michael is probably the smartest contestant in the show’s history. his strategies genuinely changed the show forever.
I am pretty sure he had no service mistakes. If someone can find one then mention the episode and time.
(Yes in ep 1 he did run out of lobster pasta, but chef never complained on times or anything. He just listened and didn't argue and made fresh without Ramsay complaining. So I don't really count it as his mistake.)
@@milanek1527I believe so but maybe he did! At least you didn’t go to way of Will and lose!
HELLO??? ANOTHER SOPHISTICATED DOGE???
@@ThatSophisticatedDoge What?
@@lastdayonearthmysteryman48498 Nothing, I came across someone else with a similar profile picture as I
I know it’s season 1 so the bar was set super low but I still think he deserves to be a winner. He really is the poster boy of “don’t judge a book by its cover”. He actually was so sneaky during the finale that it impressed Ramsey to make it a staple of the show later! Now that is pretty impressive!
i mean, he won... so... yeah?
I can’t imagine how horrible it must have been for him to have his daughter die and then get divorced, be homeless, and everything else. For him to overcome all that, remarry, and have a son makes him the poster child for resilience to me.
*I can’t imagine how horrible it must have been for him to have his daughter die*
say WAT
@@NGRosaleswhat are you not understanding
@@NGRosaleshis daughter died 8-10 minutes after birth. He got into drugs afterwards, denied ramseys offer to work in London with him due to his drugs, and kind of fell off afterwards. He’s since opened a food truck to help people and is a big part of a recovery program I believe. Drugs definitely aged the shit out of him for him only being 33, he looks like he’s 55
@@mctoasty420 What? He's like 45 or 46
@@mctoasty420 he was 27 when he won HK, and that was almost 20 years ago
9:07 Chris's slow head turn always gets me lololol he's so pissed
Chis is like you jackass!
One of the most iconic and important contestants in HK history. It’s just a shame that Michael’s dream with Ramsey didn’t go quite to plan after HK and he ended up going through such a dark period battling addiction and stuff. At least he’s now recovering and working as a chef again and is running his own business.
Yes that is sad but at least he redemption!
I can never see the clip at 9:06 without laughing my ass off. That's the head turn of ultimate betrayal 😂
When I think of Michael I have an image of a very quiet guy who suddenly started talking about himself in third person and talked to billboard of Ramsey. Truly an iconic contestant of HK
Ralph played the game the way it was intended. Michael took full advantage of all the exploits that were present.
Yes!
Ralph was playing "by the book" while Michael was thinking outside the box
@@margarethmichelina5146 Yes Michael was thinking at outside the box! I mean he broke HK so it could be become an phenomenon!
You should read "Playing to Win" by Sirlin.
@@snex000 What It About?
What’s wild is that, on any recent season, half the stuff Michael did on this first season would get him a villain edit. This includes putting a major threat in Chris in the bottom over Jimmy, knowing Ramsay would snipe Chris out, and sabotaging Ralph’s risotto during the finale service. Ramsay straight-up implemented that in future seasons! I’m not sure if that’s a testament to how much Ramsay loved Michael and viewed him as a strategic genius and the perfect head chef at the time, the show just finding its footing on its first season, or some combination of all of the above.
Michael is truly a genius. While everyone else is just going along the contest as normal, Michael is already scheming his devious plan from the get go. He might not survive today's HK landscape but he is sure way ahead of the competition before.
He created the pass sabotage test
9:03 The way Chris slowly turns his head towards Michael, LMAO😂
Michael is the only contestant who was never eligible for nomination during the team phase
That is very interesting!
HK's inaugural season was more of a strategy game than an actual competition show. But thanks to Michael Wray and his villainous tactics, this show has change the game and pushed the boundaries even further in the seasons following.
the way chris turns his head slowly when nominated, was PERFECT!!😂😂
The cadence that you speak in drives me crazy.
Didnt notice until i read this comment
I was so excited to see you do this video! Truly the best and based Hell's Kitchen content
I still think "Non Winners Who Got the Last Laugh" would make an interesting video. The ones who come to mind in that being:
Jason Santos (S7): Went on to be one of Jon Taffer's kitchen experts on Bar Rescue, and then came back to be the Blue Team sous chef since Season 19.
Jon Scallion (S11): Went on to work under Christina Wilson as part of Gordon's empire.
Brad Miller (S3): Went on to host Food Truck Nation.
Julia Williams (S3): Was awarded with being able to go to culinary school.
Declan Horgan (S19): Went on to achieve a Michelin Star.
Sterling Wright (S13): Need I really say more about a man who deserves the world?
If anyone else can think of any others who got the last laugh, please bring them up.
Add Chef Andy from Season 6, employer of Jay Santos and one of if not the most successful chef post Hell's Kitchen
Milly from S14/17 too! Gordon commended him TWICE and even invited him to stage at one of his restaurants at the end of S17
Declan didn’t actually get a Michelin star. He worked in a Michelin star restaurant.
@@matthewlabbe8395 Got noticed by a good place, that still counts as a last laugh.
Ralph, Virginia, Paula have a lot of restaurants and very succesful.
Ralph's Sous Chef, Royce becomes a contestant on Season 10.
LaTasha (winner of Season 13) worked under Paula before.
i got this idea for a challenge: You are blind-taste testing a dish and have to guess all ingredients and spices, afterwards the dish is revealed to you and you have to re-create it as best as possible with your chosen ingredients
I want to see the story of Heather (Season 2) and Rock (season 3), as the show's first 3 winners in the inaugural seasons who made HK what it is.
The first winner of HK is also one of the most unique.
I like this story video Flynn Master!
This was great! I'd love to see one about the legendary Christina Wilson.
Yes! That would be great to see especially to see Christina Wilson goes onto to be the red sou chef!
This is a good series but I believe his addiction started during the show but was hidden pretty good. It’s good that now he’s recovering and rebuilding his life.
those episodes of the last 6 were so heartbreaking backstab after backstab winning the chalenge only to lose in the service, may they be remembered
This is awesome!
Bro was playing survivor on hells kitchen
At 9:36 I loved how you mentioned big brother, love the show
Me Too!
All right I'm going to be hated for this opinion. I really do not like the fact that he is being vilified here.
But he played the game. And he played it very very well. That's why he won.
And honestly the fact that he was on drugs the entire time, honestly makes it even more amazing that even doped up all the hell he still managed to play the game that well.
He really is the Hannibal (the famous general not the silence of the lambs guy)!!!
HK in season one felt like an completely different show! Michael made it about gameplay!
This man changed everything
I have to applaud him for shaping the show into what it is today
i fully did not even notice or was bothered by your accent. enjoyed your commentary!
I hope we see all the winners
Chris got done DIRTY
If i remember right, Michael is the only HK contestant to vote his biggest competition and getaway from it
Yo Flynn, always loved your Videos(still do). But did you forgot to put the background song into this Video, or is this on purpose?
I hope you do one of these for Scott from season 12
The Michael Wray Law.
I would love to see Dave or Kevin form season six!
Michael broke HK but made it into an phenomenal series because he broke HK! My name is Michael so if nothing else I like him, for that fact alone!
Michael is my favorite hells kitchen chef of all time
This probably says more about me but I was rooting for Michael the entire way. Didn’t think anything of his antics just he deserved it more than the others.
Michael would be fantastic on Big Brother!!!
... Dude's a genius. Ngl. This guy is smart.
Michael Wray is the epitome of the person that appears stupid, but is actually a high-IQ genius within. 😎
It was cold hearted to do Elsie like that but as one of the final four I can see the point of her needing to be able to swim on her own od she wanted the job.
Michael Wray is the Sang-Woo of Hells Kitchen
It shocks me to this day why more people dont play like Michael.
Ramsay has gotten a lot better at deliberately catching sabotage. Hes not perfect at it but he will outright ignore nominations based on his own judgement if he thinks its necessary.
S1 was very experimental and honed with producer meddling in it. Half the chefs didn't even deserve to be there since they never had any professional cooking experience before. So that + the total meddling resulted in lack of iversight on the season.
So Michael with professional expereince + machavelian tactics + natural leadership ended up winning the thing by a mile. He wouldn't be so lucky if he was going up against other stronger compeititors in later season like the one armed bandit.
Because nowadays the same sabotages that Michael did would get you kicked out if you did them more than once. Sometimes even just the once.
You said Gordon had to change the rules for nominating after this season. Can someone explain that? It's been too long I can't remember how it was different
Basically you can't just nominate someone and expect them to be eliminated like that anymore.
Gordon will call out your bs if you try to nominate someone just for the sake of trying to eliminate them from the competition. He will even personally call put the weaker chef to step forward instead or just eliminate someone not nominated at all if they're just that bad (Raj for example).
Hey, you should consider changing your cadence a bit. It's a little affecting.
Michael is the real life version of Griffith
The commentator finishes the ending of his sentences higher in tone and its sooooo fucking annoying holy shit
Couldn’t make it past 25 seconds for this reason
#15 burger king foot lettuce
It’s the Food Wishes cadence
Thank you now I can't unhear that shit🙉
@@nickinskeep was genuinely interested in the videos but i cant listen to that shit😂
My favorite of season 1, honestly stronger than Heather the following season. Also what he went through after HK was deplorable.
Do one for Rock, Dave, or Alex.
Ariel wasn't a villain, Michael was.
What would happen if Ramsey eliminated Elsie instead of Chris in episode five? Would Chris pick up his game and win?
The Richard Hatch of Hell's Kitchen
Could explain the "Copyright Block" please??
he cant show that part because of copyright
obviously Raj is next /s
Obviously!
I love the vid but please stop ending phrases like the #15 burger king foot lettuce guy. It got pretty annoying very quickly.
The Richard Hatch of HK
Yes!
If it was the first season then how did he change the show if the never been aired before
What is Michael pouring on the floor?
❤
Heather for season 2 when?
Such a droney voice
why do you talk like that bro holy shit
Nice
The question is, whos the most infamous contestant ever?
Bro min maxed hells kitchen
The 3 villains that you can never hate: Robbie Rotten, Megamind, and Michael Wray.
Shooter McGavin
Pagan Min: Far Cry 4
Megatron
Hitler... Wait

Why don’t you review the Total Drama series, it’s similar to Survivor in some ways
Did Ralph choose beef?
You should give Elise credit for getting Jen out just like how you gave Michael credit for getting Chris out
Wtf? This video is about Mike. Lol
number 15 ahh voice
Michael Wray is still more likable then Ariel Moore!
do yourself a favor and google 'burger king foot lettuce'. you dont need to use that tone of voice when making a retrospective video, it comes across hollow, and uninterested, and if you're uninterested, why in the lords name would i be interested? yknow
That vid has 15mill views people love that short of shit. It's like ASMR what we find cringe and disgusting some people find relaxing I guess
Is he using a AI for his voice? Sounds so weird, I can't even finish the video
Your voice my god
This commentator has an annoying voice..
It's so annoying! The way he ends every sentence is infuriating
The final 2 syllables of every sentence being an Ab followed by G is really distracting... despite the content of this video being really interesting 😬
why do you talk like youre from cali LOL
cant listen to this video with the way this dude talks
Voice over is so cringe.
why do you elongate the last word of your sentances? disliked and wont watch another vid
Sunnyv2 wannabe
‘Foot lettuce’ voice
I literally cannot pass 3:18 due to the way you drop tone at the end of each sentence, I imagine this is wonderfully made but I cant listen to it… its very hard to listen to, please train cadence
Why is does this video is presented by the most anoying voice possible? A.I. ?
Why this dude talk like this
I have seen season one and it so boring because came off as a cooking version of Survivor!
Nice video but with your narration you dont need to leave every sentence fading out its super distracting sort of sounds like a teenager at high school with that lingering drawl. Sorry if that was too harsh lol meant to be constructive criticism
This guys voice is infuriating
You should listen to yourself speak because its actual torture.
The only thing worse than him is your voice. The fact that he won made me stop watching the show since apparently you don't need to be the best, Gordon will just randomly select a drug user as a winner.
He sounds like Sunnyv2 with less vocal fry😂
Most of the people making your food in professional restaurants and even most fast food places are drug addicts lol. If your chef isn't on some form of drug the food probably ain't gonna be good lmao
He didn't start abusing drugs until his eight month year old daughter died & shortly after his wife divorced him as is common when married couples loose a child
but yeah fuck that chem user am I right haha
@@apunishedmannamed2473 Well, it seems like he did start a little before the show, due to him being given opi*ates as painkillers for his back. He declined gordon's offer because he was scared of gordon finding out he was addicted. but you're also right, after his daughter died, man just went straight into the blackhole. i'm glad he's doing better now.
He and I follow each other on instagram I gotta say he's one of the nicest people ik
ikr, he's a pretty chill dude too.
