    Two fun facts not mentioned in this video: 1) Rolls used Citroen's hydrodynamic syspension system and built it under licence, 2) The FAB1 was the only representational of a fictional car that Rolls-Royce allowed to have the Rolls-Royce name on it, and you can see why as it fitted their identity and was great for marketing purposes.

      When Hollywood decided to make the film "Thunderbirds"*, Rolls Royce declined to build a car for the film.
      So that version of "Fab 1" is a Ford creation.

      @@lordcaptainvonthrust3rd the Ford Thunderbird is used in the thirth Thunderbirds movie. There are 3 Thunderbird movies.
      the first 2 movies "thunderbirds are go"1966 and "Thunderbird 6" 1968 have the original RR model of the Fab1.
      A Thunderbird movie without a Rolls Royce other UK luxury brand Fab1 is in my view a sacriledge!
      In the 2004 Thunderbirds movie Lady Penelope should at least had a Range Rover /Jaguar / Aston Martin who were at that time part of the Ford Motor companny.

    I always found the Carmague to be one of the best looking cars Rolls produced during that era. Part of that being a result of not liking much of the 70’s and 80’s Rolls baroque design aesthetic, which the Carmague eschewed in favor of cleaner, more original angular styling. To my eyes as a kid, it appeared to be what a future-looking Rolls-Royce should be. I especially like the 3-quarter views and the integration of the pillars into the shoulder-line. I’d proudly drive one of these beasts.

    For those curious with the reference made to the appeances being similar to the Fiat Coupe is because the main desighner at RR in Crewe spotted a visitors Fiat in the car park and wanted to ape its general looks which is exactly how the carmage did.Even the seats and stitching were homaged as he was so impressed with the Fiats styling that was modern and extremely luxurious at the time.He realised that RR needed a general more contemporary look for greater appeal.Tyrells workshop actually did a video on the subject.

    The Shadow like the Cloud was beautifully built and designed. There was real flowing harmony in the design. The rear tail lights for example were integrated into the flowing body lines. The cars avoided being slab sided through clever design and placement of trim. The Carmargue however was amateurish being designed really as a 2 door silhouette and not from a 3 dimensional perspective. It didn't work and its size did it no favours. Compared to a Ferrari 400 or a Fiat 130 it was obese and lacked the elegance of a Corniche. Nevertheless it wasn't the worst RR design IMO.

    It's a butterface. The round headlights are the most discordant style note, especially since their surround doesn't quite match the turn signal clusters at any point - all-amber or all-clear white except an amber side reflector ones on US-spec models would've helped a bit and the prototype with quad square sealed beam headlights should've gone into production immediately.
    Other than that it's still a bit too tall for a coupe, the 1977-79 Buick LeSabre and Pontiac Catalina coupes were a more successful adaptation of Fiat 130 design cues to a really big car (I'm leaving the Bonneville out because its' skirted rear fenders reintroduced a heaviness the base design avoided).

    I caught several mistakes already in the first 30 seconds. The car was never intended to replace the Corniche that was only a couple of years old at yhe time, it was thought of as an upward extension of the line-up. It wasn't "The first" Rolls-Royce designed outside the company. In fact, it is almost the other way around. Up until rhe fifties, most Rolls-Royce bodies was not only designed but also built outside the company. The Silver Dawn/Wraith was the first "in-house" design, followed by the Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow, and the Corniche. So, there had only been four models previous to the Camargue that could be considered being designed by Rolls-Royce themselves. Also, even though the Corniche and other special models had been built by Mulliner Park Ward "outside" the company, that company had been acquired by Rolls Royce in 1959.

    • @ingvarhallstrom2306
      @ingvarhallstrom2306 Год назад +1

      @@chrisdavidson911 In some cases, yes. There are several notorious cases of cars being designed and built by coachbuilders that didn't met the approval of RR. Of course, most coachbuilders built their cars with the company's blessing. My point being, before the late forties, they didn't have any design department less a designer of their own, because *ALL* of their cars were built and designed outside the company. The Styling Department was only made an entity of its own within the company in 1951 in preparation for the Silver Cloud and with John Blatchley heading it who had previously designed cars for the outside coachbuilder Gurney Nutting.

    • @mrspandel5737
      @mrspandel5737 Год назад

      If anything, the earlier coachbuilt cars were essentially one-offs built to customer specification on a standard RR chassis, which was common practice for all luxury car makers. The only thing on those bodies provided by the chassis makers was usually the radiator grille. The Carmague was a serial production vehicle though, with its standard body being a Pininfarina design. To my knowledge none of the standard Bentley and Rolls-Royce bodies prior to it (keyword being standard bodies) were outsourced to outside coachbuilders.

    • @ingvarhallstrom2306
      @ingvarhallstrom2306 Год назад +1

      @@mrspandel5737
      it wasn't even the first time that Pininfarina was involved in the design process. Pininfarina designed a one-off coupe on a Bentley chassis in the early fifties that was the inspiration for the in-house Bentley Continental. Pininfarina was also hired in secret as a design consultant for the Silver Shadow, a fact that Rolls Royce themselves tried to hide, as it was very important to them that it looked like their first "Single Bow" design was made by themselves and not by an outside party. If you compare the Silver Shadow against the Pininfarina designed Peugeot 403 of 1955, you'll notice that the Silver Shadow is nothing but the concept of the 403 scaled up.

    • @herseem
      @herseem Год назад +6

      Yes, but on how many other engines would you be able to balance a coin on its edge while its running? That's what really matters to car buyers! But remember that this engine was developed over time, and it was more about torque than power. As a result, when this engine was eventually replaced by shiny new BMW V12, so many buyers hated it that they brought the V8 back out of retirement as a 'red label' edition - that's what it means when you see it on the back of a Rolls or Bentley. Someone who has driven both said that the V12 didn't have the instant torque that the V8 has, that's why he prefers the V8. So an old engine being brought back out of retirement due to customer demand says something about it that it has some quality that people just liked.

    • @smorris12
      @smorris12 Год назад +1

      @@alancrisp1582 So its got torque low down. Fine. But they couldn't be bothered to do anything to make it rev or breathe. Which makes it a one trick, flat-footed pony. And then they stuck with it for years.
      As I said, over-hyped.

    This is the ONLY R.R. model that I can honestly say that I wouldn't lift a finger if I saw one in a motorcar crusher somewhere.
    Since the early 1900's we've always been an R.R. family. (And Cadillac) Both sets of grandparents had 1965 R.R. SC3's that we still have in perfect working order. Over the yrs we've had almost every model or the RR line up. But this Camargue was such an abomination and slap in the face of what the artistry of the lines of the RRs were, that my father STILL carries on about it to this day!! He would say, "Appealing to the nouveau riche is no way to keep the mystique and exclusivity of this treasured line in tact." I have to agree with him. Look at what's buying them today? Just rubbish.
    Just because you can afford to buy a R.R. doesn't mean you should be able to own one.

    200 hp out of a 6.75 liter engine is medieval. Steam engines were more effective than that. Out of 6.75 liters I expect at absolute least 480 hp. If Japan can get 100 hp out of one liter, then this bucket has to get 1 hp out of every cubic inch. Everything else is to be put directly into the skip.

    No they don't use Citroen's suspension system, they licensed the technology. This story has been around since the Romans were in Britain. The first Silver Shadow started this (1965) when they used Citroen technology for their high-pressure braking system. ALL Silver Shadows from '65 to '80 have four coil springs as suspension. Where the story surfaced was that the rear tail-lift mechanism was accomplished by using the high pressure from the brake system to raise or lower the rear end of the car based upon load.

      I have no idea where this myth originated but I suspect it was due to a lazy journalist making things up. His article, when referenced, would then spread this ignorance and you see this with other cars. There's nothing of the car that even remotely resembles any Citroen part and that "Citroen technology" as far as I have researched refers to a small link between No. 1 and No.2 brake distribution valves. The rest was all existing technology developed by Rolls-Royce.
