    In this piano tutorial, I am going to show you 3 different ways to play a major 251 chord progression. We're going to be using a variety of voicings including rootless voicings, big two-handed chords & some altered harmony.
    The first way I show you is a pretty bog standard way of voicing a 251. This will be very useful for things such as comping, soloing over and playing jazz standards.
    The second way is similar to the first, except that we introduce some altered harmony in the dominant chord. This method is especially good for soloing over since it builds a huge amount of tension.
    The third and final way makes use of big, two-handed voicings. We use some altered harmony again and we also make use of the famous Kenny Barron voicing.
    It's definitely worth transposing these into some different keys to help you internalize them.

    Hi Simon, this was fantastic! I've seen a lot of videos lately on 2-5-1 here. My question is why the focus on this progression specifically. Does this help as practice for beginners?

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  4 года назад +1

      The 251 the most commonly found chord progression in jazz. If you master this chord progression, you will be halfway to learning a majority of jazz standards. If jazz is what you're interested in, then I definitely recommend focusing on this progression 😀

      @AJ-ep9is 4 года назад

      @@Piano_Pig Oh my God I'm sorry to say, but I can't stand jazz! I think that means I'll have to stay far away from these exercises! What exercises would you recommend if my ultimate goal was to play Beethoven.

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  4 года назад +1

      @Ajay Joseph As William said above, it's a great idea to get familiar with chords and start anaylzing classical pieces to see what harmony they are using. Also, have a look at some Hanon exercises, they are great for building finger strength and dexterity.

    • @AJ-ep9is
      @AJ-ep9is 4 года назад

      @William Fryburger Thanks William, this is great insight, I've only started to delve into the technicalities of playing the piano, when previously I concentrated on learning pieces rather than focusing on theory and technique.

      @@Piano_Pig Thanks for the reply Simon, I'll be sure to check out Hanon to build dexterity and strength. This is great material, keep doing what you do. Thanks once again!

    Why is it a rootless Dm7? Isn’t it just a F7 chord?

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  4 года назад +1

      Do you mean an Fmaj7? If so, then yes that voicing can function as either an Fmaj7 or a Dm9. It has all the chord tones a Dm9 has so it can be used as either.
