But your country is now sending unprecedented amounts of bombing aid to another country while your own citizens are dying from drug use, living in tents, and unable to buy homes. As they old men are gradually dying and being voted out, if you don't think AOC, Omar and Pete will send boys off to die to maintain their newfound lifestyles, you are crazy.

Dont just recall 2014. Putin invaded two provinces of the country of Georgia in 2008 and is still there. And has troops in Armenia, Transniestria ('guarding' a huge old Soviet ammo dump) and in places like Mali, Africa although under the guise of the Wagner Group. His doctrine of protecting 'Russian speakers wherever they may be' gives a carte blanche pretext to threaten and intervene. When the Olympics end maybe the trigger..he would not want to upset his Chinese 'ally' by acting beforehand. Nations need to penalise him and his cronies financially.

In the military assessment business, we have a saying: the enemy gets a vote. Just because it doesn't happen, doesn't mean we were wrong. The act of saying something WILL happen, changes the probability that it will. The worst thing you want to be in a fight is predictable. So when we tell the world Putin is invading a week from Sunday, Putin will be all like "well not now" and then reasses. Which forces us to reassess our assessment--and thus the wheel turns.

That's the other thing which doesn't seem to be mentioned about this situation. For four years, Putin had Trump - and the rest of the Republican Party - helping him to destroy America. So, why is this happening _now?_ Well, it seems obvious that he wants his Republican supporters back in power.
And, among other things, this Ukraine stuff is also a way to make Americans fearful, to make Americans unhappy - which is exactly what the Republican Party itself tries to do when a Democrat is in the White House. I'm not saying that this is Putin's _entire_ motivation, but there's a reason why it didn't happen when Trump was president, don't you think?
When Trump was president, Putin didn't _need_ this. Trump was destroying America just fine, already. And Putin wouldn't want to rock the boat when his plan was working so well, already.

Our goal must be to prevent a global war with dire nuclear implications. To do that Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia and Finland should be maximally funded - lavishly funded - as a neutral buffer zone. This corridor must be a multidimensional, autonomous trade consortium within itself - neither NATO nor Russian controlled. However, such preferred trade options for intra-corridor trade would neither preclude nor restrict active and prosperous trading with BOTH the EU and Russia. This suggested 'Eastern European Corridor' is an inexpensive, practical war-preventative.

    • @richardball3585

Latvia and Estonia are already members of NATO. Finland is an Enhanced Opportunity Partner (as is Ukraine and other countries including Sweden). Apart from Belarus, which is firmly under Russia's control, there is no buffer zone. And these countries have minimal trade with each other.

Our goal to prevent a global war with dire nuclear implications should involve removing the sociopathic dictator of Russia by any means possible. It's hilarious to think a neutral zone would be seen by him as anything other than crying for mercy by a cowardly west.

    • @dukeon

Sounds good in principle but obviously with hindsight now (it’s May 2nd) Finland and Sweden are poised to become full NATO members, leaving Russia and Belarus ass out, if you’ll pardon the expression. The countries you mentioned don’t want to be part of any kind of buffer zone anyway - they were used that way by the USSR to absorb an attack by the West during the Cold War. Russia is on its own now with its lapdog Belarus.

difference between "looking dangerous" and "being dangerous".Russia describes military doctrine as defensive military doctrine. With regard to nuclear weapons specifically, Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons: in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies,in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened.
    oops
    google russia deadhand
The 'Perimeter' system, dubbed in the United States and Europe the 'Dead Hand', is an automatic control system for a retaliation nuclear strike. To put it simply, if Russia's territory is devastated after a nuclear attack, the Perimeter system automatically strikes the enemy's territory with its own nuclear missiles

In WW2, Hitler was doing similar things, he first annexed Austria then Checoslovakia then Poland and each time the allies didn't do much against it. The fear is that if the US allows Putin to annex other countries' territory evetually it can turn into something much worse (which could matter to you) like it did with Hitler and WW2.

@@GRegBellay Yes, I'm perfectly aware of how WW2 developed. While in the meantime the Capitol is being besieged ala Bastille Day, the country next door has for all intents and purposes declared martial law, the current administration is doing exactly what his constituents don't care about, and the former president, the worst since Andrew Johnson, is very likely to return. We need to clean up our own back yard before we go trying to play in Asia.

Ukraine is a goldmine in natural resources, and is actually one of the highest ranking among European countries in this regard. Taking Ukraine and utilizing its resources would render any sanctions by other countries ineffective.
