I enjoyed this video very much.I have no formal art training, but have a deep desire to create watercolor paintings. I am 60 years old, so it is unlikely that I would have aspirations for attending school at this point. I watch a lot of YT videos to learns the skills and mechanics of watercolor, but I have yet to find my voice. I am inspired by your words of encouragement.
I am glad that you enjoyed the video. You have already done the most important thing, actually two. You started and you develop yourself. Just go on. Really. That’s how it works in making art and being an artist 👍
Wonderful insights…I totally agree. I learned the basics of watercolour landscapes when I was young but always had a love of abstract paintings. Now I am retired and exploring intuitive painting using acrylics. The only choice I make in the beginning is my colour palette. Looks like you put down Payne’s grey? I love that with yellow ochre and a dash of something contrasting for surprise. Each painting becomes an adventure. Thankyou for sharing your thoughts and the demo. So generous.
What a wonderful journey you have made so far. I wish you lots of fun and exploration within your intuitiv way of working. The grey color I use is whether a mix of ultramarine blue with burnt umber or in this case it was Moonglow by Daniel Smith. Thank you for reacting
I have been searching for what seems like forever, for abstract watercolor techniques that didn't resemble a mess. Thank you for sharing and thank God I found you ❤️ 🙏
It’s me who should be thanking you for finding me. Have faith in your own capacities. We all can do so much more than we think. It’s all there allready. Good luck.

It's so trendy to proclaim that there are no rules in art! and that you don't need art school! Of course you don't if you are happy to be a hobbyist or if you can devote significant time to developing your skills. However if you are young and seriously want to become a professional, art school-like training for any skill or profession-is very helpful. It focuses your energies, gives you a broad context for what you are doing, allows you to explore many media and approaches and teaches you basic skills. You Tubers who proclaim that you don't need art school generally want you to follow their channels and/or pay to take their classes instead. And they are seldom recognized by the wider art community.
Thank you for your reaction. I find it very refreshing but do we find Monet a hobbyist than? No artschools at his time and rejected for his way of painting. Artschool is a way but certainly not the only way.
@@Aquarelamore a lot of artists were apprentices of other artists back in the day. Not necessarily an art school but someone you practice under for months, years.
Very insightful, thank you! I painted a lot as a child with my grandfather, who was a self-taught artist. Then I moved with my mother to another country and that part of my life ended. Today I‘m 59 and just bought paints and supplies. I‘m both excited and terrified. I‘ve thought about taking online classes for the minimum basics, but I‘m uncertain. Now I have a lot more to think about.
Thank you for sharing your story. You are doing allright when I hear your story. Age doesn’t matter at all, you allready have basics from your youth and you have set the first step with buying paint. The rest is all natural. To create we need excitement and anxiety. Once you have started your eyes will take over and all of a sudden you ‘remember’ how to proceed. Just start and grant yourself the experiment. Have fun ❤
Oh I wanted to go to art school, about 50 yrs ago, Dad was afraid I'd turn into a pot head and it was out of the question financially anyway. I would never go to art school now, I like to play and experiment and never had patience or attention span to absorb lectures. I'm very happy having learned from old PBS TV shows and now youtube videos. Great video! Thank you for sharing

So did I Melinda. There is one thing Artschool is teaching, something that has nothing to do with art, that is helping. Watch my coming video, it’s about that.
I have always been painting since I was a child. Different materials, like silk screen, without gutta, and now I'm into acrylics. Watercolor was not one of my favorits because? It was often to defined. NowmI looked at your paintings and I will give it a try. It's a whole new perspective you opened up for me. Art school? I'm in a lot of artgroups on Facebookmand I can always tell the people that where in artschool. They often are interchangable. They are good, but lack originality. For a while, I tried to copy, because I thaught this was what I should master, but realized that this was not at all me and let it go. Strangely, I often get many more likes than these seemingly techmnically much better paintings.
Good to read. Embrace your originality. I met someone many professional musicians, classically educated who don’t dare to play a tune without a score in front of them. To me that’s completely having lost the purpose of music. Good luck and glad to be of help.
Yes you can learn skills but being a practising artist isnt just skills it's recognition. In Australia you can get a Nationally recognised degree in visual /fine arts opening the door to graduate study in art, teaching, writing, psychology and all humanities areas. You will also be able to apply for grants and artist residencies that you won't get if you're not qualified. Art school also teaches art theory art history and how to develop a recognisable body of work etc
This. You get so much out of art school/college/university. Learning art history is important, finding your style, developing a network, working with practicing artists, so much more.
Art school or no art school, what makes me sad is that there’s people who aren’t making art because they think only people who’ve been to art school can make art. So they just don’t even try, and they’re missing out on how wonderful art is
I think I know what art institute you’re talking about (Milan?). That’s actually a program I want to take haha. I think they offer a lot of value in their teachings (I’ve taken some of their individual cheaper masterclasses), and I do think they’re experts in selling their art as well. I agree with you that a lot of students work looks like Dimitra and Elli’s style, but I think it’s normal to have your mentor’s style rub off on you. Through regular painting I think your own style develops naturally as well. Very interesting video, thanks for sharing! 💜💜
@@SashaFitzgerald Thank you for reacting. Doing an artschool, program or whatever is ok. We will definitely learn something or maybe a lot. It’s very personal. I wish you a lot fun and succes. I took a look at their program and it looks interesting. Milan gave it a good thought. Let me know if you are going to do their program.
I have watched several Milan art Institute videos and their crazy disorganized 'competition'. The art is similar in content and style. Same procedures and techniques using the Milan expensive art supplies. A very odd manner of evaluation of art. Slightly twisted people. I would NEVER refer to the output of the art as individualistic.
That’s true but not a guarantee for succes. As being older and maybe even selftaught (as myself when it comes to painting) we can have an advantage. More wisdom and less distraction if we have decided where to go. Just go on. We have nothing to loose 💪💪. Thank you for your thoughts
