      @Tearjerker A more consistent loud sound is harder to detect than an inconsistent quieter sound, imagine a constant hum, now imagine loud banging and rattling that has periods of no sound followed by loud bangs, even if those bangs are technically quieter than the constant hum, your brain interprets the loud banging as louder, and easier to pick out.

      @Tearjerker it is quieter. By a large margin. About 10 years ago I was in Germany training with Germans, British, Polish, and Bulgarians. The Leopards, Challeys, and T72's were significantly louder than the Abrams, even up close. That comes at a cost though with insane fuel consumption.

    Phly, in the beginning just after the sponsor you said that the F 14 did not have as good of accuracy bombing compared to other aircraft like the F 18. This is quite the contrary to what was happening towards the end of tomcats career. The Bombcat was an incredibly successful air to ground platform, and even was able to complete missions the hornets could not. For example operating deep inside iraqi territory, whereas hornets wouldn't have the fuel to get there, and being able to carry more ordinance than the Legacy Hornets. From my understanding a reason why Tomcats werent used in the air to ground role before the late 90's is because they already had a dedicated air to ground platform known as the A-6 Intruder. When the A-6 was retired it left a gap in the Navy's ability to launch specific strike missions, missions where the Legacy Hornets could not complete. So they quickly and hastily created the bombcat and found it to be a very good air to ground platform. Love your content, keep it up.

      @@shoeby9273 They re-worked the USAF's LANTIRN pod which had already been developed for the Strike Eagle. Mainly by installing a GPS unit into the targeting pod, which allowed them to dispense with the second navigation pod. I think the money thing basically came down to a choice between a targeting pod and AMRAAM - there wasn't enough funding for both (sadly). There's an episode on the "Tomcast" series on youtube about LANTIRN, where they had on one of the guys involved in the technical side of integrating the pod, might be the one you're thinking of

      @180791sanguinius 2 года назад +1

      @@zockersau2 It did, though. The F-14 was designed from scratch with a strike capability as it was supposed to serve with the Marines too. This never materialized and the Navy had no reason to turn its sole superfighter to a strike platform when it had the awesome A-6/A-7 combo. USN F-14 units were FAD/AS-oriented with tactical reconnaissance being the only secondary role until the early to mid-90s. The Iranians were the first to utilise the strike capability of the F-14 in combat, IIRC.

    • @ndcentral8194
      @ndcentral8194 2 года назад +2

      @@180791sanguinius From my understanding, the F-14 was then retired because the USN had enough Super Hornets that could fly further and do just as good as the F-14 is ground striking capabilities, and with no need for a dedicated interceptor, it’s usefulness ran out. Too expensive operating cost for not enough utility in return.

    That gauge next to the top left of the VDI is your airspeed. At high speeds the dial reads mach and has a small IAS ticker in the corner. But at low speeds the dial reads IAS. To the left of the HUD there’s a landing speed indicator. If it points up you’re going too slow and vice versa. Below that there’s a big AOA indicator. You want that to be around 15 for the tail hook to catch.

    I would love an air mode without markers. The markers are why I pretty much only fly out in GRB. Of course the massive expanse of air maps would be a problem with no markers, but if there was some kind of objective that got everyone into a close enough vicinity then that might help that issue.
    Like maybe have it that strike aircraft get a high RP and SL payout for taking out AI ground targets, and that would incentivise fighters to attack the strike aircraft, and protect their own ground units as well as fight off other fighters. Or maybe even have it that one side has a ground force and their job is to protect it, and the other teams objective is to wipe it out to win.
    Either way I think air RB definitely needs a refresher.

Fox 1 is for semi active radar guided missiles, fox 2 is for heat seaking missiles and fox 3 is for active radar guided missiles. There used to be fox 4 as well for guns, but now they just say guns. The Phoenix missile uses a doppler radar guiding system. Doppler radars can only see things that are moving away or towards them. Im not sure if that is modeled in game, but if it is, all you need to do to avoid the missile is fly horizontal to the direction its heading. No flare or chaff required.

    You should check out the Italian C13 T90!
    It was the vehicle that got me my phirst nuke, and I’d like to see it and the ABUL/74 (specifically the 90mm) on the channel!

    @hybridscout0134 2 года назад +15

    I'm pretty sure it wasn't designed for bombing. it was a navy interceptor. hence the radar and Phoenix. It became a bomber as it was being phased out. (Iran and money problems I believe) the tomcat definitely has the same accuracy of the F-18 because they both have CCIP bomb modes and both have targeting pods.

    • @uninvestigated
      @uninvestigated 2 года назад +4

      Before the targeting pod was active on the f14 they were not allowed to fly unguided bomb sorties as they would often over shoot the target by a lot and was a liability. But yeah later down the road they got the LANTIRN pod and were quite capable in ground attack and could even designate targets for f18s.
      The f14 seemed to have lost its funding due to personal political interests as Dick Cheney seemed to dislike Grumman. Even canceling the F-111 development. Canceling the f14 has left a huge gap in our navy's ability in air to air and interception fleet defense. But i guess air superiority hasn't been needed anyway.

    • @brandonclark435
      @brandonclark435 2 года назад +3

      Eh, if you look at the Navy request that started the Project, it was intended to have ground attack capability. It's mission was much broader, ranging from Fleet Air Defense to escorting attack aircraft to dropping air to ground stuff.

    • @uninvestigated
      @uninvestigated 2 года назад +2

      @@brandonclark435 Dick Cheney single handedly put Grumman out of business pretty much. Grumman came up with two different proposals for upgraded f14s that would have filled the role perfectly. The first was the quick strike platform that was just upgrading the existing platform, They said it wasn't enough and the platform was "1960s technology" pretty much a lame excuse because any of it's problems could have easily been addressed and fixed by Grumman. So the next proposal was the super tomcat 21and was a totally redesigned new airframe, and that proposal was too much this time.
      It's known across the navy and military leaders that the retiring of the tomcat left a void in it's effectiveness in fleet defense.
      The f18 lost to the f16 for the air force role. It was too slow. Non afterburner Cruse was only 600nmph and it's range was very poor. Then compared to the f14, the f14 was faster and more agile in every aspect with a much greater range. It was obviously cheaper on the other hand.
      Only with the addition of the super hornet did we get the range back. But they effectively were mainly used as an air refueling role for the normal hornet because of it's poor range.
      But hey it paid off not funding a new naval interceptor because it hasn't been needed luckily.

    • @Solidboat123
      @Solidboat123 2 года назад +1

      Grumman always intended the F-14 to be a multi-role fighter as well as a fleet defence interceptor, they even wired all the Tomcats for air-to-ground from the start. The only reason it didn't happen for so long is that the Navy didn't want/need to spend the time and money developing the capability, since they already had several attack jets on deck (A-4, A-6, A-7 and the F-4), plus they wanted the F-14 to focus on fleet air defence as it was a fairly significant step-up from the F-4

    Yeah, there was a veresion/upgrade, called the Super Tomcat 21 plus. This essentialy turned the f-14 into an F-15E strike eagle, with more missiles, built in lantern pod, ground track radar, more fuel, better engines... Yeah, it was a full upgrade package.
    The RIO got more jobs, becoming the EW officer and Bombedeer. Navy decided it was to expensive to upgrade them, and just went with the F-18 E/F

      @@cristobalalvarez5491 I think it was like 4 demonstrators of the 21 plus, and 2 of the ASF-14 (advanced strike fighter) but the AST was only a marginal improvement over the 21 plus, so that one was a total no go.
      F110-GE-429 turbofan engines. This 29K pound thrust class engine, a modification of the same variant found in later block F-16s and now some Strike Eagle derivatives, albeit with a longer exhaust pipe tailored to the Tomcat, would give the ST21 supercruise performance (>Mach 1 without the use of gas-guzzling afterburner) while carrying a relevant air-to-air loadout. Some state M1.2-1.4 supercruise would have been possible.
      Enlarged and recontoured leading-edge gloves with an additional 2,200lbs of fuel storage each.
      Underfuselage-mounted Ford Aerospace (now Lockheed Martin) Night Owl targeting pod/FLIR and navigation pod.
      Single-piece windscreen for enhanced visibility.
      Wide-angle raster-scan HUD capable of projecting FLIR imagery.
      Glass cockpit. New mission computers and graphics processors.
      On-Board Oxygen Generations System (OBOGS)
      AN/APG-71 radar with additional upgrades ported over from the AN/APG-70 used on the F-15E. Expanded range and capabilities over the original AN/APG-71 in F-14D, which itself was an outgrowth of the AWG-9.
      Digital Flight Control System (DFCS).
      Wet wing pylons capable of carrying 300-gallon external tanks.
      Ability to carry 425-gallon external tanks on nacelle hardpoints if it was developed. Existing tank size 280 gallons.
      Larger multi-segmented fowler-flaps.
      Enlarged and extended slats on wing leading-edge.
      Bring-back to ship capacity increased from 9k lbs to 16k lbs.
      Reduced approach speed and better slow-speed control.
      Integration of latest standoff weaponry, as well as AIM-120 AMRAAM.
      Upgraded AN/ALE-47 countermeasures dispenser. Integration of the BOL countermeasures dispensers into the outboard pylons as a mission configuration option.
      Add to that -
      A variant of the AN/APG-63(V)3 used by the Eagle, with enhanced multi-mode capabilities, just like the AN/APG-82 but with a much larger antenna array
      AN/APX-111(V) "pizza box" identification friend or foe (IFF)
      Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod
      Expanded AN/ALE-47 EW suit
      and a ton of other upgrade. The thing would have been a BEAST. Not a dog fighter in the slightest but in BVR combat it would be carrying up to 4 phoenixes, 4 amrams, and 4 sidewinders.
      The ability to lift 6 harpoons for anti-ship attacks, it essentially carried 50% more load then the F-18 E/F.
