Many of us don't have room in our shops to have a separate Assembly Table, Outfeed Table, and Woodworking Bench. And we are always short of storage in our woodshops. This table is a request from several of my Patreon members and followers of the channel.
    Why a Torsion Box?
A Torsion Box is a method to create a table top that cannot bend, flex, or warp in any way. And above all else to be perfectly flat. And that’s really it. The ultimate goal is simply to have an unchanging laser-flat surface.
With that we can now use it to assemble and build our furniture. The surface becomes a reference surface since it is perfect. We can check square from it, and parallel from it. And it makes assembly much easier and much more accurate. It enhances all aspects of a furniture build and becomes the focal point of both the assembly phase, and nearly all aspects of your woodworking.
People asked me if I had a video of my old torsion box assembly table. I didn’t. So I decided that this is a must do project. And probably the most requested project I’ve ever done. I sent out questions to see what people would like. I tried to combine all of those with my thoughts and create something that could take on many sizes. I designed this in 3 different table sizes with full plans for each. A Full Size 4’ x 8’ Table, A Mid-Size 3-1/2’ x 7’ Table, and A Smaller 3’ x 6’ Table.
It’s an upgradeable tool for the workshop. The Extreme Torsion Box Assembly Table can start out in life very simply. I’ve engineered the leg assemblies in such a way that you can start with just the basic leg unit and the torsion box top and have a fully functional assembly table. Then as time goes on, you can upgrade by adding cabinetry. You can do it with shelves or even cabinet doors. Then as time and finances permit, you can push it to the extreme and add a bench vise, with bench dog holes, full drawers and even clamp racks at the ends. This will help break the cost of the project down into thirds. And it’ll let you upgrade whenever your needs change to warrant it.

James, a wonderful video. I have a 4 x 8 table saw table with a router lift setup at the other end, but I need to upgrade both the saw and table, and I probably will purchase a router table. Bottom line, I am thinking about making your assembly table and torsion box. You and your family do amazing work. Congratulations.

I have just finished watching all 4 parts, This is not a work bench this is a piece of ART. I am a novice woodworker so please could you explain or demonstrate ALL the features one by one, even the ones you think are inconsequential. Keep in mind I am a complete novice to woodwork but I am trying to get started. Like how do the holes work on the top and on the sides. Why are the tracks there and how do you use them? A video showing what is a torsion table is and why is it so integral in wood working would be so cool I know there are a lot of beginners getting started that would love to see a video on how the table all works?

    Dear James,
How refreshing it is to see women doing what was once a predominantly man's sphere. To see them turning ( & with great skill I may add), routing & beyond, drilling & fastening stuff together. I admire parents whose bonds & relationships with their children is such that there is a closeness that one seldom sees anymore. Your work table is exceedingly well built, well executed & finished thanks to your skilled & dedicated family team. One wonders what other awesomeness will rise from this table. very well done to you all. Kind regards.

Instead of the guide board on the end you could have chalk lined the path for the dog holes and put a witness mark on the far end of your jig. Either way, beautiful work man. And it's awesome that you involve your family, they're learning very valuable skills thanks to you.

Hi James, I do enjoy the projects you share with us. Thanks so much. Although this project is a couple years old, I have most all of your videos. I must tell you that I have watch the series on this table 10+ times as I have compared and contrasted the torsion style to many others for my latest assembly table. I decided to go with the torsion style you showed in the end. Just finished it this weekend. My is nowhere near as loaded as yours, but I'm in a much smaller shop and that brought on some special challenges. In the end, I think I will enjoy this one for years to come. Thanks again!

Too bad I recently discovered this channel. I have built an assembly table that works but I needed to build another table as outfeed for my homemade tablesaw. If I did something like this, I wouldn't have to and get my space back. I've a pretty small workplace so probably end up rebuilding some stuff. I like your explanations and calm voice. Keep up the good work!

You are a great teachers and well thought out explanation of all the steps. I have been in manufacturing of RVs for many years. in years gone by say the 50s and 60s we made real cabinets not just paneling and plastic film wrapped cabinet faces. Like your youngest daughter I started very young. Its a great skill that no one can take away from you.
It is art in wood and you are a master.
    Thank You

very thorough build, watched all 4 episodes. Fantastic results and I did learn alot - blind dove tail drawers- I have the exact same porter cable jig you show. Thank you for taking time to explain each step. Man with that kind of help around the shop you can take on much larger projects vs working alone. I found the process about making the top flat very interesting- using boat building technique. Your helpers are becoming highly skilled wood workers with a great instructor to teach them the techniques.

An outstanding piece of shop furniture. I like your jig for drilling dog holes. That’s something I’ll need to make once I get to that point in the workbench I’m making. Your idea of finishing up with a drill for dog holes that go all the way through the bench should work. I also like the idea of using paste wax to keep glue from sticking to the bench. I have seen others do that but if it works with all the glue you use on your projects it’s definitely worth a try on my assemble table. I fully agree on your use of lacquer for shop furniture because, as you said, it’s easy to apply and easy to repair. I’ve been using Deft for at least 55 years, but here in California I can now only get it in spray cans. Our government has banned non-water base lacquer in cans. Even though I have an HVLP sprayer I can’t use Deft in it.

Hopefully you will send pictures of your build. I am looking forward to seeing them. I have heard that about California - a lot of chemicals can't be used there. It's probably a good thing.

King's Fine Woodworking I’m working on making a video of the workbench build for my RUclips channel. I’m sure that it won’t be as polished as your build videos but I think I’m doing enough different things that people will get something out of it once it’s done. Yes, it may be good that we’ve eliminated a lot of chemicals out here but at 71 it’s hard to change to a different finish after using it for so long.

    Thank you sir,
looks amazing. I just hope once again the FAA looks into this build for ideas on future runways.
looking forward to the next build, and if that Assembly Table just happens to just up and leave please do not look my way. LOL.

Haha. Thank you! I would chain it down so it doesn't disappear in the night, but it is so heavy that if someone can manage to steal it, they've earned it, haha.

What a great build series and a really solid assembly table too.
I think the only way you could make this better would be to have a replaceable top for when you eventually get the top dinged up to a point where you can flatten it again you can simply replace the top 3/4" sheet of plywood with a fresh one. I would think you could get away without fixing it in at all and let gravity and suction keep it in place?
Is there a reason you didn't make the top replaceable?
