- Hello lovelies, today, I will be discussing Marie Antoinette's beauty secrets.
Marie Antoinette was born on 2 November 1755 - 16 October 1793 and was the last Queen of France before the French Revolution.
Skincare Routine:
Marie Antoinette would cleanse her skin with Eau Cosmetique de Pigeon, which is a face cleanser made with pigeons. The recipe was popularized by Danish women, and it included The juice of water lilies, melons, cucumbers, and lemons, as well as the crumbs of French rolls, white wine, and stewed pigeons among other curiosities. After washing her face, Marie would tone her skin was an astringent called Eau des Charmes, made of "drops exuded by grapevines in May."
The final step in her beauty routine was her signature face mask, which is still prevalent in France today. This iconic face mas would give your skin a fresh and glowing complexion. It consists of two teaspoons of Cognac, 1/3 cup of dry milk powder, brightening lemon juice, and one egg white.
Marie Antoinette loved to indulge in decadent baths in her Versailles washroom. The Queen frequently bathed, even though it was uncommon at the time. Marie would spike her bath with pine nuts, linseed, and sweet almonds. She would exfoliate her skin with rice bran-filled muslin pads.
Antoinette created all-natural DIY elixirs for her hair and had a beautiful strawberry blonde hair color under her large grey wig. To make her hair color pop, she would add turmeric, sandalwood, and rhubarb to her hair in a paste.

Makeup:
During the 18th century, smallpox was a major endemic disease that left many with dark marks and deep scars on their face. Marie would wear a veil of Creamy white face powder and a heavy rosy rouge on her cheeks. A lot of women would conceal their pockmarks with faux beauty marks made of velvet or satin, in cheeky shapes such as hearts, moons, and stars. And they could convey different things based on placement. Heart shape on the right cheek indicated that you were married, for instance, while shapes near the corner of the eye denoted passion. Antoinette was said to have applied hers near the corners of her mouth to indicate she'd like a kiss.

During Antoinette's reign, the Palace of Versailles, despite its arresting beauty, left much to be desired when it came to odor due to its lack of adequate bathrooms. To mask the smell of the toilet, Antoinette would fill her space with fresh flowers and potpourri as well as a fragrance mist of rose, jasmine, tuberose, and orange blossom. She would also apply essential oils like lavender on her body. Antoinette was also notorious for her obsession with signature fragrances, looking to French perfumer Jean-Louis Fargeon to create bespoke scents including the rose, jasmine, and bergamot blend she kept with her, even during her imprisonment in the Tower of Paris.

Laura, so interesting, thank you
Hi, may I know what kind of dry milk (the brand, I mean) did you use for this?
I am obsessed with her. I got to see her bedroom at Versailles. I have half a bedroom filled with Paris items and books of her.
Lucky. I’m obsessed too. I’m trying to convince my family to buy me $400 shoes that look like hers
@fred6059 I bet you got some good stuff & books! I too have some Marie Antoinette history and art books, books on Versailles, Louis XVI, friends family & people of the court of Versailles. 🤩
What are your most favorite books?
Me too . I saw her room at Versailles also. Its so beautiful ! 🌸
See, I'd love to visit Versailles just to enter her bedroom... But I'm afraid I'd collapse into tears, screaming 'leave me, leave me' at the tour guides. I don't know what it is about Antoinette but she's such a cherished historical figure for me, my favorite human in history.
@@Afaves where are these shoes from?
To expand upon what you mentioned about Versailles's odor and lack of bathrooms... there were actually NO bathrooms at Versailles. People just went in the halls behind curtains or stairs... so as beautiful as it was, it would have smelled like a sewer.
I guess they didn't have any chamber pots yet...
KCK Is this real?! So gross haha
@@hippyelise1 They did, just for some reason they weren't always used at Versailles... and the palace wasn't cleaned that often either. Ick.
@@PolkaDotz212 Yup, sadly, it was real.
And just think, with very few exceptions (like the queen), people didn't bathe either, just splashed on strong perfume... so add strong scent on top of BO on top of barnyard. The palace must have smelled nauseating.
Marie Antoinette is literally such a legend with an interesting life
From what I can tell, I think she was pure class. Never lost her dignity, even when mistreated and shamed by her guards. In fact, on her way onto the scaffold of the guillotine, she accidentally stepped on the executioner's foot. She apologized and assured him that she didn't do it on purpose.
@@kck9742 that's crazy I didn't know that thank you
My mother was inspired to name me Antoinette because of Marie Antoinette. 😊
My grandmother was also named Marie Antoinette. 💚
Thats amazing!
SunshineThruMyEyes - my name is Antoinette also.
@@annieabfab6258 So nice to meet a fellow Antoinette :)

Could you do one about Queen Victoria ❤
Thank you for spotlighting this much misunderstood queen. It's unfortunate that she has her name slandered through the centuries. She was a fancy and frivolous woman, but she wasn't malicious.
Funny, yesterday I watched that movie on DVD and now you're posting this🌹 An interesting woman for sure, too naive for her own well-being... I truly believe she had no idea what life was like outside of Versailles.
I love all things Marie Antoinette! I also really enjoy that movie and just love seeing all the scenery and clothing. You should do a Marie Antoinette inspired makeup collection! I’d be the first to buy it!!! 😍
Laura I'm interested to know how you store your collections. Do you resell the items or store them by era? I'm a bit of a minimalist and how collectors store their treasures is interesting to me. Especially since your items include items that can degrade over time like the cosmetics. Could you maybe do an episode on conservation of vintage clothing and cosmetics?
I love Marie Antoinette. I study her. Great video.
Thank you for not trying the pigeon mask lol 😝 Love your videos, I always get excited when I see a new one published.
I’ve found her so fascinating. Loved the movies made about her. 🛁
I went to Austria last December, & I went to Schonbrunn to visit Hofburg palace. The guide said that, I believe that Empress Maria Therese is Marie Antoinette’s mother. Marie was born Maria Antonia in Austria. Once she moved to France, she changed it to her famous name. I believe back in Empress Maria Therese’s time, the bath is just be sprayed with perfume. I forgot why the family couldn’t take a real bath.
I have been *obsessed* with Marie Antoinette since I watched the movie a few days ago--
Love this. I would love to see more marie Antoinette videos :)
This was a soothing video to watch, which is admittedly odd given the unnamed tragedy that looms over this. I like the technique you've developed for miming the creation and application of beauty products--it gives interest to what is otherwise just a static shot of, say, face powder. I would like to see more videos about Early Modern skin care and make-up: the use of stewed pigeons sounds like an concept pulled from ancient ideas of sympathetic magic, for example, which is the kind of historical continuity I personally find fascinating.
I love your tea pot and tea cup set where did you get that????
I love to have cut flowers in my house in the summer. I sometimes use petals from my garden's rose bushes in pot pourri. I love rose perfumes.
I have this tea too. It's delicious. I have it withouth sugar so I can taste naturally the flavour of fruits and flowers from Versailles.
Love this video Laura! The rose forever lilac bouquet is beautiful!! Adorable tea set! Thank you 💖
I loved this video! Such an interesting time period with fascinating beauty treatments that are very unexpected and unique!
OMG this is so interesting!
Thanks for watching
The wig made me really laugh!! I loved this vlog, well done. Have you tried the Laduree Marie Antoinette tea? It's based on the flowers in her garden at Le Petit Trianon, and it's lovely with a little honey. Take care of yourself in these difficult and strange times. Xxx
Marie-Antoinette herself never wore wigs, actually. Women rarely wore wigs in the 18th century, though men commonly used wigs. Hair extensions and accessories were extremely popular for both genders, though.
Love this! My scent profile is very similar to hers when it comes to perfume. French perfumes are my favorite, and while I can't exactly afford Black Jade, there are many options available online. My two favorites so far are Fleur D'Oranger, which was the cheapest at I believe around $25 and has a very fresh feel thanks to the orange blossom and lemon followed by heart notes of rose; and I believe a $50 one by Marina de Bourbon, though it's been a while since I purchased that one so the price may have changed, which is a bit more complex and I adore the notes of peach and pear with again rose, violet, freesia, and musk. Love the video, Laura, as always. 💗
All pretty things! Loved the tea pot!
I love this Laura! You’re wig is adorable( and your take on this type of thing is well-researched while also imaginative. I so appreciate u doing these. Ps I LOVE the Coppola movie, the music as a backdrop for the costumes and story is just perfect
This was such a treat!! More historical women!!!!
omg those poor pigeons :( I never knew people did stuff like that, jeez. Your rose tea set is precious!
Loved this Queen❤
Love this! Your wig is cute! Aw 💗
Thanks, Laura! I love that movie, too!
Oh my i love your channel! I'm so glad that i found this video, your other videos look so pretty too. Sadly i don't live in America / Europe so these products are either so rare or really expensive in my country.
This was an excellent video! Thank you Laura! I think i may try that diy face mask❤
Love the video Laura it was very interesting ...not sure I fully understood the thing about the pigeons or maybe I don’t really want to know but anyway enjoyed it... stay safe.😊 Bridget from California
WOW, great info!! Thanks for such a nice video! 😍😍
Marie, tenía lo mejor, todo me gusta,la ropa la decoración los acsesorios, los colores y estampados, qué bonito video 👍😘
this is sooo helpful! As I am also a natural strawberry blonde so it’s nice to know of some stuff to use in my hair.
If you could, since I’m a fan of hers, could look into the beauty routine of Carolyn Jones? She was incredibly beautiful, and I’m curious to know what she did to maintain her beauty. Thanks.
very interesting I really enjoyed this xxx
I have been watching your videos recently. I am a bit new to your channel. Thus far I really love your videos and value all of ur research you do to bring us something educational and interesting about these people and so on. I love history of any kind and this channel is very good and full of knowledge. Thank you for what you do! Keep it up! 👍

“Passed away…”
That’s quite a mild way to put it.
This was my favorite so far thanks
Merci pour l histoire de Marie Antoinette 👑
Hi Laura Jane...your storylines are great ! Can you please look into the perfume of Royal Secret by Germain Monteil ? An amazing fragrance from 1935. It was then bought by the five fragrance company...but sadly the beauty of it was never right. Now a vintage bottle can go for $400. ! I have one left !
Very well done. Beautiful Rose's and tea set .
My middle name Antoinette. Love all your videos. I subscribed. ♥️♥️

I love that look on you ☺️
Thank you.
Think about doing one on Eliza this the 1st (the fsughtet of Henry the 8th & the unfortunate Ann Boleyn) - you would find her beauty routine interesting.
The current queen elizabeth would be interesting too.

I’m very curious as to what the benefits of stewed pigeon could do for skin... that’s so odd
So strange, right? My only guess is maybe the fat rendered as a face oil?? I’m at a loss.
Same I’m so confused
Lindsey Stein it’s gross! That’s all they had in those days! If she lived today she would not be doing that.
@@tatyanasurenyan-krech6372 But this was a woman who had everything money could buy and CHOSE to put stewed pigeon on her face! There must have been some reason.
Happy easter 🐣!🇧🇷🇨🇭
Can you do princess Diana favorite beauty products ?
She did. ruclips.net/video/LO3GYYLSfDA/видео.html
According to 23 and me, im somehow related to Marie! (Along with thousands of others lol🤣)
Isobel E yep...nothing special
Ilovesesshomaru sama ok ? I was just stating something no need to be rude
Are you kidding!!! That’s totally amazing! 😂😂 I’d put that in my bio and resume 🤣
I find that hard to believe.
You look a lot like Marie Antoinette. I’ve always been fascinated with her. 🌷
Wow, I was a natural strawberry blonde too.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Please don’t put lemon or egg on your skin it is very irritating and damaging!
What about the cognac 🤣
@@HauntedMask24 FRR 😂😂
Egg won't hurt your skin. Citrus and Cognac will though!
@@laurenbray8314 there no real study or evidence that it works, which means it's just a waste of time and money, your skin might feel soft for a while and all, but it doesn't really do much... You could buy a serum that's actually proven work.
For the best skin advice go see my homie Hyram! He is the best when it comes to no bs skin care that actually works!
There is no such thing as a tower of Paris. She was imprisoned in the Conciergerie until her execution.
No doubt
My first video this so lovely
Has anyone used the Toners before? If so how have they worked for you?
That wig!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Ι DON'T LIKE THE TEA EXCEPT IF IS BLENDED
it was so stinky for so much of europes history. thats actually where the western custom of flowers for the dead comes from, to mask the odor.
She did not pass away was murdered I can't believe that you would say that she passed away you mean she was murdered she was really butchered her head was cut off
I'm aware of how she died, this video is not about that
@@Laurajaneatelier yes you're very true and yes you are very right I'm going to keep watching your videos the learn but it always touched my heart the way that poor woman done and all those women at that time was done and you know they was butcher like Henry's wives and and + the way that they tortured her little children and I guess they they did it's so sad they hurt her little kids the little kids didn't deserve that well she didn't deserve that either that was horrible when you talk about Marie you can't help but I think of them way she died in such a cruel and evil way that should never happen but it's what it's been about almost 500 years
Laura Jane was right to elide *why* Antoinette died since this video was about an aspect of how she *lived:* we don't want the tragedy of her execution to define and overshadow her actual life.
Not really understanding how using euphemism is offending you. The whole point is to be chill about it🙄 being bold about such a tragic death would have tainted this video. Plus, lets face it, had Laura said "her head was chopped off" umm yea that REALLY would give this gorgeous video the blood & guts it needs...and would also offend people. There really is no right way to say how someone died or why they did without offending someone, this comment is proof of that 🤦♀️
Washed their face with stewed pigeons???? Wtf ewwwww I’ll pass
Stewed pigeon!? Ewwwww yuk. Lol
I enjoy your videos, however that doll behind you is so creepy!
Cake.
The mask seems gross! But I guess she didn’t have other options.
