I will be ordering some supplies for my next trip to town so I can try a few of the things mentioned. I even picked up a single stage press to go with the progressive

    I am very impressed with how well those Lee Load All's work, you make them sing. I steered away from them because they didn't have as good reviews as the Mec's, and at the time I could not find a .410 set of dies for the Lee press. Now with 3d printing you can do so much more, and it makes these so much better. I have been lucky finding my Mec presses used for around $100 each, have 3 of them now, one for each 12, 20, .410 and they work great. Your channel is not only informative, but makes my days a lot better when I am doing dull word processing at a desk all day (exaggerating of course)

    I'll have to check out that hair curler trick. I just cast a bunch of 00 buck and got timing down so that instead of one long sprue from the Lee mould I got 6 individual sprues. Was going to put them in the pot for next time but thought hey, why not load them? Put first one in sprue point up. then place angle to angle for maximum fit-just have to weigh each payload for data. Ought to have a big tumbling effect on old magazines.

    In the 8 pellet 000 load you used 23 grains of Longshot. Did you try larger charge weights? Did you find that more powder gave too much pressure or just patterned bad? I would think that you could go to 27 or 28 grains. Great videos, keep up the work.

    I'm just getting into shotshell reloading. I've been metallic reloading for over 26 years, and I'm realizing that probably makes me just smart enough to be dangerous. Shotshell reloading is a whole different animal. On the 3" cheddite 15 pellet 00 load, if I wanted to drop that to 12 pellets is it as simple as adding another 1/4 inch fiber wad? I made a dummy round with Cheddite 3" hull, 29.5 grains of longshot, x12x gas seal, 1/2 inch fiber wad + 1/4 inch fiber wad, 12 pellets 33 cal. 00, clear plastic overshot disk with roll crimp. Everything stacks up nicely. The shot I have is Hornady. They are true 33 cal., (measured them myself) and weigh 53.2 grains each, 12 of them is 638.4 grains. If my calculations are correct, just shy of 1 1/2 ounces. About 18 grains shy. Just about right to buffer them if I want to. What would be a max charge to work up to? I simply cannot find any data with that payload weight and those components in my books. My gun is gas operated and I'm only going to work it up to where it reliably cycles it. Or as Johnny would say, am I already about to "blow my face off"?

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  2 года назад +1

      Yes dropping out a few pellets for some fiber wadding is fine. Max charge for 1.5 ounces is 30.6 with longshot and it’s 1310 fps 11,600 psi. Hodgdon has free load data on their website for all of their powder. The 1.5 ounce loads are typically for 2 3/4” shells but work great in 3” with extra fiber wadding for more cushion. Lowers pressure.

    Morning Tyler.
    I was just wondering about load data for hs-6, 1 1/4 oz loads. Hodgdon do not list any for 2 3/4 straight wall cheddite hulls/primers but they do for fiocchi, federal hoa/gold medal using winchester primers. it's listing between 32 - 34 grains on the federals and 35 for fiocchi's. Could I use 32 grains with a cheddite hull/primer, gaulandi green ssw or mg42 and 12 pellets of .31 cal? Have you loaded much up with hs-6?

    Some states have prohibitions against using buckshot for deer hunting. The laws have been on the books for decades. Nobody even knows why in most cases. Some say it's not reliable enough and therefore "unsporting" and inhumane Others say it's because it's so deadly that it's not "sporting" enough. That's ridiculous. Guess the state governing or regulatory body needs petitioning to correct that in light of there being no scientific or practical reason to justify a buckshot prohibition.

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  2 года назад +1

      Yeah that one never made sense to me either. I guess one way they could be looking at it is #4 buck being .24 caliber may not be effective enough at longer ranges. No reason to prohibit the larger pellets though.

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 2 года назад +1

      @@theshotgunscientists You would think that if they finally legalized .410 slug and most handgun cartridges, that buckshot wouldn't be such a big deal either. I honestly think there must be a personal bias against or for some stuff in "regulations". Of course I remember a time in Colorado when .357 Magnum was not legal as a handgun round for deer. Theoretically was not powerful enough. That had to be a deliberate bias to eliminate the most common center-fire magnum revolver cartridge ever used for deer.
