Grandma that we never actually see is a greater villain than the ones in most action movies these days.
Darkspoon Crow Gamy was an evil person who apparently loved craft and witchcraft.
You ain't playin bruh
Technically, her ghost appears briefly after the funeral.
Raising a family just to be vessels for a demon. Can't top that kind of evil
Omg pure evil, drove her husband mad by making him starve himself to death (possibly something to do with Paimon who knows) tries forcing Paimon inside her own son and gaslighting him making him believe he was schizophrenic and causing his suicide all the while causing psychological damage to Annie then letting Paimon grudgingly live inside her own granddaughter only for her granddaughter to be beheaded so he could live inside her now parentless mentally broken traumatised grandson. The only kind of evil that could top that shit would be either Hitler or Dahmer
Finding a photo of a room of people looking at your family photo is beyond terrifying.
Isso foi realmente assustador
Same thing happened to me. Should I be scared? I also smashed my head against a desk for no reason.
@@tylerp3327.
@@tylerp3327a room filled with cultists? 😢
I've seen this movie three times and I completely missed that part
The part that scary was when I realized that the grandma had her family for a purpose. They were all just a means to an end. She felt no love for her daughter or son, who drove himself to suicide. They were all just part of a plan.
Yep. Imagine knowing that for a large majority of your life your mother stopped loving you as family and started using you for her own cult reasons.
Not only is it scary but also depressing as fuck.
Yup, thats the most terrifying part!
I think she wanted to bring paimon in her son's body first but he probably realised that and that's why killed himself
So many great details brought up in this comment section.
I love this movie so much, so ambitious for a debut film.
I love the shot after Annie sees the doormat, and the security camera blinks red. kinda signifies her whole family has been under surveillance the entire time.
Yes
Never noticed that and I’ve seen the movie 5 times. Genius
I knew it meant something that the shot lingered on the blinking camera but wasn't sure what, thanks!
Omg just noticed it
Where exactly is this camera. I can't find it
Holy shit, I never noticed until now that Joan was screaming for Peter to "get out" not as in, "get out of this place before you get hurt," but more as in "get out of the body meant for Paimon." God this movie is genius!
I just realised this too.
Kind of gave it away when she said 'peter!!! I expel you' but ok lol
Kira1Lawliet but Joan is part of the cult... of course she wouldn’t be bothered about Peter not being hurt
Another Woman did it to Charlie to
You are an idiot
"Peter, I expel you!"
Peter: "Is that the principal...?"
Lmao!! This was great! He smoked some pot again with his boys and was like “wait what? Is that how they tell you?
Lmfao i smoked that gas station weed and now I'm seeing this fat woman yelling and chanting spells at me from across the street 😂😂@@JoeMama-yd1ve
Hahaaha so funny. We all cried ov laught. You are great. Amazing
this is the scene that fills me with the most dread. The way Annie reacts in utter fear to finding out the truth about Joan in connection with her mother juxtaposed with the twisted photos of the cult members grinning gives me chills
Oh hell yeah. That picture of the gran smiling in that dress with the music and Annie's reaction. Just sheer nightmare fuel.
The anxiety and dreadfulness that Ari Aster designs his films with is so much better than any jump scare could ever be
I feel like people don't talk about this scene/sequence enough. Seeing it dawn on Annie in real time that her mother was a lot more sinister than she could have ever imagined is just chilling to watch.
The way Joan’s tone changes at 1:20 when she screams “Get Out” is chilling
Yeah so was the prolonged "peteeeeeeeer" the third time she called out his name. 0:50
Notice how at 2:20, the book says that Paimon will possess the most vulnerable host? Makes sense that it would go after Annie and Peter, considering how vulnerable and broken they were throughout the movie.
The entire climax of the movie was the cult trying to make Peter as vulnerable as possible. The sheer horror of what he witnesses was meant to grind him into dust emotionally. Paimon and the cult were always going to go after Peter in the end, even if he proved more stoic, harder to crack. He's a healthy, young male host. The rest were just steps to ensure his vulnerability.
@@duarte2 God it's so fucked up
@@duarte2 And it absolutely sucks that they win in the end. Peter looks and sees his mom sawing his head off and then he looks over and sees a group of naked people just smiling at him. And that was it. Peter was done. Jumps out the window ending his life (at least I'm sure he did) allowing paimon to take over. The cult got what they wanted, Peter's emotions took over and he gave up and made himself completely vulnerable.
Spoiler:
Actually, the most vulnerable host was Charlie.. Charlie hosted Paimon's body the whole time she was alive.. that is why earlier in the movie Annie said the grandmother dug her claws/hooks into Charlie indicating the cult possibly performed a ritual on Charlie and used her body as a temporary host for Paimon..
@ 2:25 the book reads that Paimon is male and should take up a male human body, which is why he possesses Peter's body at the end..
Her mother married paimaon and she became his queen. She promised her children would be one of his hosts.
I never trusted Joan
She was to kind and to curious about Annie's life ...
EdjeMr1975 and she is Aunt Lydia haha
Careful with the nice one's because the devil plays it nice
3:19 to 3:27 always straight up Fucks me up. I think the greed and contentment in her mother's eyes and the tone of the music track, instigates a sort of evilesque vibe to it. I don't know, but tell me I'm not alone here.
you arent alone, this movie is beyond scary
I felt so many chills during that part in the movie. It’s so fucking evil
Doc P
Oh definitely. That image is kind of like the climax for Ellen’s posthumous character “arc”. We FINALLY understand the whole story of her wickedness that’s haunted Annie’s family before she was even born. And we realize it along with Annie in her horror and disbelief. Then there’s Ellen in that photo, looking deranged and so proud to be marrying the entity that lives inside her 12 year old granddaughter, and will mercilessly kill all of her daughter’s family until its inside her teenage grandson. (Of course, after she failed to put it inside her own teenage son). So chilling.
Exactly what I was thinking, for me it was the most disturbing part of the movie
Idk why but those pictures of her really stuck with me
The music makes it so scary and disturbing
That's why out of all the scenes in this movie this scene gave me the most Goosebumps
Jeff This and the scene when Annie screams over Charlie’s death. I get chills just thinking about it.
The soundtrack of this film is so brilliant and effective. It's really grown on me and become a favorite when I need to generate creepy creative vibes. So inspiring.
I love the soundtrack to this movie. The song at the very end as Peter/Paimon is climbing into the treehouse, that music is fantastic. Someone described it best on the video itself for that song, that it's basically like "a blissful, peaceful sunrise in Hell" or something to that effect.
@@voteZDLR Ari said that the musician plays the sax & apparently the score is pretty much all distorted saxophone. Who knew saxophone could sound so upsetting.
I lowkey love how normal, fun and even respectable the satanists (paimonists?) look. A lesser movie would've made them all inbred and deformed or something but in this movie, they just look like your next door neighbors in suburbia.
Data from Rosemary's baby
Yup that's a cult for ya. They have to appear completely harmless at first glance, remember a cult is only dangerous if you take their bate like a blind fish.
that makes it much much scarier
No idea is original. I have been saying the same thing after i watched this. It makes it more terrifying that these people look like your everyday town folk. The grandmother looks like my mom... A lesser film would of had them dressed in all black and spooky looking. These people look just normal. There are people in real life who are like this by the way. You would never know@@pabloarambula4627
What’s really scary is the fact that these cults probably do exist.

@@joeim12 Omg all movies you said are my top horror movie favorites lol
Joan has very big role in destroying her family.she carried her mentor...Peter's grandmother's legacy
radolf p Ellen seemed to really believe in the cause, guess it seems as though the only reason as to why she ever wanted children, to bring forth Paimon. Though I feel that one way or another she may have cared for Annie hence the beginning of the letter to Annie, but that could be the DID or maybe herself idk. But overall, grandma was one seriously evil woman.
it's hereditary for sure🔥
@@iam_the_obiwan_ginmex8028 yeah allowing your son Charles to be possessed what would of happened if that was successful? Would Annie still lose her head or worse
2:20 there are 3 beads on his camel, while Charlie the grandmother and annie all lost there heads. So freaky but a great detail!
I noticed that too
And than... what tf is he doing with these heads?
@@ScharfeSalami That's private stuff, Peter. Leave little Paimon alone.
Also in the book it says, “a new ritual is required”.
So the ritual to bring Paimon back to human form was having three decapitated heads from three generations of women (Charlie, Ellen, and then Annie).
When I rewatch, it's so obvious that Joan is lying that it's painful; she's talking to Annie in a rehearsed manner. I also like how she says the spell with amateurish pronunciation; it emphasizes how the cult members are "everyday people."
I don't it hurts the film even if it's obvious as viewers would still have zero clue why she would lie at that point as the movie is evolving I think ppl didn't know what kind of movie it was going to be
Something really unsettling about her flipping thorough the family photos. They look so real. The one of them gathered around the family portrait in a ritualistic manner? Creeeeeppppppy.
At 3:32 the family photo shows Steve, Annie and Charlie in a group hug while Peter is detached. I just noticed that this foreshadows the trio’s imminent deaths with Peter the last one standing, albeit possessed
I remember the feeling at the pit of my stomach as they do this entire sequence. It's masterful, especially when you realize she had the temptation to go through these things earlier in the movie but is only finally doing it now that it's too late. When she's looking at the photos though and then we see Joan, the "psychic friend" and you realize Joan was working evil against her the entire time... and then you see Queen Leigh herself, surrounded by her loyal devotees and being showered in gold, with regalia that would imply she is some Satanic high priestess/queen, whose death was the event that began the movie. It's very fortunate that Annie didn't let Queen Leigh have more access to Peter when he was younger otherwise she would have probably done the entire thing much sooner, and more importantly got to see the "fruits of her labors" which basically involves a literal Demon now living amongst us in Peter's body to do a lot of things for the people who brought him in, including make them rich and perhaps famous, incredibly wise (the secrets of the universe) and basically to give Hell even more influence on Earth. I am not a big fan of gore in horror films, the stuff that scares me is the stuff that makes you think.
I got shudders when you said ''incredibly wise''. God... I'd do anything to be given that gift. All the others are just background noise for me.... but wisdom, knowledge and intelligence... nothing beats any of those, imo.

This scene had me paralyzed in theaters. Something that also terrified me was that there were old pictures where they looked younger which means they knew each other for years
The moment I went “they’re finished” I knew nothing but terrible things were going to transpire. A beautifully and absolutely scary movie
This film is classic. You don’t see films like this much, this and Midsommar were absolutely dreadful
What an unforgettable movie 🎥 🍿 Ari Aster is a genius. That music.
Music too lifted this movie..
Yeah the music in both this and midsommar are fucking incredible. Dude is fhe BEST horror director.
Never have I experienced a horror movie in theaters like this one. The constant build of nothing but dread was absolutely amazing, as I went in blind & expected jumpscares & I expected Charlie to be the main focus of the film. This was probably the last time my expectations were sUbvERtEd in a GOOD way
I brought my best friend out with the same expectation and the car ride home was silent for 10 minutes until I worked up the ability to apologize for the trauma we just collectively endured. The inciting incident of this film had myself and the entire theater dead silent throughout the entire scene. No funny comments, no jokes, nothing. For 5 whole minutes.
The greatest thing about this scene is that if you take a look about what old scriptures says about Paimon, it is described that before his arrival trumpet sounds can be heard (and when the women starts to speak to him the soundtrack sounds like trumpet sounds), and before his arrival his roar can be heard which we can hear when she shouts "get out!". And right after the roar Peter looks towards a direction which is presumably northeast which is the direction that Paimon comes from. Creepy stuff
It's the northwest actually
This part hurt my soul. Seeing her look through her mom's albums. Talk about a panic attack.
The way she's knocking fast at the door foreshadows her banging her head on the door like that.
If only she had looked through her mother’s belongings before.. but she had been in denial about her mother’s true intentions for years and never wanted to find out the truth until it was too late.
3:20 honestly the scariest scene in the movie in my opinion
What is the grandma doing their?
Patrick Star she’s in some type of ritual
Yeah supposedly the grandma was trying to bargain with Paimon and become his “queen” in hell or something. The wedding dress signifies her passing and joining Paimon in hell. After her death that’s when all the stuff starts happening because the cult calls Paimon forth into the world after to signs themselves off to him in return for him offering them his powers
same
those pictures creep me out
Foi como se ela tivesse sido a escolhida pra ser a rainha de Paimon, mas ela teria que fazer sacrifícios, e então ela fez isso com a família dela, em um plano que levou anos pra ser concretizado
Can’t believe she didn’t connect the dots the FIRST time she saw the welcome mat . “ my mother makes mats just like that” . It was LITERALLY under her nose
That backwards moving shot revealing the pic of Peter had me fucking trembling watching this. I hadn't watched a horror movie in a long time because so much trash horror has been made, but this had me terrified and saddened the whole way through. The cult of Paimon reveal is brilliant, and the matriarchs insane plan to sacrifice her family makes the second viewing even better
I've always wondered what Peter looks at the moment after Joan shouts "Get out". I figured it was simply an inmate panic made him glance around for signs of a threat but the camera focuses on an entirely innocuous scene
I think in the script it says he’s looking around to see if anyone else hears what’s going on, which just makes it even more unsettling.
The majority of the town is in on the cult ritual. This explains why no one cared for Joan cursing Peter.
@@andrewwilliams1857
Incorrect
He notices the air moving next to him like during the seance.
Absolutely goated film. The music changing when Annie sees Joan and when she chokes up seeing her mother showered in riches and gold for being the conjurer of Paimon. Outstanding and beautiful.
The use of music in both Ari Aster films is nothing short of fantastic. This soundtrack is just perfect from beginning to end with the use of horns in this as we get closer and closer to the truth about Paimon, and I believe that this is in direct reference to the literature itself. People who actually practice summoning demons actually more or less all describe the entity Paimon the same way, it's really eery actually whether it's all just because it's a pre-conceived notion and their subconscious is playing tricks on them or if they're actually making contact, I don't know and don't want to know, but the other thing they say about Paimon in particular is if he does appear it will be very, VERY loud. He'll come with his entire army, "200 legions of demons" riding on a camel's back, with an entourage as well including a marching band of sorts with large, blaring horns, to ensure that he commands respect wherever he goes.
That treehouse song is terrifying yet triumphant
Colin Stetson is amazing at making uncanny music
So the very final shot of this clip at 3:35 is the Grandma doing some sort of secret ritual on the rest of the family, using the picture- that maybe she (the Grandma) took? Creepy
Imagine someone yelling at you from a distance…unsettling
You feel so bad for this family man :(
My family are fucked up but this makes them look like something out of a Disney movie lol
The best part of this twist is how it ties together all the scenes that felt pointless or unnecessary. They'd secretly been showing us the ingress of a cult of satanists the whole time, but they were all just friendly townsfolk and extras up till now. What a great movie. HAIL PAIMON!
HAIL PAIMON!
inferno0020

@@jofo817 well the demon is mentioned hundreds of years ago. So if you think god, jesus, devil are all real. Then, yes that demon is real.
Lol you don't hail paimon silly.... he ain't too much of a big thing in hell. All blessings from Brazil.
@@alvaroaugustochagassimeao1940 its all pure surmise of course but from what I've read I'd count him as a pretty big wheel down there.
He's said to be particularly loyal to Satan among the fallen. And he commands 200 legions of demons which is a much high number than most of the demons.
He never got the celebrity that D&D and other popculture diversions brought to better known demons but his resume is strong and as far as what gifts the demons can bestow upon their summoners you can mostly do worse.
Cheers from Ohio USA
I found a comparison between how Annie is knocking on Joans door, with how she was knocking her head on the attic door later in the film, almost a foreboding foreshadow if you will. This movie continues to amaze me. Ari Aster is one of the greats!
What really bothers me is the fact that nobody except Peter can hear Joan shouting

Yeah same. It's a small thing, but I feel like a random Karen looking lady shouting ominous words in front of a high school in broad daylight would more than likely attract attention 😂
@@benfox1588 There's implications throughout the movie that the students may be in on it as well. Whether they are or not I don't know, but it also wouldn't be difficult to chalk it up to supernatural fuckery.
They need to do a prequel movie about the gran and the cult I'd love to see how it all came together
I would want to see a prequel going back to ancient times with this demon, maybe its origin in Israel or something.
Would be great if done right, but its not Aris style. Standalone films are more powerful in a way.
This is about that time in the movie when you say "Ah shit..."
The tragedy of this movie is the lack of recognition by the Academy. Toni Collette gave the performance of a lifetime, Ann Dowd as Joan could stand with any actress for the best supporting role and think of the nuances and detail in this movie; how could Ari Aster not get consideration for best writer and/or director? Don't forget the orgy right afterwards.
0:19 I knew that Joan casted the spell, but didn't realize that thing on Joan's table was the altar create by Charlie-King Paimon (parallel to the altar in the ending with severed heads) when i watched it in the first time

Something I find really horrifying in this scene is the fact that the cult members look like regular people, they aren’t the robe wearing lunatics that you’d imagine.
Well duh, real monsters like serial killers look normal as they are of the same species as us "normal ones". Ted Bundy was even handsome.
