Carolyn was one of a kind, well read and articulate - speaking a vernacular far different from that of my parents and the rest of the Greatest Generation. The Beats were truly a splinter group living a subterranean lifestyle. Best definition of the difference between the Beats and the Hippies they spawned was the use of the word "cool." Hippies: "Be cool" Beats: "Play it cool"
The other planetary positions in ones natal chart are just as important as sun sign. Still, very candid and thoughtful reflections by Carolyn here. Her book was enjoyable to read.
@janeewalker 1 minute ago Gerald Nicosia, the author of the best Kerouac biography, MEMORY BABE, published in 1983 and updated in 2022, also wrote a very interesting book about LuAnne Henderson, Neal Cassady's first wife, his 16 year old bride. The book is THE ONE AND ONLY. It is worth the read.
This from the documentary "What Happened to Kerouac." The interview is from 1982 in Boulder at the big summit ... chronicled in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Jack Kerouac."
That’s why I don’t really respect something in women. That is, a seemingly grounded woman like her would 1) fall for, and 2) put up with a person like Neal Cassidy. Her, and to some extent, other women in his life. It’s just so hard to respect them.
Kerouac was also very conflicted and guilt-ridden about his sexuality. He was bisexual, spent much of his life in denial about it, and no doubt a lot of his drinking and depression (and eventual descent into bitterness and anger) had to do with this.
Try the book "Subterranean Kerouac," by Ellis Amburn; quite a bit of detail, all impeccably researched and non-sensationalized. In her own autobiography, "Off the Road," Carolyn talks about finding Neal and Ginsberg making love in their bed (and being rather shocked by it); she also had an affair with Kerouac, but I don't remember whether she mentions his conflicted sexuality.
David, YOU are an homosexual ! How dare you criticize one of the few (may be 5 or 6 max) american writers that are actually good (even if he wasn't really american)...
I wasn't "criticizing" anyone (since when is it "criticizing" someone to point out that they were bisexual or gay?). I was simply suggesting that, at least according to Amburn's book, his inner conflicts over his sexuality sometimes tormented him and were probably at the root of some of his personal problems. I hold him in absolutely high esteem as a writer.
Look how pretty Carolyn is,even at her age in this vid, she's still so beautiful. You can tell she was just a knock out back in her day.
She must have been an amazingly strong person to put up with the shenanigans of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady.
For real
Thanks for posting. Enjoyed this.
So, this is the Carolyn of whom Jack wrote. Great to have heard her perspective. Thanks so much for this post.
lovely woman. would be nice to see a whole interview
She is still good lookin' 😮
A very revealing and extremely eloquent analysis. Perhaps the most interesting thing I've heard one human say about another
Beautiful woman.
This was warmingly enjoyable. Thanks )) :-)

Her memoir Off The Road is a real page turner. Couldn't put it down once I started.
Great insight.
Her perspective is so illuminating. In Myers-Briggs terminology it sounds like Jack was either a ISFP or INFP personality type.

Being a woman Ive always had a tough time w the beats bc it was all about guys. Carolyn confirms that here. Boys Club
Sure. Screwed up boy's club. Heaven help a beat wife/ girlfriend or child. Beat men just wanted to die

Did he have Irish roots? because Cassady is an Irish family name, the name originates from County Donegal.
Probably
Thomas DuPont I cant seem to translate your meaning or intention
what is the source of this interview?
me too dies anyone know it?

Seems like Kerouac was truly the 'extension of human nature' that Camus attributed to the fictional character, Mersault.
oh look at that ! An american citizen who read l'étranger... Come on...

Certíssima dizendo como Jack era extremamente pisciniano kkkkkkkkkk
Astrology is unscientific blather
SAY NO TO TRUMP I said YES to Trump on November 8.
For today´s ignorant scientific paradigm you´re right
Deadheads for trump
'its science' 'believe science' 'science is science' -narcissistic self obsessed neoliberal asshats (yes that includes you)
it explains it unless you don't really believe in astrology
I guess this interview was from the seventies?
Early 80s

Really? Where did you get this info?
do tell!

PISCES explains it, but what was his Moon Sign?
Virgo ascendant and moon
Yep. He was opposite of me. Im virgo/Pisces Moon and he Pisces/Virgo moon
Insightful about the astrological side of Jack.
the other side of the coin.
A worthwhile look into the life and the mind of the writer -and then the dopey detour into astrology.
