I just had this done today. Was about the fourth time I've had this procedure done, and always with great results. I trust my rheumatologist completely, and although it is an uncomfortable procedure to have done, the end results are so worth it! I feel like a normal person again, and not just some schlug living with chronic pain. Chronic pain can be so debilitating and depressing.
In the last 13 years I've had over 20 steroid injections in my shoulder, shots as well as ultrasound guided ones. I have had varying degrees of success with pain and inflammation. They are probably some of the most painful injections, with the exception of the ones into my thumb for arthritis. It's nice to see a doctor explaining and telling the patient step by step,
I really appreciate how you describe why you do everything. I am an LPN but I never knew before that letting Betadine dry on the skin is better sterilization. I can tell you really like teaching people! Thank you so much!
Is there a reason why you do not mix the anesthetic with the steroid in the same syringe? I have always seen providers do the same syringe and I was curious about your rationale as I am always wanting to learn a better way.
+Barbara NewAGNP-PC there's potential for some of the steroid to be deposited in the skin as the needle is withdrawn if the needle is not flushed free of steroid before withdrawing from the skin. Leaving steroid in the track could cause atrophy and discoloration of the skin at that location. It is a very low risk.
I have to get these shots in both hip joints and my right shoulder joint from time to time. My sweet doctor has never done anything but wipe the site with alcohol? Do you think maybe there is something to prevent pain in the shot also? It never hurts.
I dislocated and fractured my shoulder about 7 months ago. The fracture is healed but I still have lvl 10 pain instantly and for days after I try to throw a softball from 3rd to 1st resulting in my throw not even making it to 1st. Will this make it so I can throw the ball pain free?

I've had two injections(guided) into the heel of my right foot for (planta fasciitis), most pain I've ever felt in my life!!!

Why I was given Anesthesia for this procedure?
I need one of these but can you confirm that it doesnt in fact cure the problem it just masks the pain for a peroid of time?
It depends on the anatomy. It can fix many.
