Growing up, I was deathly allergic to cats. I avoided them most of my life, just like you. However, at one point I was living with a lady whose kids (4 girls) had a cat. Long story short, the cat ran out of the house one day and got pregnant. Later, the lady moved and in a joking manner I said I would only take one of the kittens if it was a solid color. I had seen the kittens and none of them were solid - except for that one I must have overlooked. I named her Pepper because she was solid black, still is. That was 18 1/2 years ago. Now, I went to the doctor (at the VA) and had my allergy tests run, and things have reversed. I am now deathly allergic to dogs. BTW, all those things you discussed about cats go away if you do one thing. Do not let them out of the house. Pepper has never had any health problems whatsoever, and I have never let her out of the house, not even for a second.

I’m a dog person but had cats but with dogs growing up with my family. I haven’t had one as an adult and am glad my wife of more than 35 years is a dog person. Would I ever have another cat? Remind me not to eat while watching. Yeah, one cat is enough and never more, but I have to have a cat, because of all of the rodents around my house, which is out in the sagebrush and junipers. I'm talking major mice, gophers, packrats and voles. One thing that is bad is that he also kills cottontails and a bat now and then. The main problem was the packrat's like to chew on automobile wires, which isn't an expensive problem any more. Yeah, my neighbors have two dogs that have been locked up in a kennel for the past 4 years that never get out. They bark constantly from a kennel right beside a dirt road, which probably makes them depressed. Dogs are angels and shouldn't be treated like that.
Bummer to hear about the life of them dogs.... I'm 100% for property/ranch cats. My dad had one, Louie, that cat looked like it was on steroids and rarely came into the house

I had to put down my german Shepherd a year ago and had it done by a Veterinarian at home cuz was not going to put her through the terror of going into the Veterinarian office. My cat and dog were best friends. Will never own another dog because the grief of losing her is awful . My german Shepherd was also a companion dog for my dearly departed husband of 26 years who was a Former Marine Corp Warrent Officer L3. Perfect! Yes, you need to clean the cat box twice daily. Cleaning is essential. If people are too lazy to do that, then they should not own any cat. I love dogs, but am too busy to devote 100% of my attention to a dog. Cats take care of themselves and balance loyalty with self-reliance.
