    Making good progress Rob, steady and sure :-)
    I worked in telephone exchanges for many year with 48V battery supply.
    You will barely feel the battery unless your hands are really sweaty, although the back emf from operating and releasing relays can make you jump.
    The real danger is from being burnt from short circuits caused by metal tools or jewellery, only 48V but potentially hundreds of amps that will vaporise metal !
    Use lots of insulation tape on spanners, screwdrivers etc. - Martin.

      I'll second that. Once when we were using a 24 volt lead acid battery (normally used for powering a Mitchell cine camera) as a lab power source an accidental short circuit caused the insulation on the wires connected to it to melt in a few seconds.

    Beyond standard 'safety' issues,... the BMS is to control the charge/discharge 'characteristic' of the specific battery technology.
    - Although the LEAD-ACID 'mimic' will allow for a - next stage - function proof,/test... does the FMG cell have an IDENTICAL 'characteristic' ???
    - - If you can alter these 'curves' via software or harware thresholds over time,... to match those seen in the FMG cells during these charge/discharge cycles,... all should be well.
    (and safe)
    .

    There are nice 3 phase motor power control boxes for electric bicycles. They are normaly easy to operate and they are not expensive.
    For bms it is possible to use small buck+boost dc dc converter boards. Each cell in battery can have its own buck+boost board .Some of these boards can cost less then 2£ and they keep the set voltage stable even when input voltage would be variable.

    • @ThinkingandTinkering
      @ThinkingandTinkering  4 года назад +3

      not on the twizy mate the motor uses a sevcon controller which can be accessed but is fairly complex - plus you need to get into the actual BMS to access the rest of the twizy operating system

    • @Kapalek84
      @Kapalek84 4 года назад

      I guess if Twizy would be used on roads It would need to use original hardware. Only thing I could think of now is to build a external battery and use 220V inverter that could charge the original battery through Twizy standard charging port, but Twizy would need to be parked in order to use this charging method when on the road.

  • @PressToDigitate

    Cars are nice, but they have form-factor constraints on drop in replacements that you'll find inconvenient to match. Why not focus on Home Power storage for Solar/Wind/Microhydro, etc. instead, where the shape, size and weight are less critical (and the main competition, deep cycle FLA batteries, much easier to beat on those points)? Here's the thing: The cost of buying and replacing battery banks for Home Power applications is a major inhibiting factor, as the costs of both Solar Panels and Wind Turbines are plummeting. Moreover, its difficult to accumulate and connect battery storage capacity in regular small increments. If you could offer a monthly subscription to buy your paper Carbon batteries/supercapacitors in one or a few Blades at a time, on a regular basis, it would be a winner. I could easily install two 400W Wind Turbines on utility poles I've already got, but after lurching through FLA battery issues with a 100W Solar Panel, I tested for several months, I'm on hold on the Home Power project, over batteries. I (and, I'm sure, others) would love to subscribe for your Blades on a monthly basis, and grow thousands of dollars (and Watt-hours) worth of storage capacity over a period of 2-3 years, at between, say, $40 - $120 per month. Selling power storage capacity in discrete increments on subscription isn't being done anywhere, but is something most Home Power enthusiasts would go for. With your snap-in interconnects, and programmable controller, all you need is a cheap chassis that you can give away with every X# of Blades purchased (i.e. half the number required to fill it), and you've got a huge value proposition there. People would overprovision themselves with storage and add more Solar or another Turbine if the storage problem were solved this way; you'd end up selling both as accessories to the storage bank itself (which really is the biggest bugaboo in Home Power).

      @@ThinkingandTinkering I'm just talking about selling *the same Blades* to *additional customers* that you may be able to address *sooner* . "Off-the-Grid" or non-Intertie Home Power systems may not be very big in the UK, but they are here (and in CA & AU). There could be thousands of people subscribing to buy new Blades each month, assuming the controller program just managed the ramping up of storage in discrete increments - a relatively simple software issue. Because 'Direct Sales' will always net you more than sales through dealers/distributors, the question is: 'What way of productizing the Blades makes those direct consumer purchases most user-friendly?' It is unlikely (although not impossible) that adding to an electric car's range incrementally would be practical, but in Home Power, most users do that anyway - just in bigger, heavier chunks of nasty, obsolete, acid-bathed Lead.

    The Twizy battery is inside such a weighty and bulky enclosure partly to contain an explosion - should the li-ion cells go into meltdown. If your battery technology is much safer than li-ion, you should be able to dispense with the existing box and build a much lighter one - possibly even of a rigid plastic.. Of course, the weight savings of doing so would go towards increasing the vehicle's overall performance.

    Dear Sir Robert,
    Good afternoon from Pakistan.
    My country has focused on renewable energy and main source is solar.
    Almost everything ok but we don't have good storage batteries for domestic use.
    I had researched a little and found nickel iron and nickel cadmium could be good option for small systems. But both batteries are not available in our market due to high prices and lack of good publicity.
    Can we make replica of iron Edison battery?
    Or could we go for another option which could last for at least 5 to 7 years.
    Temperature is main issue in summer, it's 45 degree (+- ) almost daily.
    So we need those batteries which could perform well in high temperature.
    Need your guidelines please.
