    Fun Fact: War and Peace was actually written as a prequel to a book that was never written. If you know Russian history, this actually becomes fairly obvious near the end. The actual book that Tolstoy wanted to write was on the return of the Decembrists. However, he felt that he needed to write a prologue to explain who the Decembrists were first. This then turned into a prologue of a prologue, then a prologue to that. In the end, Tolstoy ended up just writing about the Napoleonic war with a lot of foreshadowing about the Decembrists, but never actually mentioning them by name.
    I could explain some of the foreshadowing, but I don't want to blatant spoilers in this comment.

    • @aztre

      @@aztre
      You don't need to know who the Decembrists were to enjoy the book. They are never mentioned as they don't become a factor until a few years after the book's timeline ends. This is just a fun fact type of thing.

    I’ve read War and Peace when I was in 11th grade (in the original language, because I'm Russian yeah) and it was quite difficult, so I'm very proud of you❤️‍🔥. Tolstoy was a rather controversial person, especially because of the way he treated his own wife (for example, forced her to rewrite this entire text by hand several times), but if you abstract from his personality and concentrate on the text, this is really a profound work that I would recommend everyone to read at least once.
    p.s. he wrote so much text because in those days publishers paid for the number of pages 😄💸

    • @throneofpages
      @throneofpages  2 года назад +177

      why did tolstoy do his wife so dirty..... wow; but i agree! i 100% understand why it has stood the test of time and is such an important attribution to literature, the scope of this whole book is insaaane but the fact that he portrayed human life so perfectly is almost magic

But this has inspired me! It's also a beautiful book and if you love Pierre I'm pretty sure you'll love Levin. He's just a little farm boy who wants to fall in love and he's so pure. I remember trying to read it in school (I'm Russian) but I couldn't go further than 1st volume. The whole French dialog was driving me insane. But when we were studying it in class, we would go through it in sections and discuss it while we spend around a month to just get through it. So even students who didn't read the whole thing knew the characters and what the book was about. Also after senior year we have state exams where you also have to write an esse proving your point of view by giving examples from literature. And you can find everything in War and Peace, it is a go-to book for this esse. Love, family, war, friendship, betrayal and so on.
    I reread the whole book a year ago and loved it. I'm not a big fan of Tolstoy, but War and Peace is a masterpiece. Congratulations on getting through it!!! Great job!

      I too was scared of this book for more years than I care to admit but now I'm in the last book of this masterpiece its been an absolute joy to read and I truly regret not having treated myself to it sooner.... I'm sure you'll love it just a much as so many others have done over the years since it was written ..... Read it now, and let this wonderful work of literary genius work on your soul, you may not agree with everything Tolstoy proposes but I assure you that you won't regret it 😊

    God bless you girl 😊
    I left it far too late to read this absolutely wonderful book - in my view, this is the greatest piece of literature ever written..... bar none!
    Make sure you read this book before you're 18 yrs old, but if you're older then drop everything and read it - right now!
    But keep Google handy, you'll need it now and again, but I promise you that if you stick with it (and you must - really must) then you won't regret it.

    Honestly those sticky tabs every 30 pages is what I need to do! I am a writer more than a reader, and when I read such fantastically written books as War and Peace, I get so caught up in the inspiration of Tolstoy's genius that I put the book down and write. As a result, I don't remember the last time I actually finished a book. Definitely going to do that this summer!
