Here's a baseball story from the '80's. A situation where inches one way or the other, or slower reflexes on my part could have meant an completely different baseball history.
I was a minor league trainer for the Dodgers, and it was Spring Training 1989. This particular day, was my day to work with the big club; (the minor league trainers rotated, having on one day with the big club, each rotation.)
There was a big club game at the stadium, and we needed something from the training room, in a hurry. The asst trainer, Charlie Strausser, asked me to go, and said, "Take Tommy's golf cart, it's right outside."
I looked at Charlie, with a 'Yeah, right...", look on my face, replying, "I'd rather run, even in this heat, it would be better than the shit i'll get from Tommy." Lasorda had a custom golf cart, with a portion of a 3' diameter fiberglass baseball on the front of thr Dodger Blue cart.
He thought he was hot shit, cruising' around in a personal cart. One of the favorite pastimes at the Dodgertown bar was stealing and hiding his golf cart. The truth about Lasorda is everyone put up with him, emphasis on the 'put up with'. He would flip out when he cart was missing, and everyone got a laugh.
Charlie tells me, "Don't sweat Tommy, I'll cover for you." (I can't remember what it was we needed, but it WAS really urgent, and it's a good ten minute walk back to the main building, where everything was.)
So, off I go in Tommy's cart. As usual, by this stage of spring training, half of the minor league teams were on the road, but there were a couple of minor league games going on he practice fields.
The fields being used meant there was no one on the paths back to the training room, so I was going as fast as the cart would go, (Tommy's cart was also faster than the rest of the carts we used.)
When there was a big league game and minor league games at Dodgertown, cars were parked everywhere; there wasn't much parking at Dodgertown. I was haulin' ass down the back road to the facility; I planned on going in close to the minor league access, then cutting through the building to the major league training room, as it would be faster.
There were cars parked on both side of the road, with a Dodgertown facilities maintenance truck on the right side, parked so the nose was 5-10' from the door I was going in. There was some plumbing work going on, inside, and this was the plumber's rig, a big UPS kind of truck.
Just as I'm about to swing around the front of the truck, and stop, here comes two bright white uniforms, flashing from in front of the truck. NO players are supposed to be in the building during games; no exceptions, so I wasn't watching for anyone.
So much for rules; I suddenly have two players square in front of the sppeding golf cart, and they saw me at the same time I saw them. Their eyes looked as big as dinner plates when I swerved to the left, and started to roll the damn cart right over them.
I jerked the wheel back to the right to keep from rolling the cart, the wheels caught, then slid, and bang I buring the bumper mounted vise right into the fiberglass baseball, burying it DEEP into the fiberglass ball. You couldn't even see the vise.
I looked at the two players tangled on the ground, and I frankly don't know who was more scared. It was my second year, and I had just been promoted to Vero Beach for the season, and put in charge of all post-surgical rehab, for the organization; a very big deal.
One of the players had just been drafted, and the other was also in his second year; both were assigned to A League Bakersfield, but I knew them, well. Putting on my best hard ass face, I told them to get their asses where they were supposed to be, and "This never happened."
I continued, "First, help me get this damn golf cart off this vise." So, as quickly as possible, Erik Karros and Mike Piazza helped me pull the cart loose from the truck, then they went back to their game.
I grabbed the item from the training room, parked Tommy's cart where no one could see it, and grabbed another cart for the ride back to the stadium.
When I got there, I pulled Charlie to the side, and told him what happened. When he quit laughin', and asking me just how tight my ass got when it all happened, he turned towards Tommy, and said, "You owe George, he just saved you having to walk back to the clubhouse. Facilities took your cart to work on it, and he brought you one to drive, instead."
Lasorda never found out about the damage to his cart, and until right now, there was only four people who know how close baseball history was to being completely different.
If I would have hit either one of those guys, the future would have changed; hell, Piazza might have never made the Hall.
That errand, and herding alligators off the practice fields, using a fungo and a golf cart were two of the craziest times at Dodgertown, for me.

At the video time of 7:39 minutes, this is the mother of all blunders/gaffes of all time: The fielder, number 33 Walker, catches a ball in foul territory with a man on base, then proceeds to give the ball to the fan which should have been hurled back in. I hope that he was explaining to the fan why he needed the ball back and to replace it with another.

9:31 The best reason why the All Star game shouldn't determine home-field advantage in the World Series. Let it be fun. There are other ways to get the game to end without having to make it as serious.

DAK4Blizzard It was way too much of a joke before there was an incentive to win. It wasn't that fun to watch from the mid-'90s until 2003.

The '90s were such an interesting decade. I didn't get to fully experience them, considering I was only 5 when they ended. I remember when my Marlins were a young franchise, making their way to the World Series after only five seasons in the league. Special times.
Edit: Okay, I don't remember them "making their way to the World Series," but I sure do remember the Series.

Look at how many of the 70s ballparks had few to no seats behind home plate. Terrible sight lines, cameras blocking seats, Soviet-style architecture - and they wondered why so many teams had dismal attendance records.

HAR HAR HAR!! Love the dig you gave to the fucking whiners about you playing music by playing the original audio with the world record Macarena doo-diddy!!! Said many times after subscribing, on many different videos...I LOVE your music selection and I love how at times the lyrics and beat match the video!! But seriously...what`s up with the satalitte time lapse videos? Still great music, but I thought it was going to show erosion, raising water levels, or something. Pardon the baseball analogy, but those are from left field!! What is the story behind them?

  • @0515stan

Sorry, but I had to dislike this video. If I want to listen to music, I'll play a CD. I wanted to see these clips complete with the play-by-play. As far back as these clips go, it would have been great to know who the players were. If you plan to do more of these videos, do us all a favor and google "play-by-play" so you can learn what that is.
