  • Our two favorite smooth operators are again doing a little show-and-tell for us. Brownells Gun Techs and firearm history geeks Steve Ostrem and Keith Ford recently found a Winchester Model 61 smoothbore "shotgun" at the Rock Island Auction House. The Model 61 is one of Winchester's classic pump action .22 rimfire rifles. This example, however, is chambered for .22 shotshells. This fearsome weapon is perfect for hunting butterflies and bumblebees or cleanly shooting Ritz crackers out of the air. OK, seriously.... Smoothbore .22s like our Model 61 were often called "garden guns" and were used to clear small pests out of your back yard - snakes, vermin and birds eatin' on your vegetable patch. Called a "Rutledge bore," the first few inches of the barrel ahead of the chamber were .22 caliber, then the bore opened up to about 5/16" to help the shot pattern better. The .22 shotgun fad eventually passed, and nowadays a gun like Rock Island's beautifully preserved Winchester Model 61 is simply a cute little collectible.

was just about to point to that out, however i'm pretty sure its a lever action, not a pump, but i wouldnt be surprised if they did make a pump version.

Wow, gentlemen, when I was a Boy Scout in the late 1950’s our Summer Camp offered MoSkeet - very small and short flying clay pigeons that we shot with .22 “snake shot” from these very Winchesters. The fact is, I learned a lot about firearms safety and basic proficiency at that Scout Camp.

A great video regarding a rare and very interesting "rifle"; congratulations.
I believe the smoothbore 61s were inspired by the Mo-Skeet (Mo-Skeet-O) mini clay game of the late 50s-early 60s. My only exposure was at Scout camps during this period. The overbore toward the muzzle ("Routledge Choke"?) was surprisingly effective in focusing the tiny shot charge for longer range shooting. Most of the ones I had opportunity to use were bolt actions (Remingtons and Mossbergs). A lost era...

Mine is the rifled version, with the original factory tang sight. Almost new also. I love it.

My grandfather had a 9mm garden gun, I was taught to shoot it at about 7years old to keep the birds off the fruit trees in the garden.

The design is almost the same as the Browning Trombone,it would be good to see how close the design dates are .

9mm garden guns were popular in England and Europe for a very long time and can still be found pretty easily.

Could you maybe tell us something about the background and history of the Model 61. Is there anything unique or unusual about the 61 in particular other than the-smooth-bore-is-outdated-and-not-much-good-for-anything?

I own this model 61, the 1958 year. And my Dad and I hunted many squirrel and rabbit in the 60s and 70s to eat. Maybe “out of date” now but if you use 22lr hollow point works, very accurate for self defense if needed. Great throw back Winchester machine.
And if you find a current rifle with such mechanical and reliable history, I suggest you buy it. Have a great day.
