    ***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
    Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
    We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

    I am in my 60s as a kid my job was hand milking two cows every morning. Yes we separated the Calves at night, But we also played relaxing music in the barn when we milked you’d be surprised a relaxed cow will give you more milk.

      From the consensus here, as well as my childhood on a dairy farm where we did play music for the cows, I'd say bovine respond to deep/low notes. Like the ones they make themselves! 💖

The curly hair on Tex is so beautiful, I bet the ladies love that, lol. I'm tickled you let Babe nurse for longer than what is commonly practiced now, I'm sure Babe & mom appreciate it. 💜

      I understand all this, but one question. How did Babe or Rose react through the night? I lived on a dairy farm and the cows and calves would cry all night when first separated. And this would go on for several days. I wish you would have recorded them on and off overnight.

    • @gilliegilbert3353
      @gilliegilbert3353 3 года назад

      @@ginamh8276 from the video they were only separated by a gate so they could see each other and even touch. It seemed they were perfect. I grew up on a dairy farm as well I know we took the calf away right away. So I know the bellowing all-night thing.. But they didn't seem to be the case where they could still be in close contact.

    When watering. Never dunk your water tanks into the supply. It infects the entire water supply with anything that might be on the surface. Minor issue but it is a "best Practice" around the farm.

    Milking Trick: I learned this from another homestead: they were experiencing the same thing and found that their cow would hold on to the milk for the calf by only dropping some of her milk. When they let the calf milk for a few minutes the cow dropped down the rest of the milk. They pulled the calf away and starting milking again and got gallon of milk then they let the calf have her go.

    Yes I know Mike Morgan says RUclips ought to be called YouShould, so sorry for this. 😊 Noticed Sarah laboriously holding the milk lines during milking. Get a length of 1/8” cord long enough to throw over the cows back to enable the cord to be tied underneath the milk lines to aid in keeping the milkers attached. We utilized this in our small dairy years ago. There was a small metal fixture attached to the cord, shaped with two slots cut in it that allowed the cord to be quickly attached, adjusted and detached. Hope this helps.

    Wonderful day...we are small scale homesteading...spent yesterday canning green beans from our garden and we are now doing turkeys...bourbon red, heritage bronze and Narragansetts. Just hatched 4 eggs yesterday and have two hens sitting...people are paying good money for turkeys, chickens, rabbits, goats...anything that can be used for food...so I love watching turkeys and our chickens...and hoping to get a little help on cost of feeding them by sale...we added brahma chickens to our flock...decided (for us), to raise this breed as it was mainly bred as a meat chicken. Instead of getting the cornish cross twice a year and putting 20 of them in the freezer...our plans are to raise and hatch out this breed and harvest as we want a couple days ahead...may plan to go back and do some CornishX but for right now, we are trying raising turkeys and a meat type of bird. Sadly, our rabbits had 12 kits and all died...first time for that...we got 15 last season and they were all put in our freezer...this time, I wanted to harvest some and sell some, but I think our heat was just too much...we were late breeding this year due to our crazy weather...will try again this fall...All your animals are adorable! That's one of the gifts of homesteading...love raising the animals! God Bless!

    Hi, You can ween your calf off of your milk cow as soon as it is eating solid foods and drinking from the water trough. It won't hurt it and it will help the calf to develop a good healthy Ruman (gut).

    Your subtle witness is a gift. Babe is a really nice heifer. Being cautious about wildlife in your fruit trees, curious to your choice of adding mulberry.

    It was the first time Babe doesn't realize what's going on. The true test is subsequent evenings.

    We used to bottle feed the calves since we were right there milking anyway. That way the calves were used to us touching them, leading them, and they were weaned from momma right off. We left the calf on momma once and it was very hard to wean her. After separation at 12 was old, for three months, she immediately went back to nursing mom when reintroduced. Im sure we did something wrong through the process though. LOL. I’m enjoying sharing your journey with you!

    Just a quick question, when did you get rid of the quail? It was always fun to watch them. We have quail and I always got helpful tips from your channel.
    Thank you for sharing your videos. God bless. Ashley
