Hobby Lobby, and purchase a $15.00 Spool of Crochet thread, preferably in white and some steel crochet hooks in sizes 7,8,9,10,11 and 12. Go to tutorials on Utube for Irish crochet or buy instruction books online that will show you with illustrations how to do this. My suggestion is to start crocheting with a size 7 hook. as it is the largest and easiest to work with. Any pattern in Venetian needle lace can be duplicated in Irish or Italian crochet lace. Actually, because the crochet thread is thicker, the lace has more of a three dimensional effect. Can you crochet? Here is a sample: Using a size 7 hook, chain 6 stitches and join together. Now crochet 2 stitches in each stich in the circle. Join to starting stitch. Chain three, turn, ; Make 2 double crochet stitches in every stitch; join at the starting stitch. There you go. Some of the stitches in crochet lace are the same ones in needle lace. The difference is that what I tried to teach you here can be done in 5 or 6 minutes with a crochet hook take 3 or 4ctimes as long with traditional sewing thread and a needle. I hope you will try this. It is fun. Frustrating to learn but there are no end to what you can create to make beautiful lace. I have used it in a wedding dress, purses, tablecloths, pillow cases, etc. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!

They have to weld and then start with a new thread, a matter of knots ;-)

THEY WOULDNT!!! MY GRANDMOTHER WAS A LACE MAKER IN VENICE AND TAUGHT ME. I DID IT FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS UNTIL I GOT MARRIED AND HAD FOUR CHILDREN. AFTER THAT I CHANGED OVER TO ITALIAN CROCHETED LACE ORCIRISH CROCHETED LACE. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THIS IS A THICKER LACE WITH A THREE DIMENSIONAL EFFECT USING PADDED CORDS FOR BORDERS;. NEEDLE LACE OR CROCHET LACE MAKING, NO WAY CAN ANY OF US RUN OUT OF THREAD!!! I BUY MY THREAD IN $15.00 SPINDLES. WHENEVER I GO OUT, I AM ALWAYS STOCKING UP ON MORE. I HAVE 2 GIANT TUPPERWEAR CONTAINERS FULL OF THREAD!!! IT WOULD BE WELL WORTH YOUR WHILE TO TRY LACE MAKING. I HAVE DONE LACE MAKING FOR OVER 40 YEARS AND MADE JUST ABOUT HUNDREDS OF GARMENTS. GIVE IT A TRY!!!!
