    I got bear. The funny part is that nothing from the information of bears goes well with me. I usually go to sleep at 2-3 am and wake up 10-11 am. I can't go to sleep too early and I definitely cannot wake up easily before 9. And I don't drink coffee. And I am definitely introverted 🤣 Maybe I was a bear before and now, I'm something weird between dolphin and wolf, I guess.

      Keep in mind that your chronotypes change over time. It's certainly possible that you were a wolf as a child and have now become more of a bear!

    • @cheebadigga4092
      @cheebadigga4092 14 дней назад

      @@TheSleepDoctor he said "since a child". Same for me. My chronotype didn't change at all. The quiz also told me I'm a bear when I certainly am a wolf, or more like a cat in that regard. I sleep best when I sleep around 16 hours, like cats, regardless of that being healthy for humans or not. I am also able to sleep 24 hours if I want to, and I'm 31 years old now. Yes it's possible and I love it. It happens not nearly as much as it did when I was 16 or so, but it still happens. I think the quiz doesn't take nearly as many possibilities into considerations as it should. Not sure if it has anything to do with it but I think the quiz is very US-lifestyle biased, so as a German I can't relate at all with that. Might not mean anything though.
      Btw please don't take this to heart lol. It's just my opinion and nothing to worry about.

    I am a bear based off the questions from the quiz and from your book. But I’m not extroverted at all. What is weird with me is on workdays I feel most energetic and productive between 1p-6p. I hate mornings no matter what time in the morning I feel groggy and grumpy. I’d like to nap durning work but it’s not possible with my work schedule.
    Also, I have to work out between 5-7p because of my work schedule. I do notice my evening weekday workouts aren’t as good as my Saturday morning workouts though.

    While the sleep information is useful, I don’t see the correlation between one’s chronotype and personality traits. Extroversion and Friendliness? Because one wakes up at 8? What is the science behind it? Seems like information tied in to make the viewer “feel good” about their type, same reason for including celeb names as well. I’m a bear, the rhythm mentioned definitely fits me - especially when it says to not drink coffee after 2pm so accurate - however, the personality bit got me rolling my eyes. Makes no sense and was way off.

      I appreciate your skepticism. I also thought this was a bunch of BS, until I dug into the science. The science is real. Feel free to get my book, The Power of When and I explain it all. There are over 220 studies cited in my book. Im not the only one who looks at chronotypes. These are genetic, I can actually show you exactly where on the human genome you can see how this works.

    I was really surprised I was a Bear, totally thought I'd be a Lion or Dolphin. When I looked at the chart, though, that totally matches for work. I am a morning person who likes to get up early, but not be rushed. My ideal time to wake up is 5:45, not 7:00. The 10:00 PM bedtime works for me. The hardest change will be the coffee. I am drinking my first cup about 10 minutes after I wake up (love those timer coffee pots), but I am struggling with staying asleep after 2 AM so will adjust the caffeine and see how this helps . . . lots of good info to start from.

      Hi! Thanks for watching. It sounds like you’ve got the classic night owl tendencies! Chronotypes can sometimes feel a bit oversimplified, and many people find that they don’t fit neatly into one category. Factors like genetics, lifestyle, and personal habits can all play a significant role in your sleep patterns. If you're consistently staying up late and thriving on that schedule, you might just be one of those unique night owls who don’t align with the typical classifications.

  • @maxmoore3442
    @maxmoore3442 Год назад +1

    Thank you Michael Bruce,
    Yes I took your Chronotype quiz and I am a bear. But I have some concerns… first is that you mentioned that bears should be in bed by 10 PM and 10:30 PM sometimes that’s not the case for me because I usually go to bed around 11:30 PM or midnight due to overstimulating myself by watching a television program on Netflix while having a evening snack. So my question is what could I do to avoid it?
    My other concern is that you also mentioned bears should workout during the afternoon I do get in my workouts but I tend to procrastinate and I usually work out around noon-ish because not only I workout I also dedicate myself to my drum practicing. So what time would you recommend I put in my drum practicing?
    With those things out of the way I also wanna bring up what you mentioned for the productivity window I usually work fortwo restaurants from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM Monday Tuesday and Thursday. I also work in the bistro at a hotel Wednesday from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM Friday and Sunday from 8 AM till noon. Basically this is my work schedule, so what would you recommend On with the rest of the day because I gave you a baseline from the top paragraphs I’ve already had mentioned.
    Thanks again,
    Max Moore

      Hey Max,
      So that we are super clear, I am not your doctor, and I am not giving you medical advice. Here is what I would suggest to a patient if they came in to my clinic.
      Step one- Id get the book, the questions you are asking are answered in the book, but would require quite a bit of context, and this is not enough space to really do that.
      Step 2: Stop over stimulating yourself and eating at night- BOTH are causing you to have poor quality sleep and less sleep than you need. Just turn off the TV, close the fridge, and go to bed at 1030. My guess is that you will probably fall asleep.
      Step 3: Bears especially, will not usually stay motivated for exercise after about mid- day- so this tracks with what we see. Keep working out, whenever you are motivated ( except within 2-3 hours of lights out)
      You are on the right path, but you just need more info, Its all in the book. Thanks for supporting my work.
      Dr. B

      @TheSleepDoctor  14 дней назад

      Hi! Thanks for watching. You bring up a good point! The test might not capture all aspects of a bear chronotype, as it primarily focuses on waking times without emphasizing bedtime. Many bears are indeed early risers and may be awake for long hours, often about 16 to 18 a day, which can lead to varying sleep patterns and durations. It's important to remember that individual lifestyles, work schedules, and personal habits significantly influence how each chronotype expresses itself. Thank you for your question!

My schedule is packed with work from 8:30 to 11:30 three days a week then I work 6:30 to 11:30 Wednesday and eight to noon Friday and Sunday. Also my weekends like Saturday is free in the afternoon, but Sunday afternoon is free. in addition I have evening programs like Wellesley town band on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 then I have weight training and swim Tuesday nights from 7 to 9, as well with Plugged In Band Wednesday from 6 to 7:30. My other question is how would I manage my evenings prior to my part-time jobs? Otherwise I find it hard to have dinner right at 7:30 Sunday night like Monday night including Tuesday evening, but it only works Wednesday,Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

    To be honest the quiz is a bit too focused on society. Some questions I couldn't answer completely accurate because the options were limited to say the least. Like "What would be your ideal wake-up time if you didn’t have any obligations?" - the only real option for me was "after 9 am" which is way too broad. Personally I would say it's rather 4 PM for me. Just an example.

Your feedback about the limited options is valuable, as everyone's sleep habits are different. Some might find a wake-up time of 4 PM ideal, and that’s perfectly valid! Yall first of all this is a generalization and second it’s a characterization of what “should” be natural for you and therefore, ideal. It’s 4 categories for millions if not billions of people. So merely a *suggestion*. I dont sleep with sunrise and sunset BUT maybe taking other efforts to do so MAY improve my energy. I do find sleeping 3 hours and waking up really early or sleeping at sunset and then sleeping for 10-12 hours, I am more alert. So maybe I can find a balance where Im neither over nor undersleeping…just because you are not the whole characteristic of the bear right now doesn’t mean trying to fit your sleep to this wont make you more like one. Chill its like a horoscope

    Nah man, I'm not a bear.. I just had to strangely adapt to bear cycle and that affected my habits, I guess... The reason I like doing active things in the morning isn't because I'm an early riser, it's because it's the chilliest time of the day, and >often, I'm still awake< from over night at dawn. Sometimes, I can't sleep until it's like 12am earliest to 4 to 9am latest in the morning, then want to wake up by like... 2pm at the very latest... so I don't feel like I wasted the day.
    I am =not= a bear. 😅
    Well... it's more like... I dunno, insomnia. I start feeling sleepy about 10 pm, but can't fall asleep until later, and when I wake up, my sleep inirtia is for several hours... it kinda sucks.

    This whole system seems flawed at a glance. Not much nuance, soft but noticeable contradictions between websites, and slapping basically a big vague "Whatever insomniac" under Dolphin. I've known so many people over my life who live by a crazy schedule of something like staying up till 4am, and waking at 11. Where's their type? Wolf is marked as "the night owl", and yet expects them all to yield to bedtime by midnight or 1am. So much for a huge chunk of the dark period. Then there's a ton of overlap and contradictions between bear and lion depending on the sources. Why are they so close and loaded with redundancies? Some sources expect a grown adult to be "the bear" and go to bed with "with the sun", which can be don 6pm by place/season, and yet you want to then talk about the lion being the earlier one, and don't have any plan or reason for the many people going around watching movies at 3am, and deny the entire "third shift" form of job a place? Not to mention more obscure issues where my boss is doing college sports catering orders that need to be delivered by 4-6am period, so he's up working hours before that range, and covering into the morning shift before disappearing, yet we want to mark the early bird lion as like...waking 5-7am!? Okay, step back again and let's ask another for those who nap around a bit and dodge any single sleep 8 hour "standard", etc. We need more than 3 real answers and the lazy cop-out dolphin category.
    Look, I've been a bit of a freak myself, and this has no place for me. I want to be an early person, I've long had a habit of having my night and morning coffee where time allows. Ideally my morning range is between 7-9, while my go-to-sleep time is 12-2am. Easily an average of 1amish. I need a morning, or I feel betrayed, but by night I still have too much I want to be done while I'm still very snappy and quick in the morning before anything from the day has causes a sense of mental congestion. I can hit the bed at 2 and still pry awake fine at 7 sometimes, often beating my alarm by 20-40 minutes. I'm a light sleeper to sound and wake more dizzy if something like a truck outside caused it, but... while I have room for improvement, I almost never ever get or run on the "perfect magic 8 hour" formats when that is scientifically not something for everyone and shouldn't be the measure by this system "or else the automatic Dolphin of mystery". Still I've done really good for early morning tests back in school, and again usually I have to force myself to step away from doing tasks/distractions at night so I can get a morning again. If I have to work at 6:30am, that's usually cool by me outside the fact I'm pissed I don't have time to sit with coffee for a bit, but I'm happier for still leaving "early" from work than my 12-9pm shifts. Still, I'll sit up till around 11 at bare, hard-controlled, minimum, and more often slip out to 12:30 or beyond. ... and no, I'm no insomniac, once I'm down I'm usually gone in moments. But then a simple loud truck, or badly closed curtains with the crack of sunlight can drag me back up again. Somehow, I'm.... "The bear", the 50% that is stated to go to bed once its night... and yet I know of nobody going to bed at a winter's 7pm outside of their parents demanding it, while the heaps of people going for 3/5am-10/12am are apparently the missing 5th chronotype of Bigfoot, yet I sure see them a lot more than wolves and bears.
    This quiz and system is hockey nonsense with good intentions. I won't deny there's ideas here worth trying to follow if someone is troubled, but its definitely leaped the logic and trying to do so while sounding so cuddly and easy to follow.

Many people discover that their natural sleep rhythms don’t align perfectly with standard classifications. This is why it's crucial to explore what works best for you, rather than forcing yourself into a specific label. Ultimately, it’s all about finding a routine that supports your unique sleep needs!

    lol…. If you’re a bear you probably have these personality traits…. Oh wait, also chronotypes change! Dude, people’s base personality traits do not change. You won’t be an introvert then magically be an extrovert. When you throw in personality shit you make this sound like a horoscope thing and it loses all validity to me….

      Hi! I get what you mean! While personality traits are generally stable over time, chronotypes can shift due to various factors like age, lifestyle changes, and even environmental influences. This doesn’t mean personality traits like introversion or extroversion are in flux, but rather that our sleep patterns and preferences can adapt. It's a fascinating topic.
