PETER: 'I'm a gambling man, so I'm going to take a punt.' JAMES: 'Why don't we all throw in £50K and make this happen?!'

Theo Whatshisname makes a much more valid point shortly afterwards.
The bones of what he's saying are right though. I mean, if you were that bothered about power consumption you'd just go fully thin-client using something like Citrix.
Yeah, Peter Jones knows everything about everything, and if you have a tech business, don't you dare presume to know more than him! The Very PC pitch was poor, but Peter Jones and that guy who runs Viglen for Alan Sugar are possessed of the same tendency that makes them want to show off their expertise and in the process disprove they have any.
Jason Gomez He waa just making a point that it's technically possible. The whole argument was unnecessary because how much power would a switch actually draw? Barely any.
If anyone is confused about what his company does it is building pcs from parts that you can get in a computer shop. He uses the least power consuming parts from each manufacturer to build his own pcs. The problem is that the pcs are slower and more expensive as they have to be built by hand. As for the software programmed into the machine, if it actually exists, it's basically forcing Power/Battery Saving mode as the default setting rather than Performance. There are a lot of videos online of people building their own pc like him. It's just that he uses the worst parts from every manufacturer instead of the best parts from every manufacturer and is trying to make money out of it rather than do it as a hobby.
The problem was the high valuation resulting from a low equity and profit combination (thus valuation). It would have taken them forever to get their money back and make any profit. James Caan mentioned this.

SalemKid Right...Peter Jones knows about RS232 and I doubt he's done too badly with the ladies. Pussies that use the internet to anonymously insult people probably don't do so well though.
As a PC tech myself he was insulting their intelligence by trying to use PC jargon to mislead them into believing it was something special, much less 5 million pounds. Further prodding had him revealing that it was no better than buying the parts off the shelf, putting it together and turning on the power saving feature, in fact it was MORE EXPENSIVE! I'll tell you it feels really good to see this guy get roasted, trying to pull off a stunt like that.
"What's proprietary in your PC?" What the fuck, Theo. Not many PC manufacturers use proprietary parts. You could be asking Alienware or HP that same question.
Except AW or HP don't claim to have a fraction of the power consumption using exactly the same parts. Unless the guy had proprietary core components (impossible in today's market) his claims could not be true. Theo only exposed this blatant lie.
+dacorpsemak3r Lots of manufacturers probably do claim that. There are several modesl which use a fraction of the power compared to other models. Any machine with an Atom CPU and other less power hungry parts could said to be green. Cause they do use a lot less power than other machines.
BenRangel Sure Atoms use less power, but they deliver correspondingly worse performance as well. The guy claimed that his computers deliver similar performance, but with lower power consumption, which was simply not true.

"Some PCs use as much as 200W" says the guy being watched on a RUclips video on a PC with a 1000W power supply. I guess I am at the root of the problem here
Just because you have a 1000w PSU doesn't mean it draws that amount constantly. It means it can deliver that amount if your components demand it say in a heavy GPU and CPU load exercise like certain games. What matters is the efficiency of the power supply.
+ManicMindTrick Of course, I meant my comment to be ironic, but to be more specific: Average draw is around 300W. Max draw I've seen is 890w. 80+ platinum efficiency, so I assume that it's pretty efficient. But to be fair, this was uploaded 2008 so the technology is a little dated in the fast evolving industry.
+Janoy Cresva I highly doubt that anything more than the power supply was this man's design, if that. It is, and was, possible to make a low powered computer using power efficient parts that still proforms as well as it's more power hungry competitors. I haven't seen the whole presentation, but I assume this is no more than your average off-the-shelf rig with more power efficient parts sold at a premium. I have built such computers for people before.
*sigh* He was only using RS232 as an EXAMPLE of something that's over 20 years old and was more environmentally-friendly than the stuff he was trying to sell them. @6:53 Peter's face is exactly like mine. Theo's question is dead on -- it's off the shelf parts, anyone can build that gear themselves. His parroting about being a revolutionary is a farce. Not to mention that a few years later the Raspberry Pi came out...
All you need to understand is a valuation of 5 million for a company that made a net profit of 24k. Even if you believe his projections of 100k net profit the following year, you'll have ploughed in 250k and got 5k back. At that rate it would take 50 years to break even on investment. The pitcher either thinks they are incredibly stupid, or he hasn't considered his pitch at all.
Is that true? There was a report in the Mirror (for what that's worth - not very much I know) of a £1.5M turnover back in 2009, which gives no indication of profit except that surely it must be significantly lower.
I personally like that there are different styles in every "dragon den" show, I feel bad for the people with bad inventions but at the same time I find it hilarious on this show.
Well, over a decade later and they seem to be running a small local computer systems installation firm. Apparently they're just profitable enough to stay in business... They don't claim they have world changing green tech anymore though, for some reason :-)
Yeah on average for a gaming PC Id say most people use 500-750 watt. Im using 1000 watt myself. Its definitely increased as hardware has gotten more powerful.
You know what, Very PC succeeded where eMachines failed, it's survived multiple consumer spending habit changes, multiple recessions and a pandemic. Fair play.
I think the main reason why the Dragons didn't invest in this guy (aside from the fact that his pitch honestly wasn't that great) was because the UK had a lot of small, independent PC manufacturers in the 1980s and 1990s, only for the likes of Dell, HP and Apple to come in and completely steamroller the independent manufacturers out of existence in the early-mid 2000s. He might have made a success out of it in the end, but there was no guarantee that the big manufacturers wouldn't have just copied his business model (which was essentially just sticking laptop parts in PC cases).
Ali Abbas cheaper and fucking stupid. That's like saying commodore 64s are cheaper than IBM's Power 8, so it's a good idea to build a server out of commodore 64s. RS232 is still used but it's certainly not as widespread anymore, because of things like Ethernet
This guy will make a big success some day,he was 26 hear, regardless of wether it was rubbish or not,he speaks well, conducted himself well, and has the balls to have a go,good luck to you peter Hopton
Peter Hopton was right, Peter Jones on RS232? That was developed in the 1960s. In fact it was extinct even when this episode was aired. Its the sort of thing you could use with Commodore 64 era computers. Today, its the equivalent of someone saying: "You could use punch cards, it would be an old fashioned way of doing it" "I could do it though couldn't I?"
Ya'll can laugh all you want, Very PC is still ACTIVE and making crap loads of cash. I was very surprised to see amount of hate this 26 year old received in there by a bunch of bullies. Fair play to Peter for not giving up, and becoming a very wealthy man!
Bullies my ass. Whether they're wrong about its potential, fair enough. That doesn't mean they should have invested. Investment means you get what you expect back. You can't say that would have happened undesputedly.
Am I the only one who wanted to hear the ENTIRE tech debate between the two Peters?

Duncan did the ultimate burn!!My God!
This guy didn't get an investment, but now got more exposure than ever.
Current position: plus £86k
Not a bad outcome if you ask me! Ha-ha.
bad exposure tbh
I like trains.
k den lol
I personally like that there are different styles in every "dragon den" show, I feel bad for the people with bad inventions but at the same time I find it hilarious on this show.
Well, over a decade later and they seem to be running a small local computer systems installation firm. Apparently they're just profitable enough to stay in business...
They don't claim they have world changing green tech anymore though, for some reason :-)
I’m Jenny, and I’m not in the Den yet, and for that reason... IM OUT
Of course Jenny isn't in this, this video is from 2008
yeah because... SHES OUT
Lol Jenny jokes are time traveling now!
Debs looking quite good back in the day
alex watson now she looks old
Logical Network yes
"Pc's consume up to 200 watts" this video is definately quite old...
The Samwich definitely
yeah it's from 2008
My laptop is fuckin 400w
Yeah on average for a gaming PC Id say most people use 500-750 watt. Im using 1000 watt myself. Its definitely increased as hardware has gotten more powerful.
You know what, Very PC succeeded where eMachines failed, it's survived multiple consumer spending habit changes, multiple recessions and a pandemic. Fair play.
Google Company dissed by Dragon's Den makes £1.5m
I think the main reason why the Dragons didn't invest in this guy (aside from the fact that his pitch honestly wasn't that great) was because the UK had a lot of small, independent PC manufacturers in the 1980s and 1990s, only for the likes of Dell, HP and Apple to come in and completely steamroller the independent manufacturers out of existence in the early-mid 2000s. He might have made a success out of it in the end, but there was no guarantee that the big manufacturers wouldn't have just copied his business model (which was essentially just sticking laptop parts in PC cases).
RS232 lol lets go back to 1970
yeah Peter was just trying to out nerd him to make himself look smarter. fucking idiot he is
Ali Abbas
cheaper and fucking stupid. That's like saying commodore 64s are cheaper than IBM's Power 8, so it's a good idea to build a server out of commodore 64s.
RS232 is still used but it's certainly not as widespread anymore, because of things like Ethernet
@@toxy3580 hi boob
Super vidéo j'ai trop kiffé continuer comme ça you are boss
This man's hair is distributed wrong, his beard looks like how Antarctica broke off Pangea many millions of years ago
9:52 "pretty atrocious" xD
'' i think i performed very well'' loool , reminds me of the life of brian with the headless, limbless torso fighting on lool
4:34 How does a server/thin client setup apply to the home user?
" I've never heard of such rubbish in my entire life" Duncan 'Legend ' Bannatyne.
This guy will make a big success some day,he was 26 hear, regardless of wether it was rubbish or not,he speaks well, conducted himself well, and has the balls to have a go,good luck to you peter Hopton
Lmao absolutely loved Duncan’s humour 😂😂
Peter Hopton was right, Peter Jones on RS232? That was developed in the 1960s. In fact it was extinct even when this episode was aired. Its the sort of thing you could use with Commodore 64 era computers. Today, its the equivalent of someone saying:
"You could use punch cards, it would be an old fashioned way of doing it"
"I could do it though couldn't I?"
Duncan killed it... OMG I thought he was talking to the nuggin asking for investment also at first.. LMFAO
This man went on to become Windows. His name was Bill Gates.
0:12 Yo what's up with this dude? Guy looks high af
wow!
wow!
The Scandinavian Gaming Channel
he's tripping some major balls...what are you on btw?
Rico Cori
I'm on the moooon brother!
The Scandinavian Gaming Channel
that's high af brah, watch out!
The irony that I currently have a Stadia ad on this page!
If he had asked for 50k he might have got an offer. He's got a business, but a mad valuation.
Because he was deluded enough to think he had a big brand. If it was a big brand like Mad Catz he'd be turning over 9 figure sums.
"Wasn't talking to you. I was talkin to the other Peter"
Hahaha, humiliated on television
5:54 you can literally heart his heart break
Even James gave him a kicking and he loves everyone
5:43 - Ouch!
hahaha
that was classic 😂
"well, Peter, that was obviously pretty atrocious." hahaha
"Average power consumption of 200 Watt"
Laughs in 2021 GPU
Any advice on how to get captions / subtitles for this clip?
Ya'll can laugh all you want, Very PC is still ACTIVE and making crap loads of cash. I was very surprised to see amount of hate this 26 year old received in there by a bunch of bullies.
Fair play to Peter for not giving up, and becoming a very wealthy man!
wheres the proof he's making a lot of cash, I read he's lost a bunch
Bullies my ass. Whether they're wrong about its potential, fair enough. That doesn't mean they should have invested. Investment means you get what you expect back. You can't say that would have happened undesputedly.
9:52 way to kick a man while he's down LMAO
Yeah Peter Jones and his 6 houses and 2 yachts is really 'green'.
I'm waiting to see someone who gets knocked back say "Well bollocks to you then" as he walks out.
"High tech accusations are flying all over the Den..."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Note to anyone losing hair: don't delude yourself like this sap has. Shave it off.
big guy hmm interesting comment from a big man
You seen him now? He has
big guy like theo?
I think this guy is actually unaware of his incompetence. It happens a lot and I've seen it (too) many times. Very sad.
how much is dell worth? How much technology do they have that is proprietary?
Some epic trolling from Banatyne.
