This was the BEST vlog! I’m a third grade teacher in Georgia. I love how you showed content and how you teach it. Please do more! I need all the help I can get! 👍
As someone who is not in the education field, I just felt the need to tell you what you're doing is amazing. Education is one of the most important fields we have and you are making such a difference in the lives of your kids. I constantly think about how amazing it is that someone took time out of their day to teach me how to read, write, add/subtract, etc. These are skills that are so important in our every day lives and they would not be possible without people like you. Thank you for being a teacher!
I 10000000% agree with you about the worksheets! It's totally ok to do worksheets especially when teaching foundational skills because there IS learning happening. I remember when I taught 3rd grade ( it was my 1st year teaching) my principal got so upset I used a worksheet and I literally CRIED! I had to break down multiplication to my kiddos that were struggling and the worksheet helped them with a strategy and I felt awful. But honestly in the end, it helped them. Do what you feel works for your kids. You seem like such a caring teacher and those kids are lucky to have you sis! I hope you have an amazing year and sorry for the longggg comment lol!!
I LOVE your sticky note regrouping visual. Shout out from a fellow Nor Cal teacher. I LOVE your videos and can't wait for your Back to School videos and classroom tours.
Thank you for your honesty about planning. I’m a junior in college (Early Ed major!) and we have lesson plans as assignments and for Clinicals, we have to have submit a whole math unit plan on Tuesday that we’re teaching starting the middle of April. I’m not a procrastinator, but I can’t plan weeks out (both ways stress me out!). Thank you for being open about how sometimes it’s okay to plan day of (not that my professors would like me to do that!), it actually made me relax a little.
!!! So I am at uni studying to become a teacher and for this year's "teaching math" subject my current assignment I'm working on involves us searching for activites to help with 'trusting the count' and 'place value' for a particular child we have gone and interviewed. Both the food tray and sticky note ideas are fantastic!! Im adding them in! Thank you!
i think worksheets are good for students who are visual learners and need to do the actual work themselves to understand it better. they’re also good for review or to see where the student is and know if they need extra help.
Thanks for keeping it real! Sometimes life happens and it is what it is....I've had those kinds of days...come in and have no idea what I am going to do for the day...doesn't happen often...but it does!!
Hey! I teach writer’s workshop in grade 3 too. Do you have Lucy calkin’s books? We just literally follow them and finished session 3 last week (which was brainstorming places to write a small moment about - with an introduction to dialogue opening up the small moment - if possible). We go through what she says, from The mini lesson with me modeling and then they go to their seats for the practical work. Ideally they will brainstorm for 10-15 min and then choose a small Moment to write about. I’m ordering ‘ish’ now! Thanks for the recommendation!! 👍🏻👍🏻
This is how I do writers workshop 1. 10 minute lesson- a skill that is relevant to what we are learning (e.g. putting commas in sentances). Occasionally they'll get a pop quiz afterwards with 3 questions and they'll have to apply the skill. I try to pull sentances from students writing to use as questions. OR 30 minute lesson- a new unit/new type of writing, etc. 2. 20-35 minute writing block 3. 10 minute reflection- Students will discuss either in small groups or as a class, their writing pieces, and how they incorporated the new skill in their work. They'll take notes on how their peers did it differently than them, including examples, so that they can try it a different way sometime.
We just got done with regrouping last week!! It’s so neat to see how things are taught in different states. For Georgia, in 3rd grade we are not allowed to teach the standard algorithm. We have to teach multiple strategies and the kids have to figure out which strategy works best for them, like which is most logical and something they can explain.
My planning is first block, so I often do my prep for the day during that time. I feel like my “thrown together” lessons sometimes go better because I didn’t have time to fixate over every detail!
Hi from Australia! Love those plates! If anyone knows somewhere online that I get them (that ships internationally) would love to see that. Also definitely getting that book. Loving this series ❤️
I am currently a senior in an elementary education program in Minnesota, and we are currently discussing the readers and writers workshop. If you would like more information I would suggest looking into the research of Fountas and Pinnell. Their text gives very in depth information on exactly how writers workshop can be done! From what you describe, it sounds very similar to their workshop model, so I would recommend looking into their research if you have the time and want more info on the workshop model.
I’ve just been assigned to teach a class of 3rd and 4th grade boys once a week at church. So far, my only experience is babies and preschoolers. These bigger kiddos are wild! I’m trying to figure out how to reign them in!
If your struggling with teaching writing, Check out the program picturing writing. It is AMAZING. You can find info online bout it but it combines art with writing. I use it with my 3rd graders and across the board they love it and all levels can produce something. They get a beautiful work of art that they made and a peice of writing they’re proud of. There re trainings for it to.
I’m a homeschooler of a third grader and I LOVE that summarizing little worksheet! Great idea and easy to teach. How much writing do your little guys do in the beginning if 3rd grade and then in the end?
Love 💗 your videos. Where did you get the rainbow 🌈 picture on dark background behind you? I swear if I didn’t know that you were new to the profession I would swear you were a teaching coach. Because of YOU my classroom decorating is awesome this year!!! Thank you 🙏 so much. I feel good and have hope. Now Working on being more organized (watching you) Is teaching text annotation using a 1-2 pg story with highlighters or colored pencils too advanced? At least they can “talk back” to the text OR Have them do a double entry journal 📓 where you model how to do it and then let them comment on something silly or exciting in the text and then write their excited responses in the correct column. Just a thought🤷🏾♀️
I use worksheets when my students need to practise a skill that's just what needs to happen. Sometimes a worksheet is the thing that will get them to just keep practising. Like you, I don't use them often, but I also don't think they should be eliminated. They have a place amongst a whole bunch of options that we have at our disposal.
I teach 3rd grade as well and we have a writing workshop every Friday. My writing workshop gives the students a chance to apply all the skills they learned in English and apply it to their writing. I give them a title and they write a story using the skills we just learned.
This year I'm trying to implement more student inquiry especially in math. Do you know of any good resources that can help with that? I loved the example you gave with the place value blocks!
How’s that app video coming? Don’t get me wrong, I love these. I love to get a look at what you and the kids are working on. I’m just curious about the app that your school uses.
Hi! I am a teaching intern in a first grade classroom and we also do morning meetings. I was wondering what your thoughts are on them and if you think they are beneficial for your students?
@earlyedventures are you still at the same school that you were at last year. The class room that you are in this year is so much nicer (not saying last years was bad,)
I am in my first year of middle school so 6th grade and I have been in school for 4-5 weeks and I have had a sub teacher for my ya every day so I have not met my teach yet lol but she got a concussion so ☹️ :(
We do writer's workshop in my district. A big word of advice, which it seems you are already doing is, model, model, model. Whatever you want your students doing take the time to actually show them what it looks like.
I am a first year teacher in 6th grade and I am so at that point of planning day of. That’s totally not me but it’s been stressful especially not feeling like I have a lot of support from my team. Any advice? I went to the principal after 6 weeks of only getting destructive criticism and now they all just don’t really speak to me at all.
+Early EDventures Well Mrs. Shelley , Do what you can not what you can't . When you try to do everything at once you wind up getting so overwhelmed that it turns into nothing being done . - Dwight
I love your vlogs! I also teach addition and subtraction separately. It makes more sense to the children. Your 1,000,000 percent correct that the skills are lifetime skills!
1982 3rd grade was cool. I got my first girlfriend in the third grade. My teacher was old. she was hard of hearing, and we could get away with whispering. My friend Frank, Deanna and I would stay after school and help her clean up. I miss those days
Have you heard of Adrienne Gear? She is very popular in bc Canada. She has a book called writing power that lays out specific lesson. Is it was many classrooms follow. Let me know if you have any questions :)
Do you plan as a team? Our school is really strict about grade levels planning as a team. Our principal wants each teacher of the same grade to be doing the same thing.
Thank you for another great video. I especially like what you showed about math. How's Trigger? All 4 of our border collies had their birthdays this month. My daughter got a cake for them and gave them each a small piece. They loved it! Check out this video a fellow teacher posted on Facebook. I think it's so funny. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=480666755785986&id=1791124681204937
At least to me, “I can summarize of stories I read” doesn’t sound grammatically correct. Wouldn’t it be “I can summarize stories I read” OR “I can provide a summary of stories I read,” or something along those lines.

I recommend The No-Nonsense Guide to Teaching Writing, any of Barry Lane's books, and The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing.

Ahh! Our district HATED envision! We switched to go math last year. Take out what you don’t need and definitely focus on the important parts!
I feel you on that day-by-day planning! It's my first year teaching and I usually have no idea what I'm doing the next day haha
So many great things happening in your classroom!

I so need to find that plate for my daughter to help her understand the 100’s, 10’s, and 1’s.
it's in the target kitchen area!
I love using 6 Traits. Great for beginning of the year and teaching steps of WW.

Should try squiggle writing. Find it on TPT. Fun and creative way to incorporate imaginative drawing and story telling
I am currently making a teacher channel and I’m super inspired!

Hi! I am a teaching intern in a first grade classroom and we also do morning meetings. I was wondering what your thoughts are on them and if you think they are beneficial for your students?
Im obsessed with them!! I go deep into morning meetings in the blog I just posted!
Aww you didn't talk about morning meeting. Also good luck with the writers workshop. I know you'll do great.
I know I totally forgot!! I will do it in the next one, promise!!

Julia Ibarra wait it is, what did I say? Lol
Ummm....I thought I wanted to be a teacher but now I realize that I definitely don't want to have to do all that 😅 I'm tired just watching...
Haha yep! Definitely not cut out for everyone!
At least to me, “I can summarize of stories I read” doesn’t sound grammatically correct. Wouldn’t it be “I can summarize stories I read” OR “I can provide a summary of stories I read,” or something along those lines.
Frida Garcia yes I caught that after I filmed it 😂 thanks!
I kid do not

When she said these ones I cringed so badly. Like no hate or anything at all but grammatically correct it’s these not these ones
