Lassie - Episode # 468 - "The Lonely One"- Season 14, Ep. 21 - 2/4/1968468

Part 1 of a 3 part theme: Ranger Corey and Lassie are at Cape Kennedy as Corey participates in a parachute-testing project as well as visiting his old smoke-jumping buddy Chuck Conway who is now an astronaut. During their testing Lassie, who is waiting for Corey to return to the truck, sees Atlas, a guard dog gone wild after the death of his handler. She goes over to make friends but the dog rebuffs her. However, when he gets stuck in quicksand, he looks to the ever resourceful Lassie to rescue him.
This, and the next two episodes, all take place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. When the series was broadcast, it was almost 10 months to the day that the first manned space flight would send astronauts in an orbit around the moon. It is interesting to look back 50 years to the computers, the programs, and the technology in place during the Space Race to put US astronauts on the moon.
