This History For Humans episode teaches how slavery spread and expanded during the 1800s with the rise of the cotton industry. It teaches how the cotton gin gave new life to slavery that seemed to be dying out in the United States. The expansion of slavery into the cotton belt transformed the lives of the enslaved Black people. Students learn about the work they did, how they lived, free-Black people, and how a unique African American culture emerged with the influence of music and religion. Lastly, it covers how enslaved people resisted their bondage including Nat Turner's Rebellion.
