Absolutely. But these two movies were about 6 episodes length…. Normally get a 13 episode season….
Ehhhh actually after double checking the seasons lengths of the previous seasons…. Yeah double the length def would have been well used.
I still kinda love this movie adaptation a lot. But yeah I do wish it was in seasons. It’s been so much better story wise AND animation wise since season 3… I do wish we had more. Looove sailor moon 🌙

I enjoyed the movies. Crystal’s art direction continued to improve with each season (although for this amazing franchise it should’ve started looking great, but I digress)
For Stars, I would prefer it to be a whole season to let it breathe rather than a movie format. But if they do decide to go the movie route again I hope they’ll be longer and pace better. And I hope the same people who worked on the Eternal movies work on Stars as well because so far, aside from Ikuko Ito’s art style, this is the best Sailor Moon has looked IMO

for me, it's not that s3 was bad. but the middle episodes were still plagued with derps and bad animations, framing and generally bad decisions in what to show/how to show a scenem just like the previous 2 seasons. i personally prefer s1 artstyle, but i would choose in a heartbeat consistency and good drawings than beautiful artstyle that cannot be drawn consistently good. so i was very enthusiastic when i saw ep 1 and 2 of season 3. but when it to get bad animations, i rethought if season 3 was better than season 1&2, and i realized i might choose [the bluray version] of season 1&2 over season 3.

It felt so rushed. The moments didn't really hit, regardless of if they were emotional, action-packed or heartbreaking. I'm not that familiar with the Manga stories and characterizations but if I hadn't known and loved these characters for years from other material, none of the character driven parts would've left an impact on me at all. Heck, it was already hard to feel anything because it felt so weirdly paced. I didn't get time to feel for Ami and her struggle in being loved because as soon as we see her struggling, she gets a pep talk and it's resolved, same with most other moments. The slice of life parts honestly hit the best, especially seeing the outer senshi just be together and happy. The whole thing with Chibiusa being in love with Mamoru was really weird in here, but honestly that was always weird to me.
The designs and outfits were so cute! Especially Mako stuck out to me with her chill but feminine style! And I really liked that the transformations were taken from the 90s anime, though I do feel they lack quite a bit of the original anime which I think was caused by the animation and boring music. The only time the music really did something for me was with the end credits of the first part, when the outer senshi came to the fight and a bit at the end battle. Otherwise, the soundtrack felt a bit generic.
All in all, I'd say it was a nice, fun and gorgeous-looking experience but you have to be a fan to really get anything out of it. Definitely would've benefited from being a season and not a crammed two-parter movie adaptation.

Eternal takes place 6 months after season 3. It was a good movie but had obvious pacing issues due to the manga's format. It was loyal to the manga and explored the backstory/mythology clearly (which 90s version didn't do). Can't wait for the Stars Arc.

Totally agree with you, the pacing of the movie went so fast that the characters didn’t have time breath and do some other stuff until it had to leap to next part.. I really didn’t want a movie of the dream arc, I wanted a tv show version of it.. Sure the visuals were gorgoues but again the sound effects of the transformation of the crystal show and movie is so .. excuse me for saying this .. so f***king lacking that it pisses me off .. and after watching them I feel so robbed that Toei doesn’t even care of the Sailor Moon franchise, and trust me they don’t .. From a source I saw from a video, that they went through so many problem with the production of making it but the higher ups are bunch of stupid old geezers that don’t care .. Toei should care ’cause Sailor Moon is what made magical girl into what is today but no.. they care more of their cash cow Precure more.. I love precure but I just wish they would give Sailor Moon a little more love then what it gave now.. lol sorry for the rant but I had to say it ’cause everywhere I go everyone is saying Crystal is the best and whatsover but I don’t agree.. Sure the director loved the manga and wanted to make it the best with visual and so on, but it doesn’t have soul into the show.. just feel so liveless and stale .. again sorry still I love Sailor Moon and I grew up with the show as kid and 90’s version may not be perfect but it still is good but some of the plot just not as good as the manga.. still love it too since it’s nostalgic to me.

I liked the movies and I am happy we got them but I honestly feel Eternal has some issues:
-Regarding designs, Tadano’s pencil sketches are beautiful! But when they were animated… There were problems like body proportions and gestures, sometimes lack of frames…
    - This is just personal but in the manga, in this season the designs are very elegant and sophisticated. Small heads, long legs, wide shoulders, this made the characters look more mature. In Eternal we got big heads, narrow shoulders, they were looking too young and kawaii.
    - regarding storytelling, I agree. You shouldn’t adapt an episodic series meant to be released weekly or monthly into a movie LITERALLY. It feels messy, chaotic, repetitive, rushed. My friends who didn’t read the manga lost track when the elyseon-back to child-nightmare-come back to earth part.
    - I felt a lack of epicness, specially in the last battle. Was it even a battle? I felt S. Moon and Nehelenia were in different places when fighting and just casting spells on each other.
-The song that plays when defeating Nehelenia was (in my opinion) out of place. It felt like an idol band cheerful song and didn’t get close to an “all senshi sing-along song” like LA Solider or Moon revenge.
-Lol now, don’t get me wrong, I know my critic feels tough and bitter but comes from my all time love for Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi, and 90s animation. SM manga is my fav and I love we got the movies,

The final battle felt more spent on outfit changes than on battling lmao. The outfits were cute, don't get me wrong (even though I'm still a bit confused on why they needed the ball gowns) but it took so much time while Nehelenia was just... Standing there?

the thing about the pacing and expansion is that if they were to expand it to a series like previous seasons, I'm sure they would expand the wrong parts. we want more room for the Senshi, but they would just make the battle scenes unnecessarily long and those Elektra complex moments drag. ofc thats not a fact, but just based on how they usually approach the story I would expect that we would get the wrong parts expanded ahaha

I think Crystals as a whole is not what fans deserve. There is a lack of depth, and connections with the characters, and what they are feeling. It could have been made truer to the manga without just vomiting the manga back out to its audience. In the manga it felt whimsical because it's beautiful and books give you a sense of mystery, and the 90's version developed all of their characters so deeply, that you felt like you knew them yourself. I think that the only way you understand crystals is if you are a prior fan, however it's not as captivating , and I'd even say confusing, to anyone new to the franchise.

I’ve been very disappointed in how the Sailor Moon revival has been handled. Season III was definitely a big improvement and had a lot of heart, but I feel the quality started dropping a bit towards the end.
I actually liked the art style of the first two seasons (animation issues aside). It definitely sets it apart from the original series and really goes well with the manga style.
I understand wanting to be very faithful to the manga, but as you said, the pacing was not great in these films. Sometimes it’s okay to make some changes to make the pacing or dialogue flow better.
I hate to admit it but I don’t have much confidence for the Stars adaptation.

The previous SMC 1-2 had delicate facial features and SMC 3 had a great shading and now it just looks like it was made with ok budget. If people wanted the 90s version they should just stick with the old series. What the point of the reboot if it’s going to look the the old version? Besides they totally ruined sailor moons nightmare all she does is turn to stone and doesn’t melt like in the manga. The planet symbols went back to the heart shapes , they all just look poorly made. After waiting for so long it’s a major disappointment. I just hope they do a better job for the stars arc and make them more regal and less child like for the final season.

You hit the nail on the head; the Eternal movies really *did* feel like recap films. I'm not usually one to notice pacing issues, but both these movies felt so incredibly rushed I felt I had whiplash by the end of them. It seemed like it was far more important that they hit all the story beats than it was to let any moment sit too long, to slow down and give you a chance to breathe, to absorb what you were seeing and what the characters were feeling. That's why, despite all the girls having their own little mini arcs, it felt as if they got no development whatsoever. And because they sped through everything at Mach 6, there were a lot of cute little details and scenes from the manga that they cut out, like an age-swapped Chibiusa hypnotizing Usagi's mom (speaking of which, the age swap is a cute idea and I like it in the anime, but it honestly didn't impact the plot or characters at all, here. There was no challenge the girls had to meet or lesson to learn in order to overcome it, and it could've easily been left out altogether), or the girls panicking, thinking Chibiusa was a reborn Black Lady; they didn't add much, but they were cute moments of levity that these movies could have greatly benefited from. And because they tried to cram a dozen stories in two films, the overall story never felt cohesive, or like it had a beginning, middle, and end, more like it was just going from point A to B to C to D and so on.
I was really looking forward to these movies, since the Dream arc was the first manga--not just Sailor Moon, but the first manga, period--I ever owned, and it has a special place in my heart, but from the get-go I had a feeling that cramming so much into two films would just make it feel super rushed and bloated, and ultimately they were a disappointment. They're gorgeous to look at, no question, but I might as well have been watching the trailer for all the emotion I got out of them. If they decide to adapt Sailor Stars, I really hope they ditch this format and just give it a full season.

some think the movie is too fast or just reanimations of 90s. i do not disagree with them, but i think the movie could be the strongest of all seasons because the animation quality is more consistent while still faithful to the manga and living up to the legacy of the 90s anime. i'm not saying it's perfect because i can still nitpick badly drawn faces and lazy animations here and there, but it's pretty solid as a whole.
i think the key here is expectations... season 1&2's disappointments is due to the expectation from 90s legacy. seeing a legendary anime drawn and animated with derps and 3d is such a disgrace. season 3's disappointment is due to the expectations from season 1&2. there's no more original non-repeating attack animations and original henshin animations, and also because season 3 also had derps and bad animations midway. eternal's disappointments is because we already seen season 1-3 so a fast-paced recap-like story, and reanimation of the 90s attacks are now seen as disappointment.
but imagine what if toei did crystal reboot like eternal from the start? a 2-3 movie per season, fast-paced recap-slash-retelling of the original manga, while paying homage to the legacy of 90s anime with reanimation of original attacks and henshins, and reimagination of the attacks not in 90s anime. i think fans and newcomers would give a better feedback. the issue with character development will not happen because it's a fast paced retelling movie and character development clearly in the 90s instead (it will not be a competition between crystal and 90s). the artstyle issue will not happen because it's basically an update to the 90s artstyle. the original henshin and attack issue will not happen because it pays homage to 90s. the disgraceful derps will not happen because they don't need to animate 13 episodes per season.

I agree with the pacing on Eternal films, a 13 eps season would have benefited the story greatly.
what I disagree with is the opinion on crystal 1-2. Personally I adore the artstyle of 1-2 and despise the moe style of especially the Eternal, but also the simplification of SMC3.
I didn't mind the pace of crystal 1-2, while I acknowledge that they could have done a better job with.
before eternal I rewatched all 3 seasons of crystal (net release not DVD) and I was disappointed to realize that some of the "screenshots" that circulated the internet as a "proof" of bad animation for 1-2 were in fact manipulated. And yes crystal 1 especially had some unfortunate moments(which were corrected in the DVDs) but when they got TV money the animation became better and better, and crystal 2 was spotless.
the people who trashed crystal 1-2 were also going frame by frame which is unfair to anything.
as I progressed to SMC3 with the art style change, I realized that the animation quality was exactly the same, but with the more simplified art style it wasn't as obvious, it also helped that SMC3 was not torn apart frame by frame. What we also lost with the change was the unique attacks, and we returned to copy-paste which I ended up skipping. Also SMC3 didn't give the outers (especially Haruka) all their amazing outfits and that's a crime against ME personally! Story wise was amazing though.
the other bad thing that came with SMC3 was the unofficial eng sub translation that created a lot of wrongs, and I'm very salty about it. (as crystal 1-2 translation was supervised by TOEI, while SMC3 was not. Eternal translation was wayyy better minus couple of annoying localizations that could have been avoided, namely "mommy-Mcihiru" "daddy-Haruka" instead of Michiru-mama and Haruka-papa).

I personally like the 90s version.. because in Eternal they literally pushed aside Chibiusa and made it all about Sailor Moon like usual. I mean sure you can argue “well she’s still a kid.”
Then what about Saturn? She’s not much older than Chibiusa and can literally destroy a planet if she wants.
The 90s version gave Chibiusa a purpose and chance to grow as a sailor senshi instead of being an annoying background kid..
“But the series is called SAILOR MOON not Chibi Moon!” So? That doesn’t mean everything needs to be about her.. I like Super S because it gave Serena a chance to step back for more than 2min and allow others a chance to grow.
Yes I realize they were adapting the manga only and could only fit but so much into 2 1/2hrs.. but I still think they could’ve done with allowing Sailor Moon to step back for abit and people would still enjoy it..
In eternal everyone obsessed over serena like normal including Chibiusa’s own boyfriend.. at least in Super S they gave her daughter a purpose because Serena literally couldn’t defeat the enemies without her for once.. which made the final scene of Serena saving her daughter from falling off a building way more epic and emotional because all that time Serena relied on Chibiusa for nearly every battle, yet this time it was Chibiusa who needed Serena the most.. as her mom.
And once Chibiusa was revived thanks to her mom, then Helios pretty much revived and saved them both which just made the whole thing come together as one full family bond of emotional growth..
I get why people would prefer the manga adaptation because of Mamoru becoming more than a pretty Ken doll and the amazon quartet getting revealed as future senshi, but honestly none of that was ever important to me even now.. Mamoru had his moments with Serena in S1 and the movies as her prince when Serena needed him most.. and the amazon quartet really didn’t need to be revealed unless Naoko Takeuchi planned on making a future arc with Chibiusa as the center.. which she never did and I doubt she ever intends to..
But yeah that’s just my take on it.. it’s not because of nostalgia or even the art style. I just appreciate and prefer different aspects of the 90s version compared to everyone else.

I understand your viewpoint but the one thing that bothers me is that you keep calling Usagi "Serena" because of the 90s format but use all the japanese names for the other character. I know its a small nitpick but I find it funny.

I felt kinda hollow watching this movie. While the basics were there (and I prefer the story in this over the original anime,) it felt like I was watching a long-form advertisement.
There just wasn't enough time in the movies to really get engages in the characters. The music feels bland to me as well.
I'll keep watching if they eventually readapt Stars, but I'm not exactly hopeful for it.

Pacing. That's the problem with the SM Crystal series & the Eternal film. What I love about the anime (though the series isn't perfect, what show is?) is that it took its time exploring the characters and in the new SM series/film it's lacking for the sake of being faithful to the manga, and that's the problem! Look, I'm a purist and love to adhere to the original material, but film and print are two different mediums, what works on the page may not work on screen, some things need to be explored or stretched out more on the screen, some things need to be simplified. And that's the problem with Crystal/Eternal film, they're so focused on being faithful to the story that we lose out on character development among the Sailor Senshi in their civilian form, scenes are rushed through, and specifically, in the Eternal film, too much is stuffed into 2 films, way too much! I'm afraid if it was made into a series, it would still be rushed because that's how the 1st 3 seasons of Crystal were. I'm not saying you need 40 episodes in a season to tell the story but 11, 12, or 13 acts just isn't enough -- maybe to tell the plot, but not when you need to fill in character development. We need more camaraderie between the Sailor Senshi. The whole point of Queen Serenity reincarnating them is so they can have another chance at life, to live as normal a life as girls as possible even though they have to fight. Imagine a newcomer to Sailor Moon watching the Eternal film and seeing everything rushed and crammed in, would they understand what's going on? If this was my first time coming to Sailor Moon and if I watched both the Crystal and the Eternal film, I don't think I would have become the SM fan that I am today. It wouldn't have drawn me in as the anime series did. When portraying Sailor Moon from the manga onto the screen, execution is key - execution with the material and knowing when it needs to stray a bit from the text to fill in what could enhance the story. If anyone is looking for a play-by-play, scene-by-scene panel from the manga, read the manga but understand when translating it on the screen, they got to expand and add things in. That is what will make any future adaptation of SM work successfully.

To be honest with you season 1 and 2 was probably the best season 3 it wasn't that good but I can still watch it season 4 in the movie God that needed to be scrapped and immediately before before I start screaming the animation was so choppy it was like stop chop player layers layers Chop Chop Shop later later lyrics I know you're so it then tax and the movement was way too choppy like I know I think y'all know what I'm talking about like the animation was too well except I forgot that app where you draw and you make layers that's what it look like honestly like you looks terrible like I don't know what they was doing it felt very rushed very rushed after they have four years to prepare this for this in one season in to season they just had like a few years two years maybe a month three months

The only time when sailor moon became some sort of garbage was during the crystal season 1 and 2, as they ruined the entire show. Sailor moon is an iconic anime deserving of great respect from top to bottom. One reason I lost my interest with sailor moon was when those garbage artworks appeared. Now..am back on track. Thanks to those professionals who saved this iconic anime

The entire reboot sucks. s1-eternal. s3 made me interested finally but it was just as ugly and cringey. couldn’t watch more than episode 3. Manga is just infinitely better. this reboot is insulting. They have ONE last chance with Sailor Stars. If they FLOP with this season like everything else, this will go down in history as one of the WORST reboots ever.
