    Always loved The Levellers. It's a funny old world isn't it -- years later I discovered they were formed at the same Elephant Fayre in St Germans as we were. That was a special - absolutely lawless festival at a very special point in time - and our band has been together ever since. It was a life changing few days.

      Which remark got you so upset?

    • @abiezercoppe8886
      @abiezercoppe8886 7 лет назад

      imbecilik When he claims that anything he pays is folk music "because it was written by folk".

    • @mikejandrews
      @mikejandrews 7 лет назад

      Abiezer Coppe Well, how do you define "folk" music? Folk music, as it is known today, is the descendent of the traditional sound of Irish/British music. Music of the mass population, of the people (ie, "folk"), rather than of the higher classes (or "classical" music, as it is called today), but from a very specific musical tradition.
      "Folk", as a term to describe music, has become rather restrictive (or prescriptive), but taking the real basic meaning of the original term, jazz, blues, rock and roll, and punk are all variants of the "folk" music tradition. They are all music of the common people. And each national culture around the world has it's own musical heritage, which can be accurately described as "folk"...

    • @abiezercoppe8886
      @abiezercoppe8886 7 лет назад

      imbecilik Sorry to be curt on this, but, seriously, to get an answer, read a book on folk music. One of Bert Lloyd's books on English folk music would be a good start. There are plenty of others too.
      We could argue the toss here, but the point is that these folk traditions do exist and can be recognised. As Bert himself once commented (and I paraphrase), the edges of the definition of folk music may be blurred and grey, but like the border between night and day they do exist and can be recognised.
      Folk musicians and folk music is under constant pressure from mainstream pop and commercial "culture", pressure to conform and not do our own thing, pressure to be "like everyone else", stop being so weird, turn up the beat and the drums etc etc., be this that or the other ... I don't apologise for being defensive when people openly dismiss my musical traditions.

    • @mikejandrews
      @mikejandrews 7 лет назад +2

      Abiezer Coppe Nobody dismissed anything. This is the Levellers, who openly present the British folk music traditions that influenced them.
      Although, you did seem to dismiss my comment and point of view. Folk music traditions are not owned by one group of people, playing one type of music. Music is an organic beast, and evolves with the social situation. The defining point is that its origins are with the common *people*. Unless you can accept that, then you clearly don't understand folk traditions as well as you think you do.
