I reacted to Dark Star from the Grateful Dead a while ago. This live performance is apparently little better and includes what is called, “The Beautiful Jam”

Here we go Perk! Heck yeah!!! There is always a different version and we will listen to them all. Its the Grateful Dead.
Hey Nordy, how the hell are ya?
@@bobschenkel7921 Hey Bob! Im doing great after that Beautiful Jam in Dark Star. I assume your the same! That one rips!
love how the GD family keeps feeding you! we are relentless to create new members of the GD for life fam. welcome home brother. ILL GET UP AND FLY AWAY!!!
Way into the deep end of the pool, thanks Jonah. In the late 80' and until the end in '95 there was an unofficial group that met during shows called The Wharf Rats, made up of Dead Heads who had decided to got to the shows "sober", kind of an AA for Dead Heads, I was NOT a member. LOL. Excellent choice, really enjoyed it.
The phellowship and the Jellyfish are a couple other sober fan groups too. They meet/ greet before the show and host a meeting at set break.
The more you listen to the GD the more songs become your favorites. Ultimately it is all about the vibe and feeling the music encompass you with an undeniable sense of being.
I was about to donate and suggest this exact same one. Ha! This the first performance of Wharf Rat and when it transitions back into Dark Star is where the Beautiful Jam is. I saw an interview with Phil Lesh and they played the Beautiful Jam for him. He said he hadn't heard it for years and it brought tears to his eyes.
Love the Beautiful Jam!
Wharf Rat is my absolute favorite and I’m glad you enjoyed it. Sober and recovering Deadheads call themselves Wharf Rats. ❤️
Oh man, thank you again for doing these reactions. I said it before but watching you explore Grateful Dead has been an exceptional thing.
Who else laughed when he said "I don't think it's hit yet"?
And it had definitely hit! You can hear it in Jerry’s voice. Lol😂
Jerry Garcia was singing.
That was Jerry and that was the Beautiful Jam!
Didn't even notice the arm since I was dancing around.....lol
Wharf Rat had the ability to take you away. Not the only GD song that could but this one could.
Not sure if you’ve heard the Dark Star off of Live/Dead but it’s the definitive version
This was the first time wharf rat was played also
This was a bustout show for sure. Not only the first "Wharf Rat", but also the first "Bertha", the first "Greatest Story Ever Told", the first "Loser" and the first "Playin' In The Band". WOW!!! Also it was Mickey Hart's last show until 10/20/74, due to some financial considerations, like his Dad ripping the band off for $700,000. Oops.
Beautiful jam is, ummm...beautiful. Recording and, frankly, performance given how jammy the beginning of Dark Star transpires. Then Wharf Rat, performed I've been told for the first time here. Slightly different than the version that showed up from shows recorded a couple of months later. Then...the essence of the jam. Garcia, in particular, really, really shines but the whole band is so tuned into where he's going. Some real rock history here.
to my ear at least the dark star portion of this song isn’t actually that good, probably because its the first time that they played it in 3 months.
this is the first time they preformed wharf rat live and it definitely sounds like it lol, still good regardless.
this is also mickeys last show until 1974!
now i’d recommend the dark star -> morning dew from 9/21/72! it’s pretty long but totally worth it, it also has a pretty unique jam towards the end of the dark star, and the morning dew is a morning dew so it’s great!
here’s a link to it! : m.ruclips.net/video/vVDAiFAOrgE/видео.html
"Gray Folded" is a 2 CD compilation put together from pieces all of the Dark Star performances. An ultimate Dark Star experience. Wharf Rat is a GD classic.
Dark Star-> Nutella-> Wharf Rat-> Nash Evans-> Dark Star
@Perk’s reCAP you relisten to some songs, I suggest you listen to the lyrics of Wharf Rat, it is one of many Dead songs that people related to, the poor vibe, the traveling vibe, the outlaw vibe, the working man vibe, etc., came from their lyrics and mixed in with their flowing musical vibe is what hooked millions of us.
2/18/71, Capital Theater, Port Chester, NY. Here’s Phil Lesh’s reaction to it a quarter century later ruclips.net/video/7hzZc8-s4So/видео.html
Wharf Rat. part of the Down and Out Dead Collection
Is this Tom Constanten on keys, anyone know?
Per Dead Base Tom Constantin's final show with The Dead was 1/30/70 at The Warehouse in New Orleans, La. so that was still Pigpen on the keys at The Capitol Theater.
@@bobschenkel7921 thanks, Bob! I thought it sounded like TC in the very beginning, but I realized it wasn't him before Wharf Rat started.
Love the old shows with TC, he added another dimension to the groove.✌🎶
@@lisarainbow9703 Yeah Lisa, he's a great dude. I met and talked with him for about ten minutes when he played a solo gig at a small club in my hometown, Bethlehem, Pa., on 11/24/93. Even got his autograph on a classical CD I got from him, and hung the cover, with the autograph, on my wall. A good night. Good ol' TC, he's the best.
@@bobschenkel7921 fantastic that you got to meet him!! I saw him do a solo set, before playing with Terrapin Flyer, just outside of Chicago--- I think it was mid-90's.. Hearing Dark Star done as a solo piano piece was inspiring. Didnt meet him, but his wife sat with us, and she was wonderful.
@@bobschenkel7921 You're from Bethlehem? Drove through there yesterday morning (through the cold rain and snow) on my way home from Ithaca. 😀
Each Dark Star very different from others--which choices of up tp 5-10 different movements.
A very early version of Whart Rat... much more polished in later years
