Based on social trends CA and TX at first sounds odd, but alliances are more often based on serving economic interest. California and Texas are the two wealthiest states in the republic; the 5th and 9th largest economies in the world. There are plenty of hypothetical scenarios that can work logically for this story.

As a Londoner with a keen interest in politics and love for America moreover, this is super scary and is really very close to the bone.
Saw a doc about Julius Caesar and the fall of the Roman Republic, and the bringing about if the Roman Empire. Many of us that live in democracies unfortunately take it for granted. The rise of authoritarianism around the global should be a like a fire alarm sounding to all us! Surely, we need to work to protect the democracy and not sleepwalk into the abyss.
I am looking forward to seeing this movie, but I worry it could be more prophetic than we fear.

This film trailer is chilling; gives the viewer a sense of dread and plausible chaos that would ensue. Many think the Coalition of California and Texas is ludicrous; yet it is theoretically plausible, especially if both secede for different reasons and Washington attacks them both then they form that Coalition.
Remember California, Florida and Texas comprise 115 million Americans, which is scary because Washington has problems with third world countries of just 10-20 million.
Then there’s 40 million Americans with AR’s; the scary thing is though Rural hunters with their millions of bolt action sniper type rifles, image if each of them decide on a Stalingrad War. Remember in Virginia where they used accurate sniper shots to take out power to tens of thousands, and that was just two hunters I believe, imagine what thousands can accomplish.
Then there’s the military, like in all Civil Conflicts where it’s members take sides; it won’t just blindly follow orders. Therefore you’ll have pilots, soldiers, seamen and entire installations take sides. Furthermore Hackers around the globe will use it to cover massive cyber attacks on our infrastructure. In the South and West the Red States have said they’d cut off the food supply chain to major urban areas. People have no idea how bad it would become; a 21st Century Civil War would make the first seem like a Reenactment skirmish.
The major catalyst would more than likely be a new Constitutional Convention, which most politicians fear because that would definitely trigger a war. It takes like 34 States to vote for a New Convention but 38 States to ratify, this is where the fuse is lit, because no side can get the 38, fear becomes anger turning to hate, followed by divorce, then suffering and carnage.

The problem with a civil between states is that it’s nearly impossible to separate Red States from Blue States. For every Red State, there are Blue Cities. For every Blue State there are millions of Red in the countryside. So this not be a North / South or East / West thing. This time around, every state could be at war with itself. And that's super messed up.

If this was to happen after an election it means that 10s of millions of people voted for a government and that the ones who start the Civil War are against the government voted in . Those people are identified as traitors and the response from th US government has to be very forceful with the threat of use of nuclear weapons. Only the president has the nuclear codes so it would be interesting to see how this movie will address that issue . So civil war is very unlikely in real life

People keep saying California and Texas allying makes no sense. To me it makes perfect sense. Both have been the most vocal about breaking away and one need look at history to see two sides can ally despite political and idealogical differences if they have a common goal and a larger threat. Them breaking away first makes sense as it wouldn't be about red or blue, but about the desire to go it alone, not be told what to do, and they would ally on that mind set.

I worked as civilian Air Force Police, Security for an NSA site, and then became an investigator for Homeland Security. All that time I wore an American flag patch on my uniform, and did so with an enormous amount of pride - I was happy knowing I did my part to keep the country and Americans safe and secure. I also lived in the Florida Keys - 90 Miles from Cuba, and heard the stories of Castro's takeover - soldiers going through people's homes and taking everything valuable, then shooting all the males in the head and... Well, you can guess the rest. As Castro's neighbor, I tried to warn people over the past 8 years of the dangers of having a dictator, but most are like, "that'll never happen, and besides, maybe things will be better with just one person making decisions instead of waiting 6 months for Congress to pass something". No, they won't be better - they'll be much, much worse; that's what dictators do. For a while now I've also been saying America is on the verge of a civil war. I had also lived in Charleston SC and Savannah GA, but now live in Chicago - and I think of how I love the song 'Dixie' which was something President Lincoln has said as well; that the song brought him to tears because it reminded him of the beauty of the South, but was sad that the country was being torn apart. I agree completely; some of the kindest people I've ever met were in Charleston and Savannah, and those places still have a piece of my heart. Last night after the Colorado Supreme Court announced they found Trump ineligible to be on the ballot there were so many threats of death and violence online coming from the Right that I've never see anything like it. And, comments like, "we don't care who wins the election; Trump will be our leader even if we have to insert him into the White House by force, and we're ready for this". I think the country is in big, big trouble and I think it's all over one man - and it all just breaks my heart.

This looks interesting. I've seen some people saying "TX and CA would never be on the same side" and I think the goal there is to not have to pit those two sides against one another. That would make the film seem like it's taking sides on actual current day political and cultural conflicts if one side were to ultimately prevail. By teaming together the two states that are probably the most representative of the two major political parties here in the States it makes it a lot easier to have an analysis or deconstruction of American politics without anyone disregarding the film entirely for perceived bias.

    • @CitroChannel

Not only that, but you can rationalize those two states having an alliance at least during a wartime scenario if they both decided to secede from the Union after a President refused to step down and began to serve a third term or something which they mention the current POTUS in the film to be a third term President. Like more just an alliance of convenience to fight the civil war and not some kind of political union meant to last after things have settled. California and Texas are both states that could probably survive on their own the best if the Union broke apart.

California has its own issues to be sure, but it would be able to function as a small country if it had to... especially because there would be a lot of European nations happy to ally with it to help with trade deals and such due to it being the center of a lot of tech industry stuff. The fact that California's tax subsidies are used to help a lot of other states is pretty solid proof they would be (relatively) fine compared to the vast majority of states in a similar situation. Texas, as mentioned, is one of the other few states that could probably survive on its own as long as it also eventually made alliances/deals with other western nations. Other states in the US would likely have to group together into their own unions to do what California or Texas could do.

I watched Leave the World Behind the other day, and then this is coming out. For whatever reason, while watching the trailer, The Last Ship, a tv show, came to mind. There is a part in the show where the regional governors attempt a coup, and to break apart the US into regions under those governors. For whatever reason, that keeps entering my brain. Texas, and Cali is just weird. My only guess would be intention to secede, and working together temporarily expressly for that purpose.

The actor for the young version of Senator Snow looks like he is barely 20 years old and the geriatric Donald Southerland looked like he had a foot in the grave in the first series of Hunger Games movies. I'll be watching your reaction soon enough since I'm unable to watch at the moment, but I think the reaction of some, to bury their heads and say they don't need to see this because it seems too real, is kind of the point. Make people see what a second civil war would actually do.
Honestly, since this is being made, I really hope this doesn't shy away from what might actually happen. I'm anticipating somewhere a scene that addresses potential ethnic cleansing or mass killings of political opponents. There is a lot of present day issues being presented like the targeting of civilians and the press, which unfortunately for some, might be what they would actually like to see in this country. The like of "what kind of American are you?" SHOULD be horrifying to everyone, but we know there are plenty of people in this country who have a definition of what an American is, that does not include swaths of the population.
I won't say I am looking forward to watching this, but I definitely will be seeing it to see what kind of message this is trying to say.

There are thousands of people who are pushing for this shit and it's not the glamorous, shootem up fantasy that they think it is. War is brutal. War is horrific. War should be avoided and god willing this mirror 🪞 film may wake enough people up to stop this shit from happening.

I don’t do very well with films like this. I feel films like this, “The Hunt”, and even “The Purge” give those sick people out there really “bad ideas”. Many of us who don’t wear roses colored glasses and are engaged don’t need this kind of thing. This isn’t entertainment. I’m not sure what the point of why this was even made and if this was a means to educate people to be involved and unified, it’s failing. Hard pass for me. The story effectively seems to be that there is a President on his 3rd term which would be against the Twenty Second Amendment. It's not too hard to imagine a backstory of how that could happen. Assuming the rogue President is backed by the North East of the US then the only alliance capable of breaking that faction would likely be Texas & California working together so it does make a certain amount of sense and makes it more about the principles of the Constitution rather than Liberal vs Conservative ideology.
