The reason the gameplay is so different is because of the weird history behind the game. Its actually a port of an arcade game called Strike Fighter, which was a sequel the arcade game G-LOC: Air Battle, which itself was a spiritual successor to After Burner II. The reason it's called After Burner III is just for brand recognition, even though its more of a port of the sequel to the spiritual successor of After Burner than it is a true sequel. IMO, I would say that Climax is the true AB3.
Yup, this is basically the sequel to G-Loc Air Battle, but with the After Burner name because G-Loc didn't exactly do well (and was a spiritual successor to After Burner as well). They REALLY did do an excellent job of producing the music, though. It's super hard to reproduce the overall feel of the crunchy synth the arcade cabinet had while tossing real instruments into the mix.
Yeah, I remember a friend having this game long ago; we expected it to be 90% as good as the arcade original; the music is 200% of the arcade, but the game play is less then 50%, CGR got it right on the money with this review.
This game is actually a home port of the arcade game G-LOC but not many knew about that game. More people knew the name "After Burner". There is even a fully rotatable arcade version called R-360.
Hmmm, I enjoyed Afterburner III and the cockpit view helped me get further along in this game than in any other Afterburner. The only problem I have with it is that the machine guns are basically pointless.
@Tricob1974 I had the same reaction also, although I mostly liked the music. I already had After Burner 2 on the Genesis, and after getting a SegaCD I was really eager for this version. Instead I found the old Genesis cart was more fun. Sheesh, what a waste. I was equally disappointed with several SegaCD games actually, until I became disillusioned with Sega and got into PC games. I never bought any later Sega systems, this was the time period when they lost me.
It's a shame this game isn't better, considering how cool the scaling & rotation games on other SEGA CD games are - like on Batman Returns, for instance.
Great review Mark; Absolutely spot on. I'd rather play the AfterBurner knock-off on Action 52 (Genesis version) than this. (Not that the knock off was horrible, it was just yawn inducing)
@TheThomasTT So, it wasn't just Air Combat (PS1) that was annoying with its voices! Then again, Air Combat's voice are even MORE annoying! Just a graze from machine gun fire makes the game say "ALERT! BODY DAMAGED!" Five times! At first, I thought your comment was an Air Combat reference (Read the comments before watching the vid!) because it never shuts up with the "Bogey on your tail!" and "BINGO! YAHOO!"
Mark reacted the same as I when I first started up the game. Drop-dead awesome intro, great Level 1 intro, and then the game's brought down by bland desert scenery, and a game engine so stripped down, it fails to immerse the player like AB2 did. I'm one of the few who didn't like the music as well. To me, the tunes sounded like they were remixed for some 1990s TV cop show. :-/
It's basically G-LOC for the SEGA CD. That isn't an After Burner game! It would be better if they just said that. I loved G-LOC. The Genesis game for G-LOC was really good too.
ab 3 for the Mega CD is mostly criticised for the-allegedly-weak graphics.But ,let me tell you-this game had such an awesome music and dialogs -even with a black screen instead of graphics it would ve been an absolute "must have"!
Sega has messed up a lot with the sega32x and segacd "experiment" when they could have focused on the Saturn project.....what's the point in doing an old console expansion in 1993 when the new console is coming out next year. I really loved SEGA in the Dreamcast years, but in 1993 it was kinda screwed up, worst than today's nintendo.
Between this game, night trap, and bram stokers dracula I thought the Sega CD was one of the worst systems ever. Then you see all the special edition genesis games with extra content like earthworm jim and ecco 2 and there's rpg's like Lunar with actual voice acting and Sonic CD (i.e. sonic 4) and and and and....

I like how the intro mentions the 'million dollar missiles', and then lets you never stop shooting them. It's a dream come true!

I am very gratefull that you find the time to do all this video reviews
AFTERBURNER CLIMAX FTW
This game has great music. If i ever would get a Sega CD i am gonna get this game for sure!
Download Afterburner Climax on XBLA, it's pretty much the perfect Afterburner game.

@housam7
If he stopped reviewing old games there would be no reason for this channel to exist, it is called CLASSIC Game Room after all
The voice over of Afterburner II is Ron David, the same narrator of the TV Program of Discovery Channel: WINGS
Best part of this game is the music, its so damn good!
Must have been -so- cool to play this back in '92 =D
This video brought to you by "Mark has fun wit the sound test menu!"
+Boj Osborne WOO!
@1shoryuken this was actually realeased in the japanese arcades as Strike Fighter
that was the most awesome intro I heard in ages
I suggest some hardstyle instead of DnB.
You should make a video showing where you have all of your games and stuff
This game is a port of a Japanese-only arcade release called Strike Fighter, which in itself is a sequel to G-LOC Air Battle.
I would watch a CGR After Burner 3 sound test megamix for about three hours before I clicked away.
PUMP UP THE JAM,PUMP IT UP WHILST YOUR FEET ARE STOMPIN'!
You should be able to put that CD in any cd player and listen to the music. The game itself is track one I believe.
l didn't even know their was an After Burner III, l never came across it in the arcades.
i love how you give attention to old games, this is one of my favorite channels
Hmmm, I enjoyed Afterburner III and the cockpit view helped me get further along in this game than in any other Afterburner. The only problem I have with it is that the machine guns are basically pointless.
OMG LARRY FROM FINLAND!!
Opr is it Lauri...?
I like the part when he says FIRE FIRE FIRE!!!
I think we found some new CGR music.
Seems like Viral Dog finally learned to say: "BINGO!"
Love the music
Thanks to this review I have the urge to listen to some OC Remixes.
@Tricob1974

Gee, I looked it up and it is only for the Sega Mega CD eh?
The Enemy! Bingo, Woo! On your tail!
@jopeteus It's Lauri.
It's a shame this game isn't better, considering how cool the scaling & rotation games on other SEGA CD games are - like on Batman Returns, for instance.

Good review - thanks
@S0ryiu
Watch the video all the way to the end.
The game actually exists.
The clarification is needed.

it's like watching a circus act with showmusic... wheres the lion and whip
It's basically G-LOC for the SEGA CD. That isn't an After Burner game! It would be better if they just said that. I loved G-LOC. The Genesis game for G-LOC was really good too.
@Danny77uk Lol, reminds me of one of AVGN's NES accessories!
Subscriber Request: Review MTV Music Generator for Playstation 1. It will cater to your inner German Techno DJ (don't lie, we all have one).

Afterburner 2 for life, your favourite song pick is disappointing though.

the last minute was better than any dubstep song.

I also love super stripe!! All versions. but still after burner ^_^
FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!
After Atari (which will never ever happen again), I wish SEGA would just for the love of all that is game holy, return to making game consoles. :(
@TheThomasTT
ON YOUR-ON YOUR-ON YOUR-ON YOUR-ON YOUR-THE ENEMY
million dollar missiles? since when the fuck did we get those
ab 3 for the Mega CD is mostly criticised for the-allegedly-weak graphics.But ,let me tell you-this game had such an awesome music and dialogs -even with a black screen instead of graphics it would ve been an absolute "must have"!
@MegaDerek2011 10 years? You serious?
@Bastylax86 Nintendo is cutting it close though.
If you just want to listen to the music, put the disc in a regular CD player

FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE
3:55 SO. TAIGHT. FUNK! Rip it please! :D
Imagine playing this with the konami superscope if it could be used for the genesis...
I had this piece of crap in my collection for years and didn't quite know why I could never get into it. Thanks for the validation lol
woo woo woo wooo bingo wooo woo woo the enemy bingo!
It's crazy how the designers made it look much duller than the previous versions... After Burner 2 looks much nicer.
its like g-lock airbattle
DJ MARK!
WHAT'S YOUR NAME!??
the background looks like it belongs to a atari 2600 game,only three collors.
I'll say 1994
The intro song you use where can I get it I WANT IT DAMNIT ! I`ll make a new channel and subscribe if you tell me ;D
why couldn't the top Gun game be half as good as After Burner 3?
so you CAN actually listen to the music without having to play the game.
Bingo the enemy on your tail
do a barrel roll....oh wait!
Between this game, night trap, and bram stokers dracula I thought the Sega CD was one of the worst systems ever.

That's one bitchin' soundtrack.
