thanks for the terrific footage. this brings back great memories for me of last march on the flats in islamorada...i was using an 8" red tube and the cudas were killing it...
nice job reviving him in the mangroves so the sharks couldnt get to him while he was tired. Glad to see you do that....most people would have just thrown it back in the water and hoped for the best. Always good to see people respecting the waterway's and the fish they hold.
It was probably the handle spin during cast allow the trip lever to engage. Some reels are more sensitive to that than others. I have noticed some penn spinners are prone to this, but never ever a problem for me because I remove the "trip lever" on all of my reels. It eliminates that problem as reduces the chance of wind knots drastically because of the forced better technique.
Ya...it is usually an "Z" shaped bar that flips the bail closed when you start reeling. When taken out you can reel indefinitely and the bail won't close.
Great vid. I am guessing you used a gopro cam? Can you tell me which model? I want to make vids like this but i want the cheapest model I can find that will give me similar quality...
Nice one. Now you can catch him again. I bet there are a ton of Mangrove Snapper in there. I have to get a kayak. I saw some single ones at Sams for 300.00.
i'm planning a trip to the keys, looks like i need to get a pair of those grips if i don't want to lose all my lures. i'm a bit scared to handle cudas, do they ever jump when they're close to the kayak? also, can you recommend a couple spots for me to try out in may for table fish
I was just talking to a buddy of mines who said he had the battle and he had to return it because it because the bail kept flipping back on him when casting resulting in him loosing allot of tackle. He returned the reel and they replaced it 2 times and he still had the same problem. Has this ever happend to you? Maybe I'll try the spinfisher v too. Looks like it will be a great reel for stripers and blues next season.
+John Skinner Fishing Thanks for the reply! Did you use single strand wire or one of the newer knotable types of wire leader? I've lost some plugs to these guys in the past while targeting other species and have been thinking about using a wire leader in the areas where they are common, but i'm not too sure what to use, without giving up too much action of the lures.
We're you sight fishing or randomly casting? I'm in the keys now and I caught a few cudas using your same method but I was random casting not spotting them. Just wondering if your sight fish or random cast for them. Thanks
R Curtis no it's not safe to eat you can get ciguatera.Ciguatera is a foodborn illness (food poisoning) caused by eating fish that is contaminated by ciguatera toxin.Ciguatera toxin is a heat-stable lipid soluble compound, produced by dinoflagellates and concentrated in fish organs, that can cause nausea, pain, cardiac, and neurological symptoms in humans when ingested.
I tried doing the same thing in Biscayne Bay a month back. Too much sea weed. I caught a ...I don't know...maybe 18 inch cuda. I was trying to catch sea trout but failed. A buddy I went with caught one. The small cuda are delicious.
That was a brave move! trying to grip a Barracuda like he is doing is DANGEROUS! specially when she is approaching towards you...worst than with a shark of a bigger size (a bit in size) You have to be extreme careful just like with a Marlin! A last effort with a jump and just and open mouth would slice through flesh and bleeding to dead may occur if not immediate help is around! one in fifty but still a chance!
Get's my heart pumping when it keeps missing and you can see the giant splashes and you're reeling like mad. Insane. I love it.
Grew up in south Florida. this video really makes me miss home. great job
thanks for the terrific footage. this brings back great memories for me of last march on the flats in islamorada...i was using an 8" red tube and the cudas were killing it...
Thanks a lot for the response. I love your cuda vids keep it up man. And yes them poppers really get them going. Thanks again.

That looked like a fricken blast, awesome vid john.
Awesome as usual! I wish I could fish this much!
lovely fish and great vid well enjoyed watching it, also great to see you release that fantastic fish to fight another day
About 3 feet.
Pretty cool John - nice catch!
Excellent catch. Awesome vid.

I'm a Penn fan. The Battle is OK. I appreciate the speed of the 6.2:1 gear ratio. Next purchase will be a Penn Spinfisher V.

cool video John. Keep an eye out for hammerheads before you stick your hand in the water, that cuda was making a lot of commotion
Thanks for taping that! I know it is a hassle at times
Nice job!!! Great catch
No trouble with the battle bail for me.
Looking and appreciating vs. stunning and killing very different.
I caught a barracuda about that size yesterday and it was a blast, nice fish
Woooow, thats awesome. Im thinking about getting a fishing kayak but it seems weird because you cant really move in it.
That looks SOOOOOOOOO fun. Ive never caught a barracuda.
Nothing sounds better than the sound of line screaming
Be careful when they're fresh and close. They do jump close to the boat.
Oh cool, is it braided? We have the same set up then. And I didn't know I can catch a huge barracuda like that with my rod.
WOW CAN THAT GUY FISH unbelievable skills John
Great vid. I am guessing you used a gopro cam? Can you tell me which model? I want to make vids like this but i want the cheapest model I can find that will give me similar quality...
How do you compare the fight? Lets say compared to a big blue or some other great fighting fish?
Nice one. Now you can catch him again. I bet there are a ton of Mangrove Snapper in there. I have to get a kayak. I saw some single ones at Sams for 300.00.

Nice fish. How do you like those penn reels. i'm really thinking about buying a couple. Would you recoment them?

What do yopu mean by "trip lever" Is this the lever that stops the bail from ingaging when you reel?
I'll be in Marathon a couple of weeks from now on my Native Mariner pedal kayak doing a lot of this!
hey john, are you sight fishing them or just casting where you think they are? also im headed down there in two weeks any suggestions?
And what lb test are you using? Thanks
Can you please respond if that's the Penn Battle 4000 or 5000? Thank you
Incredible speed, but moderate stamina.
I would say John has decent speed and excellent stamina. He never stops fishing! :)
gopro3 silver
did he make it or did he sink?
that's a lot of dag gone teeth. great catch and awesome release.
Nice cuda,what lure is that
Did you use a wire leader when targeting these cudas or just the regular mono/floro?
+hhazim wire

+hhazim The nice knotable stuff.
Is this a two piece rod? Or did they let you bring a 7' rod on the plane?
Southwest Air allows an 86''x3'' rod tube as one checked bag. I fit four one-piece 7-footers in there.
We're you sight fishing or randomly casting? I'm in the keys now and I caught a few cudas using your same method but I was random casting not spotting them. Just wondering if your sight fish or random cast for them. Thanks
Random - just looking to cover a lot of water. The long casting pencils work well for that.
Too low to sight them from the yak. Just covering lots of water.
Cool. Nice job.
I hate being as far inland as I am. It's absolutely beautiful there
what is the name if the yak rental place.
Big Pine Kayak Adventures. They're excellent and priced reasonably with nice fishing kayaks. Tell him John Skinner sent you.
thanks....
Can you eat this type?
