    What a difference three years make. Yes, crows in general are intelligent, but in 2018 scientists discovered that New Caledonian crows don't just USE tools, they can CRAFT tools by combining two or more otherwise non-functional elements. As it stands today, this ability has only been observed in humans, great apes, and the New Caledonian crow.

      Just figured I'd add to this, it's not just the New Caledonian crow, many of the Corvidae family will craft and use tools, and they have the functioning ability in using the tools they create at a problem solving level above almost all other creatures. And to boot, they're actually better at remembering words and sounds than parrots, and can do regional accents and dialects. They're a criminally underated animal when it comes to intelligence, but a lot of it comes down to superstition during the Christianisation of Europe and Crows / Ravens being worshipped by Pagans.

      +Tony Hardman Yea they are incredibly intelligent animals. When I was younger on the street I lived on crows seemed to have some sort of meeting meeting every single day at 4:00 P.M. There were birds covering the entire street. It was the weirdest thing. I've seen them on a different street in my town in recent years doing that. I guess they decided to change location.

      Luculencia I guess they like that time. It's funny too considering how they are sometimes associated with death, and how in Japanese culture the number four is associated with it due to apparently simply being similar to their word for death, so four in Japan has a lot of superstitions connected to it, like we have for the number 13 in the West. Just a random fact to make it weirder. lol. I actually think it's really cool when animals meet up like that. I'm sure they have a lot of important things to discuss. More species should do that.

    I used to have several pet rats. They are very smart. They could recognize their names and would come when called. I only kept them in their cages when I was at work. Otherwise, they had free run of the place. One particular rat named Ozzy would sit on the dining room chair and watch me cook every day. He knew that some of what I was making was for their dinner. Usually just fruit and vegetables, fish, sometimes a baked sweet potato with little marshmallows. They loved that.

    Did you guys know that an octopus will use its tentacles to measure to width of a whole to see if it can squeeze through? The only thing the octopus cannot compress is the cartilage between its eyes, like the cartilage in our noses. It also figured that it could not take a crab out of a bottle, so it squeezed inside and ate the crab, digested it, and then left the bottle. Such a fascinating creature.

    You missed the greatest part about the mask and the crows. The crows actually doesnt seen this particular mask before. The man scared the mother of these crows. The experiment showed that crows can actually give information (like talking) to their kind about one certain human face. They dont have to see it. The crows showed the same scared reaction to the face like their mother. Plus the mother wasnt around at the time of the second experiment. That is a very detailed information for an animal. Incredible huge in my opinion.
    PS: In Berlin (and elsewhere too for sure) are crows who learned about the traffic lights. They wait for red for cars and fly to the waiting cars in front of the traffic light. The crow put a nut under the wheel and will fly on a higher position. It waits for green, cars driving, nut is open. But it is actually clever enough and wait again for red, even if no car is around. Only if it is save and the traffic light shows red, the crow comes back and claim their reward.
    PPS: Border Collies are pretty smart for dogs, but dogs in general are not very clever if you compare them with wild animals. wolves are in average as smart as the smartest dogs. so humans breed the intelligence out of them... But this is not a surprise, animals in the wild have to use their brain to survive, pets have to use their brain to get more fat. ;)

      Men see often technology as an end in itself; but even when it is a means we can doubt its efficiency in achieving the meaningful. For example let's say: "The only thing that counts is how we treat each other." But if greed is okay, if more control and power is okay, if grudge and revenge is okay, then technology, our type of intelligence is a success. Look at one major aspect of technology: language. Most of the time we use it for power or to establish that we are special.

      And I'd rather not shit on them, especially here, in their own comment section. They haven't wronged me in any way, so I feel like the reply I'm making right now is very disrespectful to them.

      I just don't like their vids. Low quality research, annoying voices, too long.. etc

    • @BradenBest
      @BradenBest 8 лет назад +1

      *****
      Umm, don't you look at the title, timestamp and uploader info before clicking? That's what I do, cause there are some channels that I outright refuse to give views (buzzfeed, for example), and other channels that I don't want associated with my suggestions, but am still curious to see, so I watch incognito.
      I feel really bad for what I'm about to suggest, but, if you really hate WM so much, what you can do is click on the video, pause immediately, dislike and leave. I hate to advocate doing something like this, but it's the only way I know of to make youtube stop suggesting videos from a given channel.
      As for your criticisms of WM's content, I don't see how their research is "low quality" when most of their lists are generated from opinion polls on their site, IMO their voices are fine and don't irritate me, and the video length is average at between 5 and 10 minutes, so I don't take issue with any of that. What I got sick of was the _subject matter_. A lot of the lists are really, well, _boring_. And at that, I can't really say why. I'd have to look at a list of their uploads to give examples.

    • @glibbergloop
      @glibbergloop 8 лет назад +1

      Your response was very good. I usually do avoid clicking but once in a while I slip up. And I also usually pause and leave immediately (usually with a dislike, but I rarely hit the dislike anyway).
      And yes, you worded it well... the video subject matter is so boring... that's kind of what I meant by low quality. They just seem to need to churn out videos without putting a whole lot of thought into making it interesting for bigger audiences. My kids like WM, and I let them surf RUclips on my account sometimes... that's probably why it keeps showing up in my thumbnails.
      Thanks for being calm, I was ranting and needed a good person to point it out. :)

    No word of a lie one of my border collies once got in a Royal Mail van and sat waiting for the postman. She loves the postman and vice versa but he's adamant that door was closed when he left it (would have to be I guess) and said when he came back and saw the passenger door wide open he thought he'd been robbed. Then got nearer and there she is happy as a pig in shit wiggling at him “Yeeeee it's you... I like you I do”
    Same dog can open and close doors, unlock gates, carry buckets and stuff for recycling or laundry etc but I didn't teach her how to bust into Royal Mail vans and sit patiently on the passenger seat.

    You forgot the jumping spider genus, Portia. It's considered the most intelligent arthropod. Because it retains some of the best depth perception in the world, as well as sight in general, they can measure distance as good if not better than we can. They also show an ability to adapt, improvise, and calculate their every movement and strikes that rivals many mammals. This genus of jumping spider has been observed to hunt with almost intellectual tactics, stalking their prey and looking for the best direction to strike according to their preys position

      You're so right, B-Prepper! They also show curiosity, a curious lack of fear, and they can "remember " prey hidden behind bigger objects. I love jumping spiders. They're fun! The biggest one I've ever seen was in one of my roses--black and white, and easily 1.5 inches big. With that help, who needs aphid spray??

    • @Rotsuoy
      @Rotsuoy 8 лет назад

      Absolutely right, both of you! Some subspecies of jumping spiders have even shown hunting traits similar to that of the wolf: younger, faster specimens wear down the prey while larger, older specimens use their body weight and bite strength to bring the tired prey down. Some live in family groups of the mother, father and many of the female children, and some even create small, pseudo-colonies. At this rate, jumping spiders are going to start building cities! X)

    It's not correct that crows are the only non-mammals to use tools. Of course there are other birds who do so. But even the honorably mentioned octopus who is a squishy mollusk does use tools,. It's even shown how it walks on the sea floor with it's coconut shells! And it can do a lot of other amazing things, like learning by watching, walking mazes, escaping from a tank and reckognizing individual people. The problem is that it's intelligence is so alien that it's hard to assess.

      this list was biased, in that it was made by humans. and humans like to consider primates the smartest species because they are so similar to us, and everyone knows humans are the most intelligent species on the planet. But yeah I was a bit shocked that octopus was on honorable mention. just look at how they camoflauge themselves... it is a conscious decision to change the color and even texture of their skin, and the exact position that they are in is all their intelligence

    TRUE STORY: So there was this dolphin, and the was a lot of trash in his tank. He was the smartest dolphin in the tank, so the zookeeper gave him a fish for every piece of trash the dolphin gave him. The dolphin kept giving the zookeeper tiny bits of trash for fish, so the zookeeper started wondering where the heck the dolphin got all that small trash. Turns out, the dolphin was tearing off tiny bits of trash off of a paper bag to get more fish rather than turning in one bag and getting only 1 fish.
