  • Spey casting single hand lines is an incredibly useful technique. We're out fishing with our 5 wt. trout rod, equipped with the usual WF-5-F line and we run across a situation where we need to Spey cast. It's nice to know that it can be done.
We also look at what lines work best for Spey casting on regular rods and why they work.

Thank you. This really helped a lot for river fishing around here. Have some tight areas that I know the fish are holding. Also enjoy your video's on tube flies. I use them for bass.

This is such an underviewed video in the fly fishing community, especially the swing crowd and entire Rockies section of the US (Colorado, Wy, MT).

Thank you very much for your teaching, I appreciate it so much. I would like to ask you what line should I use to do some spey when I am in the river if I fish with a 9/10ft 3wt rod. I need to use long leaders too, of around 12 or 15 ft and small flies. Thank you very much in advance. Best regards

If you're using long leaders and small flies, then you'll find that the line you're currently using to overhead cast will work. ruclips.net/video/eNxtxa1ij1g/видео.html and one with a 3 wt. ruclips.net/video/FRUiubZCN0w/видео.html

Another great video, thank you Peter, im as uncoordinated as it can get and very new to the sport, struggling with the OPST skagit head quite a bit, would it be fair to say a 40+ line might help learn the basics of single hand spey casting, 9' 6wt?

The older 40+ line with its very long front taper would work just fine, but the new Sniper 40+ is not that great for Spey casting. If you can find an older 40+ (no longer made), it'll do the job.

Hi there, whats the best floating line that's on the market just now, that i can Spey cast... Roll cast and that I could put airflo Polly leaders on? Just for my local river, don't have alot of back room for casting... Only using size 10 and 12 salmon doubles. Thank you 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

Are you using a single hand 8wt. or 9 wt?

@@gtchasingsilver Airflo used to make a line called the Switch Float which was a full line, somewhat like the old 40+ only with a shorter 27'-28' head and a thick enough tip to turn trout Polyleaders. It might still be possible to find a few sitting on shelves as it wasn't that long ago when it was discontinued. Here's my video on it: ruclips.net/video/AMX0a3_P-q0/видео.html
You could also look at the Airflo Scout as it's a very short 16'-17' head that will cast well in very tight spaces and turnover PolyLeaders with no difficulty. It's a head system line so it needs a running line as well. ruclips.net/video/0hqP0U0RCGs/видео.html
