The first mayor I really got to watch on television. He became mayor when I was 14 years old. Seeing Mr. Dinkins a Black man was a great inspiration to me as a kid growing up in East NY Brooklyn. He was such a man of great dignity and class. He will be missed. One of the great mayors of New York. I always wanted him to run again. One term was not enough. He did so much for N.Y. and doesn't get the credit. He brought Mandela to NY in 1990 and was for unity of all all people. I will never forget he gave the summer youth program extra money in 1992 which allowed me as a teen to work more weeks. He created beacon schools which allowed students to have somewhere to engage in activities when the school day was over and not have to hang on the streets. My prayers and condolences. R.I.P. Mr. Dinkins.
@anthonyfrias5533 He had a lot of big issues in his one term as mayor. I think he needed more time to turn things around. But, he never got a second term. He was the mayor that hired thousands of police to fight crime, which Giuliani benefitted from when he became mayor and was able to get the credit as the mayor that was hard on crime. Dinkins is also the mayor that started beacon schools in NYC, which kept schools open for kids after 3 pm until 8 pm or so. Which, gave kids a place to be instead of on the streets while parents were at work.. Dinkins also had libraries open more days of the week and ,he extended summer youth employment in NYC for teens to work longer periods in the summer. I benefitted from all these things. He did a lot to only have had 4 years as mayor. But, crime and racially incidents in the city became a issue for him. Keep in mind I was age 14 to 18 when he was mayor, but I still remember Dinkins as being a descent man and mayor whenever he spoke on TV. I learned a lot more about him as I got older. He really doesn't get enough credit. It's really hard being the first Black at anything. If you don't do enough quickly, they will not give you a second chance.
@anthonyfrias5533 I learned about him over the years. He isn't one of the most popular mayors in nyc history. But, he was there. Thanks for letting me share a little of what I know. I appreciate it. 👍
Thank you, Cunytv75 for sharing this well Traveled, well Spoken, this HU Graduate, this intelligent Alpha Brother, 🤝🔥🔥🔥👏👏👑👑, great Documentary, Rest In Power King David Dinkins.
