- Nigel Mansell joined Motor Sport for an evening of in-depth discussion of a career that included drives for some of Formula 1’s most prestigious teams, the 1992 F1 championship and 1993 CART title.
His career in motor racing spanned 30 years and took him from the lower categories to Formula 1, America and back again.
Mansell talks about his journey to becoming world champion, revealing previously unheard stories and anecdotes from his time as a racing driver.

Being Italian I can confirm we have great remembers of Nigel Mansell, those were the years with glory, hope and joy and Mansell just enhanced all of this.

I've literally just finished watching the whole 91 season then I stibled across this pod cast, I have a new found respect for Nigel 👍🏻top British driver, we should be very proud of him.

We didn't know it at the time but it was indeed a Golden Era - we'll never see the personalities or that type of racing ever again. 'Modern' F1 is a pale imitation in all respects in comparison, the only good thing in comparison probably is the fantastic safety we have nowadays.
He’s a great driver because he’s the 1992 f1 champion and then the 1993 indycar champion at the same time

Nigel was probably the best overtaker that F1 ever had(too many to mention - Piquet at Brands Hatch in 1986, the "dummy on Piquet" at Silverstone in 1987, the pass on Senna at Hungary in 1989, side by side with Senna at Spain in 1991). Not to mention to win in his maiden year in IndyCar in 1993. I actually think like another Williams driver(Alan Jones), he should of won more than one title.
I’m 52, I moved from England to Australia in 1984 - Nigel started with Williams 85 and I went to see him at the Adelaide F1 88 and 89 - he was my hero then and still is to this day.
Red 5 for ever i met Nigel a few times and he was genuinly a real nice guy,signed my stuff and looked at me when he shook my hand and thanked me for buying his book.a true gentleman,rare in most top sportsman these days.A true Legend and missed behind the wheel.
Brilliant entertainment. Nigel embodies all that is good about sportsmanship and determination to survive and do well for his family in a hugely competitive sport where the machinery largely dictates results. There won't be another character like this in F1!
I expected this to be interesting and entertaining, but my expectations got greatly exceeded, this is amazing.

The words from the late great James Hunt "and it's another new lap record for Nigel Mansell" had me as a lad , pinned to the seat .
Courage of a fighter pilot and stocious guile on and off track .He really showed his nervous human side for the first 20 mins , once the real talk started it was just as mesmerising as the old days on track. Good old Nige....
People seem to forget Nigel in the haul of F1 legends, he was unlucky quite a lot in his career he could have won the championship earlier than 1992 but regardless of that I just love how he never gave up and even raced when he really shouldnt after bad injuries. You dont see many Brits like him now, Hamilton obv the new generation of successfull Brits but I'd say Nigel was my hero back in the day as a kid I wanted to be him! what a driver and he's a top bloke too! likes a laugh which is refreshing :) always pranking! check out his interview with Barry Sheen and Damon Hill it was hilarious.

One of my all time favourite formula one drivers ever.The man is a true legend.
He is doing wonderful work these days with his charity, in educating young people to keep them out of prison for example.
He was my hero as a very young boy. Not as complete a driver as Prost, Senna, Piquet or Lauda, because he had no feel for politics. But for grit and racing ability, there was no-one better. Great driver and human being.
This guy beat Senna and Shcumacker more than once in his life, and that was at the end of his career.
I'm an Aussie, but Mansell is a ball buster of a driver, like Niki Lauda.

Great insight. A true legend. F1 have never been as exciting as the Mansell days. The guy has the biggest gonads in the history of the sport.
Don't forget James Hunt in the 70's. He was bonkers when it came to taking risks in the sport. Nevertheless, his driving was awesome, The duels between him and Niki Lauda were epic.
I lived it with him, so much so, that on race days I lost sweat, and my heart rate was off the scale. I watched him race in person several times around the world, and was never as proud to be an Englishman as in those times. I know the truth, and I won't hear a bad word said about him! Everyone will have their own favourite personality, but Nigel Mansell defined racing competition. Oh, and I believe he has the right to brag. Frank Williams once said "Nigel believes he is the best driver in the world, and it is appropriate that he does so". I agree with him.

Listening to Nigel tell the story about him breaking the track record at Silverstone by 2 seconds.. gave me goosebumps. I never got to watch Nigel race because I wasn't born until 1993 and I feel like I've missed out big time.
Nigel is a great person,I even said hello to him at the Adelaide Grand Prix in 1990,he was I think the only person to go from F1 to the cart driving in the US and be successfull,true grit racer.

I'm a latecomer to the brilliance of Red 5. What he did, especially with all of his injuries, in winning back-to-back F1 and IndyCar titles is something that it's safe to say will NEVER be repeated. To drive at that level in ENTIRELY different racing mediums, in Indy Champ cars that were technologically years behind, and to get comfortable with the incredible speed, raw danger, and exhausting torture tests that the IndyCar oval and 500 mile superspeedway races were at the time is an accomplishment so difficult it's almost impossible to grasp. I'm glad he's clearly enjoyed his post-racing years, he absolutely earned them.

In 1971, I was a television repair engineer, and I had call to a house in Horsforth - a suberb of Leeds. The name on the job sheet was Mr Mansell. I remember that the TV was a Decca Colour set. Two men were in the house, and as I was attending to the TV, there was chat. On the back wall was a huge photo of a racing car with all four wheels off the road. I must have asked what the chap sat closest to me what he did for a living. He turned, pointed to the photo, and rather arrogantly said, "THAT..!!" It wasn't until ten years later when I saw Nigel Mansell in an F1 car, that it dawned on me I'd repaired his TV.
1971 and in Leeds? Mansell wasn't racing in 1971 and didn't live in Leeds.
@@neilk1116 You're probably correct, because thinking about it, had it really been 'Nigel Mansell F1 driver', he would only have been 17 or 18 years old in 1971. However, the name 'Mansell' on my job sheet wasn't the only reason I'd remembered it. For some reason, the shop manager made specific reference to the job - emphasising 'Mr Mansell', and asking to be informed were I unable to fix the set. Such request was not normal, so that had also placed a memory marker on the event ... I even remember the address 'Newley Lane'. He said he raced at Croft. Oh well, some coincidence though, eh?
What wasn't just coincidence though, was speaking to Alan Jones, and Tiff Needell, at Oulton Park in around 1973/4. Although I didn't speak to him, another driver was Ian Ashley ... any others of note, I don't remember. Although, one of the other 'pre-fame' names I can't now recall, had a terrible accident at Brands Hatch, possibly in an F1 race. Tiff Needell was driving Formula Ford, Jones and Ashley were driving in new formula called 'Indilantic' in cars that looked not unlike F1cars. A point of some discussion and hilarity at the time - noted with a photograph in one of the motorsport magazines, was that one of the Indilantic cars was sponsored by 'Durex'. Another chance meeting was later at a special weekend event at Oulton Park that had the then F1 World Champion - James Hunt, as special guest. I just happened to spot him stepping out of a caravan in the paddock, and took the photo. Motorsport was so accessible back then.

Nigel doesn't need a presenter to keep the interview on track. He can give his own one man show just talking about his career, non scripted so it's different every time too.
He seems to be so relaxed and happy with things these days, which, apart from 1985-6, 1989 and 1991, he didn't seem to be during his career.
His charitable work with young children - no praise is too great. Great to see him doing so well.

Great man, Great stories.. Love the Colin Chapman Pail Ricard story.. I remember the late great Joey Dunlop talking about his TT victories.. You know your going as fast as possible because everything slows down and your in the zone. Must be amazing to expeience that.

The funniest part is. Mansell is a world champ thanks to Nelson Piquet. Mansell wanted to quit Active suspension testing in 87. Nelson insisted and rest is history.
That's a very far-stretched story. Mansell tested active suspension in the early 1980s with Lotus, when the available technology wasn't anywhere near powerful enough to operate active suspension, hence the car was very dangerous and failed all the time, sending the drivers off the road.
Lotus kept developing the system until 1987 when they first ran it. Williams under Frank Dernie also developed an active suspension system and ran it in 1987 with Piquet, who didn't have such bad memories with an active suspension system and just tried it.
However those "active suspension" systems weren't entirely active, it was nothing more than a platform control and couldn't really be altered while driving.
The system Williams developed for the FW14B worked totally different and had little in common to the system Williams ran in 1987 and 1988.

Piquet in his career tested far more often, from Brabham to Benneton. You think he never had bad experiences. Give me a break, Mansell was looking for an excuse, for his ineptitude and lazyness. Because he did not realize the potential .
Dernie worked a long time in active suspension project. Without successful win in Monza 87 and Piquet 's active support , Williams would scrap it, and did scrap the project.
This merely shows differences in character. Piquet was a hard working driver, willing to test anything , while Mansell was lazy leeching of work of others.

Genuine hero of mine while I was growing up (debatable) being a british 5-6 year old kid during his last F1 years (then having to go mow the front lawn immediately after the races), Playing PGA world tour on the sega megadrive as (against?) him and became a ford fan after seeing him in mondeo touring cars. Later I became a Coulthard fan or a Button fan but always had a great respect for Mansell and for a while I delivered books to his golf course just up the road, Always wanted to meet him and shake his hand for those fond years but likely never will.
Nigel... Finding a way to do an all time great interview faster than anybody! Just by answering all the question he knows they have. Brilliant

Fantastic stuff, always good to hear from a legend himself. Interviewers might of well have just been in the audience though, Nige really carried his own here.
Just spent an enthralling 80 minutes listening to the amazing challenges ‘Our Nige’ has overcome. He talks openly about the politics in F1 - and as true today, as then. We can do without the magic tricks though...

Yes, ‘Our Nige’ did great things even in bad cars...Schumacher and Hamilton never really had/have bad equipment, we would all love to see Lewis in the current Renault or Williams to prove his genius is genuine.
@@badgastein2 If hamilton wants to show his true skills, he'd leave mercedes for another team, and let fate do some work too, as all drivers have experienced. Mercedes has had the fastest car for years now.

43:00 it’s the brain’s Amygdala region that becomes active in situations that are stressful and/or dangerous.
Happened to me once when racing at Kyalami, and another time on the M25, at night in rain, avoiding cars that had stopped in the fast lane due to shunting.

Can you train that part of your brain to be more effective when racing.
I find it hard to find the limit when I’ve had heaps of late nights trying to get the car ready for the up coming race meet

I doubt it very much as mine where activated within split seconds of the danger appearing and seems to be part of the brains basic fight or flee response I think.
Maybe you haven’t experience a situation where danger activates that region of your brain.
It only happened to me that one time on track after thousands of laps.
I haven’t read about anyone else experiencing what I have, so cannot comment.
If you had to think about activating it, it would be far far too late as the crash would have happened by then then, as everything suddenly slows down and you appear to have all the time in the world to decide what to do.
Quite an experience to Sarah the least.
Kyalami:
Sunset Bend:
A long sweeping blind right hander, slight downhill and cut into the side of bank with a concrete wall on the right a few feet from the track.
Get this corner wrong and you had a 90% chance of writing your car off, either against that wall or rolling off down that slope, as I saw many times during my time as a Flag Marshall at Clubhouse Bend.
That concrete wall on the inside seemed to act like a magnet.
That wall nearly had me during a Saturday open practice.
Coming round flat as usual I either went in a tad too fast/missed apex by inches but that *#%* wall was saying 'Come To Me' as I went into a lurid slide/tank slapped pointing straight towards it!
Don't know if it's ever happened to anyone else, but in situations like this everything suddenly seems to slow down as the Amygdala area of the brain kicks, and to this day I remember the whole sequence:
"Oh f**k if I don't catch this slide I will have to spin the car to stop me hitting that wall!" arms all crossed up by then of course.
During marshalling I saw one driver freeze in the same circumstance and T-bone the wall writing off his lovely Alfa Coupe and another hitting the wall and then roll and end-over-end about six times, so I knew what would happen if I did nothing - one written of car!
Well the next thing I remember was the car rocking to a halt facing the wrong way towards the entrance to Sunset, so I obviously caught it but not the return spin
The M25:
I was in the fast lane of London’s ‘mobile car park’ it’s so busy, and seeing brake lights coming on and off in the distance and then all of a sudden a stationary car in the fast lane maybe 3 car lengths in front.
I knew immediately that I had not a hope in stopping in time on the wet road and everything suddenly slowed down once again and I had time to judge distances and noticed there was a gap between the car and the barrier on the inside just wide enough for my car.
I braked as hard as I possibly could without locking wheels and headed for the gap, it being just wide enough, and came to a stop with passenger door opposite the stopped car’s rear door.
The guy behind shot past me and rear ended the stopped car, he just clipping me as I dived for that gap.

I really miss times gone by, as much as I don't want to see drivers injured I still wish the cars and drivers were like those days, in both F1 and IndyCar
Mansell was fast and surely a brave man, but it's funny to listen to him talking about testing and car setup when he's infamous for hating testing and not giving that much attention to the technical aspect of F1.

The problem with Mansell, in my humble opinion based on reading others, is that his view of history is not always matched by the facts of that history. Great driver to watch, one of the most exciting and I would not take that from him, but his persona I have never been a fan. To be fair that has softened over time, but I just struggle with him.
Based on other interviews "his view of history" matches up pretty well with those. Patrick's recent interview and remarks about Mansell seem to mirror his in this interview.
Agreed. A great example being him talking about his debut, where he was attempting to qualify as one of 43 for 26 places in the race. Perhaps it's age, but Mansell was in car #43... but only one of 26 - rather than 43 - who took part in qualifying (no pre-qualifying for this race) for the 24-car grid. He did admirably qualify 24th.

@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 Even in his peak physical fitness I think he would have been not only too big for the car but also too unfit. The fitness of a modern driver far exceeds that of those who raced in the 80s and 90s. The G Forces these new cars will get is anywhere between 6-7G which is a pretty serious physical effort.
@@NippyMoto Manual gearbox, no power steering, 1500 bhp, rudimentary drink system (if at all), much thicker fireproof suit, very poor insulation between driver and engine... I'd bet they were super unfit dealing with all that

I hated Mansell growing up and was a huge Senna fan. Strangely when I got all the F1 seasons on archive from the early 80's until present day. The first thing I wanted to see was Nigel in the Ferrari. I do believe he was as good as anyone racing. He spoke of this in the interview but his weight cost him dearly. Imagine being half a second slower before you even turned a corner. So when he did beat someone like Senna, Prost ,Piquet or anyone else in the same car you know he was going stupidly quick! Shows how ballsy he was especially with his great overtakes. Nobody charged harder, nobody tried harder. Seeing him in action is mind blowing and shows what a real racer he was that he can change my mind from being hated to being a hero. He is without a doubt top 5 for me. Considering all his injuries and awful luck, I wonder what he would have achieved with everything going his way. The ultimate F1 racer

Nigel was a fantastic racer. But it is quite obvious why not a lot of people liked him. Strange man, and definitely hard to like. If you heard him talking before, that is.
Keke Piket Well said. He is a bizarre character and clearly drunk here. The motorsport press hated him and that hasn’t helped his reputation. But he was an incredible racing driver and unlucky not be be 2-3 times F1 champion.
I think its only a minority that dont like him the press loved him, the fans loved him and so did F1. Yeah he did have a moan at his team but he wanted the best out of the car and in the end he got it.
I think he wasn't liked by the F1 teams, mainly because he didn't play the game - he wasn't political like most of the top drivers and he was - and is - blunt and abrasive. However I lived through every second of his time in F1 and it's obvious that the fans loved him, British and Italians especially for obvious reasons, and certainly he made things happen. You were guaranteed fireworks with Mansell in your team. He was treated unfairly through his career as he wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth - remember Piquet's stupid comments about his background and his wife and children - and I think he knew it very well. The chip on his shoulder was well deserved

Almost my entire childhood was filled with weekends of my dad shouting ‘’Come on, Nige!” at the telly. I never knew he was such a class clown.
What he talks about at 42:00 for a few minutes, I have had that experience too. It's unreal.
