  • Thanks for watching my video. Let me know which other three houses characters you'd like me to analyze and I'd be happy to do it. And feel free to let me know what you thought of this video. Before making this analysis Claude was my least favorite of the three lords, but I think I've gained a new appreciation for him after looking deeper into him.

    I hope your analysis makes it clear to some people that Claude/ Khalid is actually a very complex and well written character.
    Personally I really got hit by his greatness after I was upset about how the S-support with him was written. Being mad about "why he can't just marry you already" really made me think about his character more. Looking at it now I love Claude even more for this "unsatisfying" S-support. It really shows that he will put his ambitions and dreams above everything else. He is genuinely concerned about his people in Almyra and him following his dreams doesn't end with the end of the war. Yes, he probably wanted to stay with Byleth and he also had the opportunity to become Fodlan's Ruler on the spot, but he pushed his own desires aside and thought, once again, of how he could make the biggest change in the world possible for him. The game doesn't exactly tell you if Claude and Byleth ever marry or if he gets to rule both Fodlan and Almyra or if he manages to form "the ultimate Alliance" and honestly it doesn't matter because once you realize how far Claude is really willing to go for his dreams his character development is complete and I'm sure that he could probably achieve anything he wanted at that point.

      Definitely, before making this I thought that Claude had significantly less depth than Edelgard and Dimitri. But now I appreciate him a lot more as a character, its just a shame that he doesn't get as many characterization moments as the other two, due to his route being heavy on plot.

    • @DirectionerLise
      @DirectionerLise 4 года назад +29

      I think their S-Support is actually pretty good. He can't stay because if he does, Almyra could attack Fodlan and Fodlan is, as he says, "fragile" (of course he also leaves to make his dream become true, i'll come back to that later).
      Claude decides to definitely stop wearing a mask in front of Byleth and tells her what he thinks and what he used to think (and that's something unique coming from him, which is romantic in its own way) . This sentence sums up and gives a pretty conclusion to his whole support chain with Byleth "I realized what I really wanted was to see that new world... with you by my side".
      The end of the support is always pretty sweet, he tells her that he loves her and he also tells her that "the next time [they] see each other... it will be at the dawn of a whole new world. A peaceful, happy world." which also shows how important Byleth became in the accomplishment of his dream - he who was acting on his own at the begining, trusting no one. He doesn't see the end of the war as an end but as a start and he genuinely wants to see this new start with Byleth at his sides.
      Then we have the blurbs of the credits. Let's compare two blurbs : the blurb when he doesn't marry to anyone and the blurb when he marries to Byleth :
      In his solo ending, he becomes "a politically active prince" // with Byleth he becomes " the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan" => His character arc is only complete with Byleth's love, I think it's really cute.
      In his solo ending "Under his guidance, the peoples of Fódlan and Almyra were finally able to set aside age-old prejudices" // while when he comes back to help Byleth, they "herald a new age of unity" => There again, he only achieves his dream with Byleth. In addition, even if it's not textually written, I'm pretty sure that the word "unity" implies they marry.
      Also in his paired ending with Marianne, it is said that "Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open trade routes with Fódlan", in his paired ending with Hilda, it is said that "When he became king several years later, he made the surprise announcement that he would make Hilda his queen", with Flayn that "Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open diplomatic relations with Fódlan" and with Shamir that "Some years later he became king".
      So in all the endings that mention the time he took to become king, he takes several years. But in his ending with Byleth, he only takes month to come back, which shows how deeply he loves her and want to see her again (and I'm pretty sure he married her, the word unity suggests that and this is an S-Support, the developers have no reason to not make them marry. So I don't think writing it textually is needed).

    Verdant Wind is my fav. No bias since Azure Moon was my first. Even though i think all of the Lords are great characters theres just something about Claude that i vibe with the most. Also i just find that seeking the truth and true history is very satisfying for me and the Golden Deer paralouges help this alot too.

      I thought that finding the truth in the verdant wind route was awesome too, I couldn't help but get hyped on the final mission of the route. Even though azure moon is my favorite because of the character's relationships, verdant wind is probably my second favorite.

    Claude’s goal compared to the other lords is more ambitious. I don’t if that is better. He aims for something alike edelgard, but including other countries and less violence

    your analysis videos are so underrated! really enjoyed your take on claude. He's one of my favorite characters in three houses and one of my favorite house leaders because he's such a complex and interesting main character while also being a poc. poc aren't often show in such a great light like Claude is and the contrast of his ideals and his realistic world view is just so intersting.

      Claude in GW i think is more of "what happened if claude never met professor byleth" situation. Because in three houses, rhea favors byleth so much that rhea becomes an important person to byleth to uncover who they really are, and claude (presumably he originally also has the same goal like in GW where he wanted to kill rhea) can't help but had to try other way to dismantle the church's power since he adores byleth so much as a fellow outsider and as a teacher. And on top of that, he often ask byleth for guidance and ideas in his route
      So it's really interesting to see claude in GW where he actively act on his accord and plan the schemes on his own that he doesn't care even if he had to sacrifice someone for his goal or if he had to betray his own ally in SB. He's really cunning and ruthless in GW more than in VW and i think it's interesting how one person can singlehandedly changed a person's path
      (Also worth thing to mention, i think the scene where claude kill shahid really fucks with him mentally that the aftermath of that event lead to what claude became in GW)

    I think you missing some parts for Edelgard; how Edelgard had approached Claude during white clouds(GD) at the end of chapter 5: Tower of Black Winds on his identity and how he came out of nowhere, and in Crimson Flower on how he dealt with the Empire wining whether you killed him or not.
    Also, Lorenz's reaction of the Alliance disbandment and reabsorption back into the Kingdom in Azure Moon really troubled him, and to be honest with you it did seemed rushed compared to the Alliance loss in Crismon Flower.
    So far your video is pretty well done.

      Thanks for the feedback! Yeah there's still different routes to explore with the lords because there's a lot of depth to their characters so I could definitely make a follow up some time exploring some ideas that I didn't home in on here.

      @basilofgoodwishes4138 4 года назад +2

      With Crimson Flower, his faith in a better Fódlan has been destroyed by Edelgard, which is why we see Nader later attacking Fódlan. He lied to her about how he hopes that the future she creates is a better one and how he wanted to conquer it himself.

    • @theforgottenone8384
      @theforgottenone8384 4 года назад +2

      @@basilofgoodwishes4138There is no confirmation that Claude has taken over Almyra after being spared in CF and ordering Nader to attack Fodlan's Throat. Also, Almyra forces have a history in attacking Fodlan's throat in the purpose of testing their strength and with Claude no longer in a position of power in Fodlan allowing Almyra to do such attacks again.
      While you can say that Claude's faith in a better Fodlan was destroyed by Edelgard and lied to Edelgard of his hope for her and his own ambition but you have to remember what Claude's goal was and what risk he took a while talking to Edelgard and Byleth after the battle.
      Claude's dream of better relationships with other nations as Fodlan in its current state in the center of the world blocks any potential for that. For Claude, he needed that goal to be achieved if that meant that he had to start a war and become the supreme ruler of Fodlan then he would have done it but luckily he didn't have to thanks to the Byleth's efforts in each route.
      At the end of The Master Tactician chapter in CF, would he really lie to Edelgard as he makes a huge risk to his ambitions to go to see them? No, I believed that he was honest with them for the sake of his ambitions as it would do poor to him as the future king of Almyra to have bad blood with Fodlan's leadership.

    • @basilofgoodwishes4138
      @basilofgoodwishes4138 4 года назад +7

      @@theforgottenone8384 You also have no evidence for the contrary, he can still become a King and order an attack to test the Empire or even provoke them, do you have any evidence that he does not become king? Your analysis also ignores that Claude, quite frankly doesn't need to be king, in order to send his retainer Nader in there to attack Fódlan's throat, since he is the Prince of Almyra and has a lot of influence that could enable him to convince his father to not attack. The fact, that Nader's attack on Fódlan's throat happens after Claude left the Alliance gives me Strong hints, that it had everything to do with Edelgard's invasion, because now they border a more Militaristic Country than the last. Speaking about his Father, why doesn't he declare war on the Empire when you murder Claude? Doesn't he care about his own son dying in a Foreign land, that land being the land of the Enemy? Thank you, you just have shown me another plot hole in CF, we should have more Almyra in the story. Also even in GD, when he is still in the Alliance, attacks on Fódlans throat still happened, until he united both forces with his scemes to bring down Fort Merceus, so I don't see why you think that Claude has no saying in Almyra?
      Claude's goal is to unite the two Countries and break down the seperation caused by the Borders, but not through warfare, but through Diplomacy and Cultural trade, not through Conquest as he was disgusted by Edelgard's excessive Violence in GD, because he doesn't believe that this much bloodshed is needed, hence why he never ever attempts to expand his territory in all the 4 routes. He only conquers Adrestia as a retaliation for their attempted conquest and was defensive in Nature. So the idea that he would start warfare for his ideals is contradicted by his actions in all routes, even his ending doesn't have him annex territories.
      My argument is even more correct and clear by the simple fact, that Azure Moon exist. In Azure Moon, he voluntarily gives the Alliance to Dimitri, after his scheme to trick Thales to his own Demise worked and even gives Dimitri his most valuable Weapon, while he does not in CF, why though? Simply because he trusts Dimitri more than Edelgard, because he is more benevolent and less likely to provoke more expansions than Edelgard, after everything she has done in CF. That's why Edelgard's paralouge happened, because any chance with a Peaceful has passed with Edelgard's new Empire, because an Empire is an institution that needs to use Military powers to assert itself and would be like an elephant near your house, a big thing that could kill you, but doesn't have to be needlessly cruel and is possible to be interested into society. This does not happen in CF, as Edelgard's Empire is founded under the myth of Humans uniting against Gods and the believe that Military rule can bring peace which could influence later Emperors to expand Adrestia's territory. No matter how much Edelgard stupidly insists that the lack of faith in Sothis's teachings would be enough to make peace, despite the fact, that the Almyrans never ever used religion to justify warfare, so because under that pretense cannot work.
      Claude is also an gambler and he hoped by creating an all deciding battle in Derdrui, he could end the war, his capitulation was just a back up plan to make the integration of the Alliance into the Empire easier. Do I think he would lie? ABSOLUTELY. He never brought a large army of Almyrans in any route, only Nader's small army and he never ever rules over Fódlan in any routes and his lie was there to make them feel less bad to have defeated the Alliance. It ended with Edelgard being confused about his motives and conceding, that she doesn't get him.
      He was never the Conqueror, but the Unifier via Diplomacy and Cultural and intellectual prowess.
