A couple of things I would recommend :
Hook a vacuum gauge on the carbs and tune them for maximum vacuum. Also be sure to verify that they’re synched properly, they sell a special synchro tool for the webers
Being that it’s a small engine and those are huge carbs, I’d check your jets to see how much smaller you’ll have to go. It sounds like it’s running way too fat, which would contribute significantly to the issue you’re having.
Triple check your base timing and your timing at full advance to verify the springs and weights inside the distributor are correct for your setup.
If all of these are good, I’d move on to the deeper troubleshooting like your distributor being set properly, cams in the right place, ignition box sending proper voltage, etc. I’m sure it’s something simple that you’ll be able to remedy without too much hassle. Enjoying all the content with this car, can’t wait to watch you have fun with it!
I agree looked super rich!
I would agree!
This guy carbs for sure.
iirc? The accelerator pump has a significant effect on how much bogging there is when stabbing the throttle. Of course, correct jetting first before messing with it.
+1 from an old school carb guy.
Honestly this is one of my favorite builds you’ve done, just for the fact it’s very different and very simple compared to your other builds! I love the other builds also but this one is just great in its own way
He needed the break from the overly tedious to just regular tedious.
It’s been fun to do a car that doesn’t have to perform perfectly and do something super well. Squeezing every ounce out of it. Just something for fun and pure smiles. Nice change of pace for sure.
Best part is it’s an actually obtainable build for normal people not able to spend 10s of thousands of dollars on a build.
Jimmy and Taylor building 86’s at the same time is so bomb!
Taylor building and 86 jimmy building a Honda 😂
The only way I keep the videos straight between the two of them is what side the ITBs are on 😂
I feel like so many people now so used to just throwing it away and buying another one, when in fact a lot of times rebuilding/remaning like you did is just as good and supports a skilled tradesman! That is a dying breed right there man, shame.
Every time i eat, i watch Ur videos. Just wanted to say thanks for being urself and love all ur projects hope you have a great 2023
Neighbors like, "had to be a RUclipsr" 🤣🤣 love the fact of having different cars for different experience!
I enjoy your jibber jabber because you explain things to us. I learn when you jibber jabber
I love that both you and Jimmy are doing 86s at the same time, 2 totally different approaches, very fun to watch the differences. Keep it up taylor!
Your starter/alternator rebuild guy as soon as you said he was in a wheelchair I knew who you were talking about
you need a synchronizer tool to sync the vacuum on those 48s. Check the jetting it has as well. The bogging is the MSD box. 4AGE on webers with MSD like around 15 degrees of timing then you need to set your timing curve. Looks like you have a digital box with built in timing curve. once it hits 3000rpm it should put your overall timing at 30 degrees. Make sure you have your box set to 4 cylinder and make sure you dont have rev limit set too low on MSD box. If you have any questions feel free to message me. I have been running DCOE on my 16v for a long time.
If they’re 48s that’s way too big for a 1600cc, best to swap out for 40s
Good Info, but the msd box he has doesn’t have a timing curve at all
I absolutely love this car. The old school technology is something I really love on this car. Keep it up as always Taylor
This I'd why I love watching t-rays videos
After watching trotl montages all day today I’m sooo happy you don’t replay the same music over or time lapse over and over again 😊
So many Keyboard Tuners in here. Pretty sure Taylor knows what he's doing. Lighten Up Nerds.
The first startup that thing sound good and smooth, looked too easy😭
You should do a Short where you visit and give a quick tour of the alternator/starter repair place.
Carbs are a different ball game. Need to sync the carbs, adjust lean best idle and probably rejet the carbs to that engine combo. ... lots of carb experiance on these old VW's and running dual webers on most setups. You'll get it man!
Rule #1 with carbs, get your ignition timing right, then adjust the carbs
It's been said by others, but this is by far my favourite build on the channel. The carbs, the 4AG, the pop-up headlights, big smile energy all around!
Super simple. It’s your dash clock. You fix that dash clock to the correct time and and it will run super smooth
Your car isn’t revving past a certain rpm because you have no ignition advance anymore. Its just locked at base timing. You need to get a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor or program a timing ramp into the msd box (if that’s even something you can do)
you can run the stock ignition with no advance but you have to set it at the max timing you want i ran mine for years like that and it was fine taylor would need to get a msd 6 al-2 programable ignition box and write a timing curve in it
This
It is something that can be done on the msd 6530 but not the normal 6aL he has
Yep. I had the same setup 6al is trash you need the 6al2 like I bought and program it. Or use 4k dizzy with vacuum advance
@@user-kc8ps4jt4c it’s not trash it’s just not the right tool for this application haha. They work fine on a dizzy with an advance mechanism
"support local". Good remark.
You can do a lot better with the fuel lines to the carbs. They sell banjo fittings so you only need to run one fuel line. Great work. 👍
Sidedrafts on a four cylinder is one of the coolest sounds ever.
Pro wiring tip:
A seam ripper (a tool used by a seamstress to tear apart clothes) is excellent for cutting wiring harness loom. The design makes it very, very hard to damage the wire underneath. Just find the seam and rip away. Like a letter opener for electrical tape.
Don’t forget coolant has a higher boiling point then straight water.
Love this build. Thanks for the videos.
distilled water is significantly better at heat transferring meaning it'll take much longer to heat soak the cooling system. while anti-freeze has a higher boiling point it tends to hold onto that heat causing higher cooling temps overall. both have their advantages and disadvantages. location, use, how hard you're going to run the engine, cooling capacity, etc all play a part in whats the better choice and if you don't know then just play it safe and run 50/50.
@@sirmonkey1985 The biggest difference is that he plans to drift this car most likely at drift tracks. Tracks won't let people run antifreeze in their cars because it's a pain in the ass to clean up if it does spill. Most tracks require 100% pure water only in the cooling system in all cars for any kind of competition event.
With a proper regulator you can use stock fuelpump with carbs.
Yes you can but it puts a lot af strain on the pump
Yeah I’m hindsight I should have done that. But the fuel lines on the car were already mangled so it needed to be re worked anyway.
@@xandrae4205 I dont thing so. A turbo style regulator and return line is way to go.
ITB 2zz would be sweet in this thing
Dang Taylor with the doors open?? Must be another beautiful day in florida
The first start sounds so rich.
Seam rippers work great for cutting tape / loom and the ball end of it ensures you wont slice open any wires
@Greg Jenko For sure. I used to slide (very pointy) flush cut pliers to split looms open, specifically on Peterbilt harnesses, which are wrapped in what I call hockey tape. Very tough tape. I was inches from a spot in the wire that was shorting to ground, ended up "nicking" the wire with those pliers, and had to add a new section of wire to repair the already open spot of the wire, plus the section that I compromised. Never again!!
Those carbies are going to need mad turning man, I just watched Benny's Custom Works doing the same thing .. he found a bloke to help and the information he had was insane
This 3 part series turned me away from swapping my miata, and instead about to order a quad carb setup for it. Always enjoyed the simplicity and driver experience of the car, and feel like this would pair perfectly with that.
I really hope you mean Individual Throttle Bodies.
@@dohc_vtec_dj no, I don’t.
All the guys I know with vintage carbed cars use an injection pump with a return line and a pressure regulator just before the carbs. That way they don't have fuel sitting in the line getting hot and messing up the AFR.
Back in the early 80’s my buddy picked up a first generation Celica Supra and I was obsessed them for years. Then interest’s changed and I went after American muscle now you got me thinking back on them. Thanks for the video and looking forward to seeing the next one.
the sounds this engine is putting out reminds me of my old 4 cylinder motor cycle engines that had the carbs out of sync or only firing on three cylinders this is why you have all of the smoke and i mean all of it
This might be your coolest build yet, I really hope you do come back to it and do a full tear down and rebuild restoration with paint and everything (I know aesthetics are not your priority)!!
Best car in the fleet. Love it.
This would be a cool build for Taylor to do as a showy kinda driver build....tucked clean bay, nice paint/wrap, clean interior.....just a good running car for spirited drives and cars n coffee....just to enjoy.
When doing harness work like that buy a seam ripper like for sewing. Works awesome for cutting the tape and not worrying about cutting the harness. Use them all the time on harness with the mesh and they work awesome
I haven't had to work on or adjust a carburetor or points ignition system since the early 90s . And I don't miss it , not one little tiny bit .
Jet seems clogged in one of the webbers cause the splatter but also seems rich in the other webber. The beauty of carbs
I love everything about this car. More fun driving a slow car fast.
Definitely one of my favourite interiors
Ya Taylor ray saved the day with a video!!
First Jimmy O now yours. Gonna call this 86 Monday
Loving the old school content
You should look at 123 distributors as they allow different throttle curves and advances on these old school builds - I run one on my fast road mgb and love it
Don’t think they do one for the 4ag as there’s no advance mech at all. Need to swap to a 4K dizzy, or get an msd programmable
Messed with webers alot in my teens, there is alot to getting 100% out of them and some of it is counter intuitive when you are presented with symptoms that are not necessarily caused by your first thought. On the plus side though there is alot of good books written on the subject but the real knowledge gold is if you can get some one to run you through it hands on, it will save you so much time in the trouble shoot phase and flatten the learning curve very quickly .
Taylor, it seems to me that the problem is when you go from the idle circuit onto the main circuit. It might be that the main circuit is too lean or completely blocked. Time to call Kevin for a chat. The 48 DCOE's seem too large to me, but If they've been fitted with the correct chokes and venturis, they will work. The fact they've been on an AG engine before is good. I've used 45DCOE's on a 1.6 litre motor, but that was a full race motor. Time to call Kevin for a chat. Personally, I would have hit up Duetsche work for a low pressure in-tank pump, & used bango fittings on the carbs, with a Tee style piece in the middle. This would have meant only one fuel hose, instead of two.As usual, this is just my opinion, I'm sure you'll get a handle on it.
Central Florida reman is who my grandpas been using since I was a baby and now I’ve been using them for last 8-9 years . 60 bucks for alternator or starter rebuilds usually, way better then spending 300 bucks for a reman Chinese pos 😂
You need to add the grill back into the front
It’s so funny seeing gts wiring and it’s mysteries 🤣 I’ve owned 9 ae86s myself over the years when they were cheap. That black one kinda looked like o2 sensor connector but I can’t be sure, over a decade since I worked on an ae86
14:40 is why I'm a toyota fan for life lol
Jimmy Oaks Vs Taylor’s AE86 BATTLE!
Let’s see it!
They both look like stanced garbage.. stancing these cars looks so trash they look broken
@@theduder9548 I disagree
I believe they are both modded period correct and appropriate.
You'll see us for the next for sure ! Already can't wait.
Great nostalgia build! Maybe we need a 944 build as well? Just for nostalgic purposes of course.
as a fellow corolla lover this is my fav build you have done. hope you will enjoy drivin these chassis as much as i do.
I watched all these downloaded and came back to give them a like. Keep up the great content man
Use a Seam ripper for taking apart harnesses! Lifesaver
Get a seam ripper for the wiring harness tape. Works wonders
don't know if someone already mentioned it, but in Sweden it's quite common to have a carbs and then you can fit a malpassi filter king which then lowers the fuel pressure and can be used with the original fuel system.
It's so cool watching two of my favorite RUclipsrs build cars with the same chassis, but both have completely different builds.
Just an FYI, Mallory (Holley) has a return-style fuel pressure regulator that will take EFI fuel pressure down to 3 psi for the Webers. I've used it with a Weber downdraft and it works mint.
6 psi is where you need to be, but remember, you now have massive air induction, and a good air balance could be the charm you need.
✌️😎
@@threeper yeah, you're right, years of playing with Holley based carbs, you tend to forget the weber pressures
Oh the memories and the feels coming back from this build. Reminds me of me n my pops in the garage building the show car (55' Chevy Bel Aire 2dr hardtop) and my first few. He nearly had a stroke when I took him to look at a 280z and an RX-7 but I'll never forget he said "shit son it still burns gas, needs the same 3 things air fuel and spark so if you want that 280 get it but that rotary is ALL YOU" 😂
Love that you were able to get the Weber’s on there like you originally wanted!
By far my favorite tuber hands down I’m honestly surprised this man don’t have more subs
Great content thanks for sharing. Looking forward to 2023 content
Someone nice thing about carburetors is once you get them dialed in they pretty much start no problem
hey make sure those valve stem seals are properly seated ...speaking from experience, I had a similar issue after replacing mine where it was still smoking, turned out it took quite a bit more force than I thought it would to get them seated properly. I was initally using a Toyotool, in the end I think I used a 3/8 deep socket ...that was 15 years ago and still good today :)
Hey Taylor, I've used a thread cutter from a sewing kit to cut open harnesses before with pretty good results without risk of cutting wires.
It's terrifying to me that these AE86's are almost 40yrs old, I bought a 86 twin cam Corolla hatch new when I was at university, it was a great little fwd hot hatch, swapped it out for a 89 Honda CRX early in 1990, damn I feel old, could have bought one in 99 for about $2 grand, bugger, Rj in Oz
I’ve always been amazed with Taylor’s knowledge. Just bought a Miata myself and I’m so clueless but watching these videos makes me believe that one day I might have some knowledge. Keep up the great work man
Love watching these types of videos.
Josue is the man!
Beautiful. Miss my 86.
Between you and Jimmy and Savage Geese, I'm really tempted to get an AE86 now.
+1 for the purity on this build. Very refreshing from the restomods. They are and cool and all but nothing like the experience of a car the way it's meant to be.
oh man! I have the biggest smile watching your video haha this is literally my dream car/setup so cool!
This build its going to be FIREEE
You need to check the cam timing and be confident that it's correct. First thing to do is balance the carbs, they are out of sync, once each Venturi is pulling the same airflow then set the idle mixture screws. There are lots of good Weber tuning material out there
Agreed they sound out of balance
Such a rad build, this is exactly what I'd do with an ae86.
I actually did v8 carb swap into Miata few years back and I just used the fuel pressure regulator and brought the psi down the 5psi for the carb setup and then returned the rest worked good
Really loving this build and love seeing you so enthusiastic about it Taylor
I'd make sure the correct fuel pressure is getting to the carbs first. Then you can adjust timing etc. Sounds great. Takes me back to my 20's :-)
I tried supporting my local alternator shop last year for my truck. They said we really only do big trucks and tractor stuff and we’d have to charge you hundreds to do a GM truck alternator so it would be cheaper to buy new 😂. So i bought new Oem from rock auto for like 150
I've been waiting on this, I bet its going to sound so good on those carbs
Nice start. You have to make sure the carburetors are synchronized. If not, the engine will not run properly! Regards Nico.
Love the build hopefully that pump holds up had them before usually last about 50 miles
I raced twin sidedrafts for 10 years. I found 4-6 lbs worked the best for me.
Good to know! So future me. Ended up putting the bike carbs back on for diag and it fixed the issue. So something with the carbs was causing it to fall on its face. I’m not sure what.
Another good secret is if you can’t find jets small enough you can Use flux and solder to fill old jets and jet reams to make your own jets if they’re not available.
Stumbles is normally rich. If you let off the peddle and it accelerates it’s lean. Sounds like your 4 secondary jets may be to big.
Build coming out clean
I have watched before, but this build got me to subscribe! Absolutely love this thing.
I found your channel yesterday and I'm hooked on this build.
Love this build. Makes me miss my AE86. Also you know you can manually open your headlight with that little red knob on the side of the headlight housing
Taylor I don’t know you know but you can get a straight through fitting for the top of the carb so the back carb fuel line goes straight into the top of the front carb and then out and down to the tank, so you then don’t need a line from each carb down into a t piece !
loving the 86 content
Time to go through those carbies.
What a cool build! I love the simplicity in builds like this.
Yelled loud as hell in my car when I saw that you posted made my shitty work day so much better
That sounds so good, Love it!!!
