I was in Dr. Wiest's class at U.S.M. the first year John began sitting in and discussing the war. He was a very moving speaker who you could tell was a kind and caring individual that had his life and spirit drained from him during this war. I feel honored to have been able to get to know him for that semester.

I sometimes wonder if it is fair to have these honorable vets recount their stories to us. They have to relive and dig up old pains, already forgotten.
I also look at the audience. Did I see someone wipe a tiny tear? Do I see bored people thinking, yeah.. could not have been that bad. Others maybe thinking cool, sounds like a great adventure.
      Should people know...yes!
      Should we respect all vets.....definitely.
But here we are, as the world, reapi g the economical and political benefits of the Russian/Ukrainian war. Lots of talk but no heed for the casualties. Both civilian and military. We learn from history that we do not learn from history.

I was a 23 year old squad leader, Sgt. E-5, and it's a terrible responsibility to have up to 10-12 men under you that you may have to order to their death. You find yourself forgetting about your own pain and endangerment and sometimes, overwhelmed. He was a great squad leader, from what I've read: he cared about each man under his charge. That's what makes a great leader. RIP Sergeant.

And it is perfectly right and good that "most of us will never experience" what he has seen and done. The US had no legitimate right or reason to be in Vietnam and he has to take some of the responsibility of "experiencing" what he did. He had options and choices like the rest of us at that time. Just b/c he experienced what he did...didn't give him legitimacy or authority.

It was totally how a man viewed the consequences of his choices. Resisting the Draft could result in prison, bad record or go to Canada. Obey the Draft meant Vietnam...and possibly death. Those that went to Vietnam were the type of men that saw the consequences of resisting to be unacceptable...therefore they felt they had "no choice". Yes they did...just like me. Many men "hide" behind the military Draft as the excuse for their choice. That simply was not the case. It was all about one's response to consequences and the value they put on them.

The Bible foretells a time when peace will be achieved not through mankind. Psalm 46:9 says regarding the Creator, Jehovah God:
“He is making wars to cease to the extremity of the earth.”
Jehovah God will accomplish true peace by means of his Kingdom, for which many sincere people have repeatedly prayed Matthew 6:9, 10:
"Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified. Let your Kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also on earth."
His Kingdom is not an elusive condition of the heart; it is a real government through which God will establish peace from one end of the earth to the other. The inspired prophet Isaiah foretold that subjects of that government will not “learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4) By means of a worldwide educational program, people will learn to live in peace and thus “beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears.”
